Brutes are enemies first featured in Assassin's Creed II. They are essentially human tanks, wearing heavy, durable armor and carrying large, heavy weapons. They are the strongest guards in terms of combat difficulty, however, they move very slowly due to the weight of their equipment and can thus be easily avoided.

They return in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood with a reworked appearance, though they are now comparable in terms of difficulty to the Papal guards.

Combat
Brutes are tricky enemies to defeat due to the nature of their attacks, though they can still be dispatched with some tactics and skills.

Normal attacks
Brute normal attacks can be blocked with any weapon, however they cannot be countered with a short blade or any sheath-able weapon. A counter attack may only be performed with another heavy weapon such as those the Brutes themselves carry, a long weapon (carried by Seekers), or by the hidden blade. The successful timing window for the last, however, is notoriously short, as it is only a fraction of a second.

Brutes can also be countered with Fists, which will disarm the Brute, and leave them open to a lethal, follow-up attack. The timing for the disarm is short, albeit slightly longer than that of the hidden blade counter.

Other than disarming or countering, a less risky (though more time consuming) tactic is to dodge the Brute's attacks and follow up with a combo of your own. When performed correctly, the combo may end with an execution. The maximum number of hits in a Brute combo is three.

Additionally, like all other enemies, a Brute is most easily dispatched by being assassinated either from above, or while undetected; with either the hidden blades, or a ranged weapon, such as the hidden gun or crossbow.

Special attacks
Neither of the Brute's special attacks can be blocked or countered, and can only be evaded by striking preemptively, or by dodging. There are two variants of a Brute's special attacks.

Smash
The Brute takes a strong downward swing with his weapon, knocking Ezio on his back and doing about as much damage as a normal attack. The Smash special attack takes less time for a Brute to prepare (approximately one second) than a Disarm Smash special attack.

A Brute is about to perform a smash attack if he raises his weapon high above his head.

Disarm Smash
More forceful than Ezio's equivalent disarm ability, the Brute performs a Disarm Smash with a hard right-to-left swing with his weapon, breaking Ezio's guard. If Ezio is using a short blade, mace or sword, this move knocks it out of his hand. The attack does no damage, but as mentioned, it opens Ezio to attacks from other foes in the fight.

A Disarm Smash special attack can be predicted when a Brute holds his weapon out behind him.

Intelligence, Agility, and Methods of Escape
Brutes are not highly intelligent and can be escaped once you've gotten out of sight by blending or hiding. They are also neither agile nor quick, and cannot free-run or climb. Thus, taking to the rooftops is an easy method of escape.

Ranking and Morale
Certain Brutes appear to have a black-brown finish or trim on their armor plating, marking them as higher-ranked Brutes that are more resistant to Ezio's attacks, and have a higher morale than others.

Brutes, like certain other guards, have a very high morale (the highest morale of any guard in Assassin's Creed II). This means that, unlike their allies, they will almost never run away, unless you disarm them when they are alone. Killing a Brute causes the other guards accompanying him (particularly those with lower ranks) to flee.

Special Brutes
*Dante Moro carries a Bearded Axe with an enlarged head, and fights like a Brute, only with far more health and immunity from being disarmed (unless you use the Heavy Weapon Disarm).
*Bartolomeo d'Alviano carries what appears to be a Bastard Sword (although the design and coloring of the handle differ from those carried by Brute guards), which he fondly calls "Bianca." He behaves like a Brute in combat, only with far more health.
*Fabio Orsini wears a typical Papal guard armour in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood like a Brute; however, he's not seen in combat during gameplay.
*Francesco Salviati carried an Axe with him when in his villa and fights like a Brute.
*The Mercenaries also fight like Brutes and carry similar weapons.
*The Templar Spy from Assassin's Creed II: Discovery uses the model of a Brute.
*Some Papal Guards, when equipped with a heavy weapon, will fight like Brutes.
*Auguste Oberlin (the Blacksmith) fights like a Brute in the singleplayer mode of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Trivia
*Ezio has special taunts that are specific to Brutes. If a Brute is targeted and taunted, Ezio use a variety of taunts which insult their weight like: <br />

"Can you even hear me in there metal man!?",<br />"Well you're certainly well fed!"<br />
"Diarrhea gotten stuck? Try leeches."

"That looks heavy!"<br />"Fatti sotto, porco! (Come on, pig!)"<br />"Ehi, grassone! (Hey, fatty!)"
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Brutes are rarer and harder to disarm than in Assassin's Creed II.
*In the Cristina missions in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the brutes have French flags pinned to their armor.
*In the mission Infrequent Flier, during the cutscene where Ezio abandons a burning Flying Machine, you can see a Brute and a Seeker on the roof of the Palazzo Ducale. Strangely, these are the only two guards that can't Free-Run or climb.
*When using the throwing knife special attack, Brutes can be killed with one knife, despite their armour.
*During the time between preparing and launching his special attack, the brute can have his guard broken by simply attacking him, attacking once more will instantly kill the brute.
We are the Auditore da Firenze. We are Assassins.

The House of Auditore was a noble family of Florence. Its prominent period was very short (approximately 100 to 200 years).

History
During the late 13th century, the family that would become known as the Auditores' lived in on the outskirts of Venice. Sometime before 1296, Domenico Auditore was inducted into the Assassin Order, under the tutelage of Dante Alighieri. After Dante's death, Domenico was tasked to hide an important&nbsp;text in Spain, but was ambushed at sea by Templar pirates. With only his son remaining, he used the bank account given by Marco Polo to impersonate a nobleman in Florence, taking vocal lessons and studying architecture and classics, adopting the Auditore name. He then constructed a villa in the town of Monteriggioni, hunted the Templars and trained his son to fight them and collect the Codex pages. Before his death, he left the origins of the family engraved on stone plates in the family crypt hidden under Monteriggioni.

Over the years, the family gained in prominence even becoming a close ally of the Medici dynasty, the rulers of Florence. However in 1476, approximately 170 years after its creation, the Auditore family collapsed, victims of a conspiracy led by Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Templar Order, Uberto Alberti, a close friend of Giovanni Auditore before he betrayed the Auditore family to the Templars and the Pazzi family, enemies of the Auditore and secretly Templars. They were considered as traitors of the Republic and excluded from the nobility. Most of the male members of the family in Florence were executed, leaving only Claudia, Maria and Ezio. After the execution, they took refuge in Monteriggioni under the protection of their uncle and ruler of Monteriggioni, Mario Auditore, a condottiero with an army of mercenaries at his disposal to fight against the Templars in the region. He also is the brother of Giovanni, patriarch of the family in Florence who was executed along with two of his sons. Giovanni's only remaining son, Ezio, took on his work and sought vengeance against those responsible for the death of his father and brothers. He contributed in restoring the villa and the city of Monteriggioni as well by adopting the rule of Monteriggioni.

It is unknown how many persons wore the name of Auditore after the events of Assassin's Creed II, but most of the information about the Auditore family has been erased from History after the conspiracy and the name was most likely lost over the centuries. The lineage however kept extending with two known descendants of Ezio Auditore in the 21st century; Desmond Miles and "Subject 16".

*After exploring the Auditore Family Crypt, it is discovered that the Auditore are not truly nobles, but only pose as nobles to cover the fact that they are Assassins.
*The religions of the Auditore are Roman Catholic and Atheist, this can be assumed because Mario said that he was "never much of a believer" when mentioning the villa chapel to Ezio, and Maria can be seen praying and making the sign of the cross when doing so.
*As soon as Ezio is born, his father tells him that he is an Auditore, and he is a fighter, hinting the family's history of being Assassins.
*"Auditore" is an Italian word meaning "auditor". An auditor is a person who maintains financial accounts of a business, which is likely a reference to the family's work in banking.
*If the Palazzo Auditore is visited during the Bonfire of the Vanities, Ezio can see his family face to face as a loving memory.

The Naval Cannon is one of the four war machines that feature in their own exotic side missions in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. A device designed by Leonardo da Vinci, it is similar to a regular cannon, but projects fire balls at an arched angle in order to cause wide-ranged damage. To fire the cannon, one must pull a lever near the cannon. It is meant to be powered by two people, one to steer the gondola, the other to actually fire the cannon.

The cannon was placed on a small boat (which appeared to be a widened gondola with stabilizers) so that it could be piloted around a harbor in Napoli, and was used by Ezio Auditore to destroy four Templar battleships. After he destroys the battleships, Ezio aims the cannon towards the boat itself and dives into the water before it is destroyed.

It is only used once throughout the single player story in the optional mission Loose Cannon, which can be replayed at any time once completed.

Trivia
*Successfully using and destroying the machine gains the player the "Splash!" achievement.

*A miniature replica of the Naval Cannon can be found at the Armory in Ezio's Hideout after attempting the memory.
*AC:B Players from the Philippines said that it is not a naval cannon in terms of its design and fire action; however, they said that when it is fired, it's like and MLRS, and they also said that it is the "first MLRS" ever they saw during the gameplay. MLRS stands for "Multiple Launch Rocket System".
