Firearms are a class of long-ranged weapons that launch projectiles at high velocity, through the confined burning of propellants. They were used as early as the late Middle Ages.

History
High Middle Ages
Though he knew of firearms being used in ancient China, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad took little interest in them; realizing that the weapons were of no use to his Order in their current size.

As such, upon obtaining the Apple of Eden, he successfully used the knowledge it held to miniaturize the design, "embedding their fiery weapon into a form that can be worn on the wrist."

Along with the formulation of a combustible powder that could be made from common ingredients, Altaïr kept the schematics for the Hidden Gun a secret, available to only the Brotherhood's most trusted allies.

Sometime afterwards, he recorded all details of these in his personal journal.

Renaissance
In Italy during the Renaissance, another Assassin, Ezio Auditore, came into possession of Altaïr's Codex, and showed the pages to Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo deciphered the instructions, and was able to construct the Hidden Gun for Ezio's use.

Though firearms were uncommon until the early 16th century, after Cesare Borgia forcibly recruited Leonardo into his employ around 1499, the engineer was made to design a wheel-lock firearm for use by the Borgia armies.

Cesare's ally, the French Baron Octavian de Valois, received a personalized, golden wheel-lock firearm from Leonardo, and kept it with him at all times. During the Fall of Monteriggioni, Cesare used this pistol to kill Mario Auditore.

A variety of firearms began to circulate among common guards as well, with Arquebusiers wielding long rifles or arquebuses, and with several Horsemen and Papal Guards using shorter pistols.

In later years, upon Ezio's travels to Constantinople, he encountered Turkish soldiers using Ottoman flintlock rifles, as well as Janissaries who used short pistols. The Assassins of the local guild also made use of firearms to guard local dens, ranging from simple rifles to cannons.

Meanwhile, the Byzantines forces had an early version of a flamethrower, which they used to deliver Greek Fire. They also had a form of a machine gun, which was similar in construct to Leonardo da Vinci's prototype. Both of these were then later adapted by the Assassins, in order to aid them in defending their dens.

American Revolution
By the time of the American Revolutionary War, firearms had become standard equipment for armies. Soldiers of both sides used muskets, often accompanied by bayonets.

The American Assassin Connor Kenway was able to wield a musket as well as two flintlock pistols; however, he only fired each of them once in battle, and could only reload them when the fight had finished.
During the late 19th and early 20th century, in the Russian Revolution, the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov wielded a modern bolt-action Mosin–Nagant rifle alongside the usual weaponry of his time.
The library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was a hidden chamber beneath the fortress of Masyaf, rumored to have contained hundreds of books and the wisdom gained from the Apple of Eden by the legendary Assassin.

It was also said to be the hiding place of an extremely powerful weapon, and of a means of locating the fabled Grand Temple; which caused the Assassins and Templars to take interest in the library during the Renaissance.

The library was guarded by a stone door that was described as "harder than steel," and was engraved with Arabic script, an Assassin insignia, and five constellations as keyholes.

The door could only be opened by placing the five Masyaf Keys in their respective places, along the stars of the constellation Aquila (constellation), "the eagle" that bears "Altair" as its brightest star.
Creation
I see. This is not a library at all. It is a vault.

Sometime before 1257, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, had a library built under the gardens of Masyaf. When finally completed, the library was used to store all of the knowledge Altaïr had gained from studying the Apple.

During the Mongol siege of Masyaf in 1257, Altaïr realized the danger of the fortress being overrun, and wished to keep the contents of his library out of the wrong hands.

As such, he had his son Darim bring several books with him to Alexandria, while others were given to Niccolò and Maffeo Polo, along with the five library keys, for the two to hide in Constantinople. Finally, on fleeing the returning Mongol troops, the Assassins abandoned their fortress.

Only Altaïr himself remained, intending to leave the Apple locked safely within the library and "far from eager hands," until the time was right. After placing the Piece of Eden at the back of the library, he stopped for a moment to rest, and passed away peacefully in his chair.

Search
Sometime in 1509, Ezio Auditore discovered a letter that was written by his father Giovanni in 1458. In it, Giovanni spoke of Altaïr's library as a "sanctum full of invaluable wisdom," prompting Ezio to depart on a pilgrimage to Masyaf the following year, which would span many months.

However, by that time, a Byzantine Templar force led by Leandros had already taken over the fortress, after having discovered the journal of Niccolò Polo, which also made mention of the library.

It took a year for them to discover the door, but by March 1511, three months after the discovery, the workers had not even managed to make a dent on the library's entrance.

As the Templars in Constantinople frantically searched for the library's keys, Ezio arrived at Masyaf, only to be confronted and captured by Leandros' forces. After escaping his own execution, Ezio traveled to Constantinople, in a race to find the keys before the Templars and gain access to the library.

Over time, Ezio discovered that the Templars only wished to enter the library to discover the location of the Grand Temple, which they thought would allow them to achieve their ultimate goal of a New World Order.

Finally, in early 1512, after several months and the deaths of Templars and Assassins alike, Ezio was able to secure all the keys to the library and return to Masyaf to open the entrance.

The same year, Ezio and Sofia Sartor reached the library entrance with the five keys. Using his gift to see both the correct placement and orientation of each of the keys, Ezio opened the stone door and entered the library.

There, he found no books or wisdom, but only the skeleton of Altaïr, which had lain undisturbed for the past two hundred years. Though Ezio approached the Apple hidden in the library, he refused to touch it, saying that he had "seen enough for one life," the same words spoken by Altaïr centuries before.

As he abandoned his sword and Hidden Blades within the library, Ezio began to speak aloud to Desmond Miles, though he admitted that he did not know how the latter could hear him. He only hoped that Desmond would be able to answer the questions he had asked, and that he would "make all this suffering worth something in the end." After this, Ezio exited the library, leaving his life as an Assassin behind.

Later in the 16th century, the Apple was retrieved from the library, and eventually came into the possession of Queen Elizabeth I.

Trivia
*The Arabic script on the library door was written in the form of ancient Arabic, which read: إتق دم البرئ - لآ شيء مطلق بل الكل ممكن - إختبئ وسط الأزحام - إختبئ وسط الأزحام and نحن من إتمنك - لأ تخن من إتمنك. This translated to: "Revere the blood of the innocent - Nothing is absolute, everything is possible" - "Hide in the midst of the crowds - Hide in the midst of the crowds" and "We are the ones who have entrusted you - Do not betray our trust", which paraphrased the tenets and maxim of the Creed.

The Romani were semi-nomadic, stateless people, who were originally from the eastern reaches of Persia and India. Over many centuries, their population migrated west, eventually reaching as far as Eastern Europe and northern Africa.

However, the Romanies were a fiercely independent culture who refused to assimilate to their host nations. Although these difficult relations did cause them to endure hardship, the Romani were able to retain a rich and varied culture all of their own.

The Romanies were referred to in much of the English-speaking world as Gypsies, a corruption of the name "Little Egyptians," from the mistaken belief that they came from Egypt. While they generally considered this term offensive, they would call themselves Romani, coming from the word "Romanes" in their language, for "the people." Many ethnicities existed within the group, including the Roma that most likely occupied the Middle East.
In 1511, six month's worth of profit was stolen from the Romani by Byzantines. While in deep melancholy, the Romani received a visit from the Assassin Ezio Auditore. After arriving, Ezio offered to help the Romani as they attempted to gain infamy in the city, claiming it was better than being overlooked.

Ezio agreed, and left the headquarters to rendezvous with a group of Romani in the streets.

After he met up with the designated group, Ezio tailed each guard around the city, assassinating each guard as they carried the chest with poison, to maintain the myth that the chest was cursed. Weaving his way around the city with his group of Romani, the Assassin took care of each guard, though he made sure to remain stealthy. Eventually, the guards fled, confused and scared at the mysterious deaths. Following this, Ezio picked up the chest and reunited it with the leader of the Romani.

As Ezio walked the Romani leader back to their headquarters, she informed the Assassin of the origins of her people. Once they reached the headquarters, Ezio set the chest of profits down and the Romani thanked him, telling him the faction was available to him if he needed their help.

Internal conflict
Later that same year, a heated internal conflict began to form amongst the Romanies. A group of Romani wanted to exile a fellow Romani named Mirela Djuric, for they believed she was stealing from the poor. One of the members of this group then decided to confront Mirela at a small meeting.

On the Romani's way to the meeting, she and her friends were attacked by numerous Byzantine assassins. However, Ezio Auditore and one of his Assassin apprenticesfollowed the Romanies, and warded off the attackers when they attempted to strike.

Once she had reached the meeting, the Romani confronted Mirela about her deeds, yelling at her loudly. However, Mirela discreetly threatened the group of Romanies, before brushing past and stealthily poisoning the one who had confronted her.

Observing the killing, a group of soldiers then rushed to the scene and attempted to arrest the group of Romani women on the charges of murder. From there, Ezio and his apprentice then emerged and disarmed the soldiers, preventing them from harming the Romanies.

Some time after, Mirela was spotted buying datura, a deadly poison, by Ezio's apprentice. The recruit then met with Ezio and informed him of the situation, before Ezio left to flush out Mirela and assassinate her. Once he had located Mirela, she used a thunder bomb to obstruct the Assassin's sight and escape. Though hindered briefly at first, Ezio was able to hunt down and assassinate Mirela after a lengthy chase through the city, poisoning her whilst his apprentice held her arms still.

Characteristics
For 150 Akçe, Ezio could hire a group of four Romani, who could assist him similarly to courtesans. He would find these groups randomly throughout the streets of Constantinople, where they would be available. When not with him, they acted as street performers who were able to dance and play music, breathe fire, and provide other sources of entertainment.

However, the Romani could not perform any methods of freerunning, and were unarmed. Whenever combat arose, they would quickly flee from the area, which meant that they were unable to assist Ezio if he engaged in a fight, though they could distract guards. However, they would fight against civilians, should Ezio steal from them and get caught.

When distracting a guard, a Romani would often flirt with them and make gestures with her hands and clothing. This would also attract nearby guards' attention and cause them to abandon their posts, in order to approach the Romani. They were also able to remain with Ezio and help him blend in with the local crowd, making them useful whenever Ezio needed to access a restricted area.

Trivia
*The Romani replaced the Courtesans in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, as prostitutes were not accepted in Ottoman society.
Dual-wielding was a form of combat, wherein one used a pair of weapons in conjunction with one another. This was often to allow an easy shift between long and short-ranged attacks.

The Continental Army was the main military force of the newly-formed United States during the American Revolutionary War.

Major General George Washington was elected the Commander-in-Chief of the army by the Continental Congress in 1775, who created the army for the purpose of engaging in combat with the armed forces of the British Empire.

After six years of fighting, the British forces were eventually defeated in 1781, thanks to the much-needed assistance from the Kingdom of France. The British withdrew from the American colonies entirely after the Treaty of Paris ended the war in 1783.

Following this, the majority of the soldiers from the Continental Army went home to their families, and the few units remaining later formed the nucleus of the United States Army.
The Bayou was a marsh-filled area near New Orleans, which held little dry ground.
Swords and Maces were weapons used by military units, guards, and members of the Assassin Order to engage in open combat against armed opponents, and usually acted as primary weapons alongside a short blade or pistol. Swords could be either one or two-handed, though the latter was mostly classified as a heavy weapon.

Swords and maces both had a long reach, great power, and a quick attack rate, though not as much as long weapons, heavy weapons or short blades, respectively. As such, they could be seen as the most balanced weapons available.

Aside from attack, a sword or mace could also be used to block or counter an enemy, or break through their defense. They were also the only weapons that could be used from horseback.

History
High Middle Ages
In the High Middle Ages, guards used no other melee weapon but swords, and the guards of Masyaf regularly practiced swordplay in the courtyard, stressing how important it was to wield a blade. Maces were uncommon at the time, and the sword was a mainstay in any arsenal, even for Archers.

The sword became available to an Assassin upon reaching the second rank, with more powerful, better-quality swords being presented to him as he progressed. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad started off with a dull-gray sword that lacked a guard, and had a curved hilt. His second sword resembled the first, though was of a more silvery make, and possessed a distinct pommel.

His third sword was his personal sword. It possessed a hand guard that was shaped like an eagle's wings, and had an eagle head shape at the pommel.

Altaïr's very last sword was the Syrian sword. It had a curved blade, a characteristic of Arabic swords, and indicated a very high status, as the hilt and sheath were covered in gold. Al Mualim, the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, also used this sword.

Renaissance
Come the Renaissance, maces became equally as popular as the sword, and matched them in use and availability. The first sword Ezio Auditore da Firenze obtained came from his father, and was stored in a chest hidden in the Palazzo Auditore. However, he quickly lost it when he was disarmed trying to save his father and brothers from execution.

Ezio was later equipped with a similar sword, courtesy of his uncle, Mario Auditore, when he arrived at Monteriggioni.

Following this, he could buy a variety of swords or maces from blacksmiths. Any unequipped weapons he purchased were stored at the Villa Auditore armory.

Swords and maces continued to be a central part of combat in Rome. Ezio was more aggressive in his fights, and used a variety of new attacks against his enemies.

Additionally, Ezio learned to dual-wield his Hidden Gun with his primary weapon, in order to kill an enemy from a distance, or perform an instant double kill with both his sword and gun during a kill-streak.
Daniel Cross (born 1974) was a Templar sleeper agent, an ex-convict, and recovering drug and alcohol addict during the late 20th century. Following a heavy night of drinking, Daniel was spirited away by Hannah Mueller, a member of the Assassin Order, and introduced to a new way of life.

Curious about his constant visions of a past life, Daniel made it his mission to confront the current Mentor of the Order, and find some meaning to his life.

For two years, Daniel searched the globe, visiting every major Assassin camp in his quest to meet the Mentor, before he was finally granted an audience. It was during this meeting that a long-dormant trigger, implanted in his mind during his childhood, activated.

Daniel killed the Mentor, and fled the Assassins, returning to the only people he knew would accept him, Abstergo Industries. There, he joined the Templar ranks, becoming a Master Templar and a member of the Inner Sanctum by 2012.

Biography
Early years
Я хочу домой. (I want to go home).
His birth name unknown, "Daniel Cross" was, as a young child, kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and subjected to at least one bout of surgery.

Dubbing him Animus Subject 4, Abstergo explored Daniel's genetic memories, and caused him to experience the Bleeding effect later in his life. Using a replicated Piece of Eden, Warren Vidic inserted a hidden impulse that would drive him to kill the Mentor were he ever presented with the opportunity.

After this, the young Daniel was thrown out onto the street. He wandered the countryside alone, until he was happened upon by a couple driving by. When they asked his name, he merely said that he wanted to go home, but in Russian, the language of the ancestor whose memories he had relived.

Daniel grew up to become a petty criminal, though he suffered constantly from vivid hallucinations, and often mistook himself to be his great grandfather, the Assassin Nikolai Orelov.

As a result of not being able to comprehend the hallucinations, Daniel turned to drugs and alcohol. Eventually, his drug addiction led to the death of his girlfriend, Kelly. Daniel was convicted, and upon being released, became court-ordered to take medication to suppress his hallucinations.

At one point in 1998, after it became apparent that Daniel was not taking his prescription drugs, his court-ordered psychiatrist reminded him that he was required to do so by law. Daniel simply threw away the prescription he had been given, and chose instead to visit a local bar.

There, he drank heavily, and tried unsuccessfully to proposition several women; before vomiting into a toilet. He began to have another hallucination, this time about Nikolai's assassination attempt on Tsar Alexander III, before he stumbled out the back door of the bar.

Outside, Daniel was stopped by a man, who asked if he was feeling okay. As Daniel was still suffering from his hallucinations, he accused the man of being a Templar, and very nearly stabbed him with a knife. Before he was able to do so however, Daniel was stopped by Hannah Mueller, who - assuming he was a fellow Assassin - reprimanded him and pushed him into a car to take him back to her camp.

Introduction to the Order
The next day, Daniel awoke in a strange location, and learned that Hannah had taken him to an Assassin camp near Philadelphia. She remarked that they had been unable to find his cabin, and that nobody from the camp recognized him.

Shortly afterward, they met with Paul Bellamy, the director of the camp. Paul brought up the fact that there was no record of Daniel anywhere in the Order's personnel records. Daniel continued to protest that he knew nothing of the Assassins or the Templars, and was aghast when shown that a tattoo he had gotten was actually the symbol of the Assassin Order.

At that moment, Daniel had another vision, and said aloud the words Nikolai had spoken in one of his memories. When questioned on this by Paul, and on what "Tunguska" meant, Daniel got up to leave, but was intercepted by two other Assassins. The three broke into a fight, with Daniel quickly disabling his attackers. Paul was forced to put his Hidden Blade to Daniel's neck to prevent him from killing either, and Daniel was returned to one of the cabins.

That night, in a fit of anger, Daniel overturned the furniture in his room, which drew the attention of Hannah. Fearing his uncontrollable hallucinations, Daniel told her that he had left his medication in his flat, and that he needed to get it back.

Although Hannah at first refused to help him, she pitied him, and thus handed him a white hooded-jacket, so that he could blend in as they left. The two arrived at the apartment, but Daniel realized that he had no medication left, as he had thrown the last of it away. Daniel quickly sunk into a state of despair, while Hannah suggested that it might be for the best for Daniel to release whatever was locked up in his mind.

Finding his purpose
After a brief discussion about her role in the Order and the rigging of the upcoming election, Hannah asked if there was anything about Daniel's hallucinations that he remembered. Rising to his feet, Daniel walked up to the window and drew the figure of the Staff into the condensation; though he was unsure what it meant.

At that moment, Paul Bellamy burst into the room. Paul approached them, and said that he had just gotten off the phone with Bill Miles, whose records had mentioned a small team of Assassins who had been sent to Tunguska in 1908, though only one survived the mission. The survivor, Daniel's great-grandfather, had eventually journeyed to America.

After hearing the name "Nikolai Orelov", Daniel started to hallucinate about Nikolai's mission to retrieve the Staff from Tunguska. Paul urged Daniel to let them know what was going through his head, only to receive a right-hook from Daniel.

Daniel fled the apartment and made his way onto the rooftops, all the while continuing to see the events of 1908 transpire in his mind. He was pursued by both Paul and Hannah, who implored him to come down with them. As his vision reached its climax, Daniel's mind was flooded with a wide array of images; the Apple, Nikola Tesla, Eden, and his own birth. He then collapsed to the floor, but was hurriedly cradled by Hannah. Daniel assured her that he was all right, saying that he had finally found his purpose, that he had to find the Mentor.

Meeting with the Mentor
Over the next two years Daniel searched the globe for clues to the Mentor's whereabouts, visiting several Assassin camps in the process. At each location, he appealed to his fellow Assassins for their support and guidance. On November 5, 2000, Daniel finally got his wish.

While refreshing himself in his room, Daniel was accosted by at least two masked individuals, who, after a brief struggle, managed to inject a sedative into Daniel's neck. The following day, he awoke to find himself in the Mentor's Dubai facility.

Although unsure at first where he was, Daniel quickly worked out who it was he was speaking with. Daniel learned that his progress had been watched carefully by the Mentor, who knew about Daniel's visions, and that he was seen to be a unique asset to the Order.

The Mentor then explained how the title of "Mentor", as well as the sum total of the Mentors' knowledge, was passed on from the predecessor. He further went on to explain how the Order itself had changed its way of operating, and no longer simply killed those who became too powerful or greedy.

The Mentor then passed on his own Hidden Blade to Daniel, commenting on how the weapons were mostly ceremonial in the modern era, but still in working condition. As soon as the blade was given to him, Daniel felt as if he was made to use it. Putting it upon his forearm, Daniel suddenly recalled the impulse that had been embedded into his subconscious by Warren Vidic during his time at Abstergo.

Daniel acted upon this impulse and murdered the Mentor. He immediately regretted his actions, unsure of why exactly he had done such a thing. Upon hearing voices from outside the room, Daniel leapt through the glass windows, out of the tower, and into the sea below. He then started making his way to the only place he felt would welcome him, Abstergo.

Return to Abstergo
On November 21, Daniel eventually made his way back to the Abstergo research facility in Philadelphia. Retrieving the necessary information from him, Abstergo began mobilizing its strike forces in preparation for the Great Purge of the Assassin Order.

As soon as he arrived at the facility, Daniel demanded that he be returned to the Animus; though it was only after an attack on an unfortunate secretary that Warren Vidic became convinced of his urgency. Daniel was placed into the Animus to freely explore the memories of his ancestor, Nikolai Orelov, which had a calming effect on Daniel himself.

His withdrawal did not last however, as by 2012, Daniel had grown through the Templar ranks, becoming both a Master Templar, and member of the Inner Sanctum. He took up a position at the Operations Division of Abstergo, and was regarded by his fellow Templars as "a true hero."

Personality and characteristics
{{Quote|I hear voices, but I don't understand what they're saying. It's all in European or something.

Due to his hallucinations, none of which he could understand, Daniel was often confused. This confusion led him to be rude and anti-social, sometimes even going so far to have him resort to violence.

Upon learning of the Mentor, Daniel became incredibly determined to meet him, travelling the world and refusing to listen to others' insistence that his goal was impossible. After the murder of the Mentor, Daniel was shocked at his own actions.

Knowing that he could not return to the Assassins, he ran in desperation to Abstergo. However, Daniel eventually grew to fit into his new home, as well as into the Templar Order.

Trivia
*"Daniel" means "Judgment of God" or "God's Judgment" in Hebrew.
*Daniel was given the surname "Cross", in reference to the red cross symbol of the Templars.
*Daniel is one of eight known Assassins to be converted to the Templar cause, with the others being Harash, Haras, Masun, Jamal, Rashid ad-Din Sinan, Vali cel Tradat, and Lucy Stillman. However, Daniel was the only one to have held an allegiance to the Templars before ever joining the Assassins, albeit unknowingly.
The initiation into the Assassin Order was a ceremonial tradition upheld over many years of its existence. It was a rite of passage symbolizing when an Assassin apprentice became a full member of the Order, and vowed to commit their life to safeguarding the freedom of humanity.

History
High Middle Ages
Although the full details of the initiation into the Order up to the 12th century are unclear, the ceremony included the amputation of the ring finger, as a sign of commitment to the Creed. Afterwards, the Hidden Blade was installed, allowing the Assassin to participate in any assassination missions bestowed upon them.
As noted in the Codex of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, some time after becoming the Order's Mentor, Altaïr used an Apple of Eden to modify the design of the Hidden Blade, so that the amputation of the ring finger would not be necessary. This change was made so that an Assassin could not be so easily identified by their enemies.

Renaissance
During the Renaissance, the initiation was performed by the Mentor of the Order, alongside several other Assassins. The ceremony came in three parts: the speaking of the Creed, the branding of the initiate's left ring finger, and a Leap of Faith.

First, the participants stood around a lit brazier, with one Assassin reciting the Creed, which was answered in turn by the initiate. The final words, the maxim of the Creed, were spoken by all present.

Next, the initiate's left ring finger was branded, using tongs that had been heated in the aforementioned brazier. This was a modification of the removal of the finger that Mario Auditore once commented on, saying that "In this modern age, we are not so literal as our ancestors, but our seal is no less permanent."

Finally, the initiate took a leap of faith to signify their trust in the Order and their fellow Assassins - sometimes preceded by the Assassins present also taking a leap of faith - after which, the initiate was considered a full-fledged member of the Order.

Modern times
In modern times, the initiation had become much less formal and relevant. In 2000, the Mentor initiated Daniel Cross into the Order by rewarding him with an old Hidden Blade, and verbally welcoming him into the Order.

However, certain Assassins still performed portions of the ritual, though the branding of the finger was uncommon. In the later 21st century, Clay Kaczmarek was initiated in the traditional way by William Miles, walking among his soon-to-be Brothers before taking a leap of faith.

Trivia
*Though Ezio Auditore da Firenze's burn mark remains on his skin for the rest of Assassin's Creed II, it is not visible on his finger in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
Grand Masters of the Knights Templar
the highest rank of the Templar Order

The title of Grand Master was the highest rank attainable within the Templar Order and granted the bearer full control over its members and their operations.

Having previously born a more public face, more Grand Masters of the Templar Order were better known than their Assassin counterparts. As the Templars slipped into the shadows, the identities of the leaders eventually fell from the public consciousness.

While it is commonly assumed that all Templar leaders were drawn from the stock of Western nobility, due to the prominence of the Knights Templar front organization during the Middle Ages, the truth is that as the Order developed, diversified and relocated, many different people, of various racial backgrounds and cultural heritages, have assumed the mantle of Grand Master throughout the Templars' longevity.

History
Middle Ages
After two years without a Grand Master, Robert de Sable entered the order of the Knights Templar and reigned as their Grand Master during 1191. During his reign, he sought the Pieces of Eden, particularly the Apple of Eden. After having lost the apple, he launched an attack to Masyaf, the stronghold of the Assassins. During the Battle of Arsuf, he was killed by his rival, Altaïr.

After the death of Robert, Armand Bouchart took the title of Grand Master. He and the Templars retreated to Cyprus after Robert's death. However, Altaïr pursued him and in the Templar Archive, they fought each other. Altaïr won the fight, and the Templars lost another leader.

During the early 14th century, the French King Philip le Bel was unknowingly influenced by the Assassins, and conspired against the Templars. The Templars were branded heretics and hundreds of them were arrested, and the last official Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, understood that the Order would not survive as a public organization. He allowed himself to be burned at the stake, saving the lives of his brethren and making his enemies believe that the Templars were finished, though in reality the Order continued to exist - underground. Before his death, Molay sent nine of his most trusted men out into the world to continue his work.

Renaissance
By 1476, the Templars in Europe were eventually led by Rodrigo Borgia, a cardinal under Pope Sixtus IV. Operating from Rome, Rodrigo's primary objective was to unite Italy under the Templar banner; however, the Italian Templars strayed far from the main Templar ideology, using the Order as a way to achieve and sustain power for themselves. Despite facing complications from the Assassins, mainly Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Rodrigo managed to bribe the other cardinals, and was named Pope in 1492, taking on the name Alexander VI.

Rodrigo secured the power of the Church for the Templars, and from the Vatican he oversaw the progress of the other Templars in Europe, including England and Spain. however, by 1500, Rodrigo's resolve had weakened, and control over the order fell to his son Cesare Borgia, who acted as the de facto Grand Master.

After he killed his own father in August 1503, Cesare became the official Grand Master of the Order, though without his father's power in the Church, Cesare could not maintain the same influence in Europe that his father had. Cesare was imprisoned, and upon escaping, fled to his brother-in-law John III of Navarre in Navarre, Spain. He was ultimately killed during the Siege of Viana in 1507 by Ezio Auditore, destabilizing the Templars in Europe and causing them to temporarily withdraw.

Modern times
By the 20th century, the "Founders" created Abstergo Industries in 1937, which from that point on served as the front for the Templar Order. Though its highest-ranking employees all held some form of leadership in the Templar Order, there was still a Grand Master serving as the head of the company.
Short blades were short, curved bladed weapons that traded power and reach for a faster swing rate.

History
12th century
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's short blade was returned to him after he had reached the third rank. Like the sword, his skill with the short blade increased as he climbed up the ranks.

The first short blade he obtained had a wooden handle, though he received an all metal variation at a later rank. In both instances, he carried the short blade in a sheath strapped across his back, with the handle facing down.

In battle, he wielded the short blade with an Icepick grip, and often used it in conjunction with throwing knives.

Renaissance
In a similar fashion to Altaïr, Ezio Auditore was equipped with both a medium weapon and a short blade, though they were sheathed together at his side. He could purchase various types of short blades from blacksmiths, each with unique speed, damage and deflection properties.

In battle, he would wield the short blade much as Altaïr did, utilizing the same icepick grip, though he did not learn to use it alongside throwing knives until he became a Master Assassin.

Several of his allies, such as thieves and courtesans, also used short blades in battle. Certain guards and assassination targets, such as agiles and Rodrigo Borgia, made use of short blades as well. However, none of these held their weapons in an icepick grip.

Combat
Short blades could strike more quickly than medium weapons, which made them ideal for dispatching large numbers of low-ranked enemies. However, as an enemy's rank increased, the short blade's effectiveness diminished, due to the higher quality armor that they used.

For Altaïr, the special, close-ranged attack of most short blades could only be performed from behind, and took the form of slitting an enemy's throat, or stabbing them in the shoulder or the back, which would always result in an instant kill.

When used with the short blade, Altaïr could throw a single throwing knife mid-combat. Similarly, Ezio could dual-wield the short blade with throwing knives, and could throw multiple throwing knives at once.
Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed, Altaïr is the only person to use a short blade other than Malik & his brother until Malik loses his arm and when his brother dies. All other NPCs use long blades.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, once all throwing knives have been used up, the special attack of the short blade is switched to that of the fists, in which Ezio throws sand to momentarily blind and incapacitate his target.
*In the blacksmith stores in Brotherhood, the Notched Cinquedea has the store image of the Channeled Cinquedea, and vice versa.
*Unlike in Assassin's Creed II, in Brotherhood, the Channeled Cinquedea is a weapon that cannot be purchased, and can only be taken from a guard.
*Only very few individuals throughout the series hold the short blade with an icepick grip. These include Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Tamir, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Francesco de' Pazzi, Bernardo Baroncelli, and Claudia Auditore da Firenze.
*An unusable Notched Cinquedea can be seen stuck in the table in Ezio's room at the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni.
*In every Assassin's Creed game to feature the short blade as a usable weapon, there is a kill animation that Altaïr and Ezio possesses where the blade is not used at all. It involves breaking an enemy's leg with a kick, and then hooking their free arm around the enemy's head and snapping their neck.
