Forlì is one of the cities in Assassin's Creed II. Little is known about Forlì other than that it is characterized by plazas and open areas. It is the capital of its district and as such it is a center of trade. The city is located in the region of Romagna.

Trivia
*Caterina Sforza who will be in the game was Countess of Forlì (from 1480 until 1500), and her legendary episode will be as well in the game: in 1488, her husband and Lord of Forlì (and Imola), Girolamo Riario was assassinated in a conspiracy led by the Orsis, a noble family of the city. She and her children were made prisoners. Since the fortress of Ravaldino, a citadel of strategic importance to the defense of the city, refused to surrender, Caterina offered to go to convince the castellan, Tommaso Feo. The Orsinis believed the good intentions of Caterina because she left her children as hostages, but once inside she let loose a barrage of threats and promises of vengeance against her former captors and when they threatened to kill her children still in captivity she exposed her genitals from the fortress walls saying: "Ho con me lo stampo per farne degli altri!" (I have the instrument to bear more!). This last part is without historical veracity but it is said to be featured in the game. But it is only mentioned by Shawn.

The Animus (Latin for "mind" or "soul") is a machine, developed by Abstergo Industries, to read a subject's genetic memory, and, from it, create a simulation of the ancestor's life that the subject can interact with, "playing" as the ancestor.

Use
A subject lies on top of the Animus, placing his head in the intended location. A circular glass screen opens around his head. This screen serves as a display for the Animus's menus.

The subject selects a memory to play, and the Animus's simulation begins. The glass screen is not used for the simulation- it appears that the simulation is actually projected into the subject's head. The subject appears to control the character in the simulation as someone would in a dream, with thought only. The game manual hints that the Animus is controlled by a video game controller, but that is probably just be a bit of foolery to explain why they're writing the manual.

Synchronization
Synchronization
As the subject interacts with the simulation, his actions must remain Synchronized with those of his the ancestor whose memories are being reenacted. Important events in the ancestor's life must be recreated by the subject in the simulation. Failure to do so, or otherwise straying from the "path", will result in a loss of Synchronization. Too much Synchronization loss, and the entire simulation must restart from an earlier point.

Synchronization is measured by a bar on the top left of the HUD.

Genetic memory
Genetic memory
Genetic memory is the accumulated memory of a person's ancestors, encoded in his DNA. While the theory is controversial in real life, it is evidently true in the Assassin's Creed world, as otherwise, the Animus would not work.

Physical characteristics
The animus is colored chrome, with blue lights in some places. On top of the Animus is a metallic bed, where the subject lies as his genetic memory is read. A computer under the bed runs a simulation of the subject's genetic memory. There is a glass screen that opens around the subject's head, to display the menus of the Animus.

The Animus releases a large amount of heat. At one point it apparently overheats, although this may have been a deliberate stall on Lucy's part. When it overheated, the blue lights began flashing orange instead. In assassins creed there is a downloadable content of the Animus 2.5 a very strong Animus that does not over heat.

In Assassin's Creed II
In the first gameplay trailer for Assassin's Creed II, it appears that the Animus has gone through major revisions. These appear to be the result of an upgrade to the Animus, or its software. In fact, it is an other Animus (2.0) than the Abstergo one which was kept in a modern Assassins' hideout.

When Ezio assassinates a target, the screen and HUD seem to 'melt' away to the death cutscene. The 'talk' scene is also different, as in the first game, the scene was an icy blue, but in the sequel, it appears to be a white color. The Animus's logo appears to have changed too. The first logo was actually the Abstergo Industries' logo. The new logo, as seen on the official website, is a Penrose triangle.

It also seems that the synchronization has been increased since Ezio has his own facial features (in spite of having the scar of Desmond) and an Italian accent unlike Altaïr in the first Animus who had the face of Desmond, and an American accent (though he sometimes spoke Arabic).

Trivia
*The word Animus is Latin for mind.

William of Montferrat is the fifth target ordered by Al Mualim for Altaïr to assassinate. He is found in the rich district of Acre.

Description
William serves King Richard as Regent Lord of Acre, and spends most of his time training and preparing his men for the "coming war". However, few of his soldiers have actually been sent to join Richard at Arsuf, leading people to wonder what "war" he's referring to. It is implied that he was appointed by Richard to put pressure on his son Conrad who has clashed with the King.

William always demands the best from his men, and is quick to point out flaws, while being reluctant to give praise. He is often shouting, and rarely sounds happy. He is also set in the belief that might makes right, and spends countless hours training his men.

The Assassins originally believed that William planned to murder Richard and turn Acre over to Conrad, but to Altair's shock, William denounced his son with surprisingly vehment hatred, sneering "My son is an arse, barely fit to lead his host let alone a kingdom." His true purpose was apparently to turn the city over to the Templars, and for this reason he had been taking food from the people, with the aim of insuring it would be rationed properly during "the lean times" (presumably he expected resistance to the Templar's plans), and by training and disciplining his men and people unmercifully, he hoped to instill in them the value of discipline and order, to prepare for the new world.

Death
William of Montferrat was assassinated within his personal quarters located in the Kings Citadel, shortly after a visit from King Richard of England, giving Altaïr the opportunity he needed to get close enough to kill him. The assassin managed to stealthily penetrate into the lord's citadel fortress, and quickly put an end to his life. After observing William's and Richard's heated discussion safely under the cloak of the noble crowd, Altaïr pierced the fortress in search of his assassination target. He finally came to a cornered keep, a small fortress within a fortress. Altaïr listened as William belittled his men with razor barbed insults intended on encouraging them for better performance and stronger sense of duty. Silently approaching and skillfully eliminating archers, Altaïr finally moved into position. Remaining highly in tune with the surrounding environment, Altaïr patiently watched and waited for William to perfectly position himself for his own death. As William continued his speech and slowly paced toward the scaffold, Altaïr quickly dropped onto it, focused on his target, and before anyone even began to take notice of the impending danger leaped towards William, his Hidden Blade fully extended. Even as William took notice of the descending assassin it was too late, for by the time he realized it he was already being forced onto his back, and his throat was punctured severely by the assassin's steel Hidden Blade. Williams public assassination is recorded as the fifth major public figure to be publicly assassinated by Altaïr, and his death is the second within Acre.

Final Words
Altaïr: Rest now. Your schemes are at an end.

William: What do you know of my work?

Altaïr: I know that you were going to murder Richard, and claim Acre for your son, Conrad.

William (laughing): For Conrad? My son is an arse, unfit to lead his host, let alone a kingdom! And Richard, he is no better, blinded as he is by faith in the insubstantial. Acre does not belong to either of them!

Altaïr: Then who?

William: The city belongs to its people.

Altaïr: How can you claim to speak for the citizens!? You stole their food, disciplined them without mercy, forced them into service under you!

William: Everything I did, I did to prepare them for the "New World". Stole their food? No, I took possession, so that when the lean times came, it might be rationed properly. (coughes chokingly). Look around: my district is without crime, save those commited by you and your ilk; and as for the conscription, they were not being trained to fight: they were being taught the merits of order and discipline. These things are hardly evil.

Altaïr: No matter how noble you believe your intentions, these actions are cruel and cannot continue!

William (laughing): We'll see how sweet they are, the fruits of your labours. You do not free the cities as you believe, but rather damn them! And in the end, you'll have only yourself to blame...you, who speak of good intentions.

Inspiration
He is based off the real life William V, Marquess of Montferrat, who died in 1191.
