'''Stede Bonnet''' (c. 1688 – 1718) was an early 18th century [[Barbados|Barbadian]] [[Piracy|pirate]] of [[England|English]] descent who sailed the Eastern Seaboard of the [[United States|Thirteen Colonies]] with his crew. Despite his infamy, he was often nicknamed "The Gentleman Pirate", due in part to the fact that he was a moderately wealthy landowner prior to turning to piracy, owning a profitable [[Sugar plantation|sugar plantation]] in Barbados.

Despite his contrasting upbringing, Stede became a likeable associate of several well-known pirates based in the [[Caribbean]], including [[Edward Kenway]], [[Edward Thatch]], [[Benjamin Hornigold]], and [[Mary Read]].

==Biography==
===Early life===
Stede Bonnet was born around 1688 in [[Bridgetown]], Barbados to a successful and influential plantation owner. When Stede was seven, his parents died, leaving him orphaned and depressed.

As a result of the death of his parents, Stede inherited 400 acres of land from his father. By the time he was in his late teens, Stede had already returned his sugar plantation to a profitable state. Marrying young, Stede set about starting a family as soon as possible, but never found his domestic life comfortable or satisfying. Before 1715, Stede's firstborn son died in infancy, further complicating his unease. As a means of coping with his grief and restlessness, he dreamed of sailing around the world, and living free of obligations.

===Time in Havana===
{{Quote|It's mad to think Spain and England were at war two years ago, isn't it? Here I am, bartering with Spaniards like they were my cousins.|Stede upon arriving in Havana.|Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag}}
In 1715, Stede's [[schooner]], the ''[[Revenge]]'', was waylaid by a [[Royal Navy]] warship off the coast of [[Cape Bonavista]], [[Cuba]]. The [[United States|British]] suspected Stede of being involved in a nearby battle between a pirate [[Jacobite|warship]] and a passing [[HMS Intrigue|vessel]].

Despite denying this profusely, the British refused to accept his turn of events, intending to commandeer his vessel and marooning him. He was saved by the timely intervention of Edward Kenway, a pirate who had been involved in the engagement, and shortly beforehand assumed the identity of [[Duncan Walpole]], an [[Assassins|Assassin]] whom Edward had been forced to kill. Having saved Stede's life, the pirate offered to pilot ''Revenge'' to [[Havana]], where both of them had business. On arriving in Havana, Stede and Edward headed into the city, eventually ending up in a [[Taverns|tavern]].

There, Edward was recognized by a [[Privateers|privateer]], who knew of Kenway being a pirate, and of his ties to those in [[Nassau]]. The two engaged in a fight after Edward's attempt to silence him, drawing the attention of some nearby [[Spain|Spanish]] [[guards]]. Stede was mistaken for Kenway's accomplice and severely beaten by the guards, having his sugar confiscated in the process.

Once Kenway had returned from avoiding the soldiers, he found a battered Bonnet by the docks, who told the former that the soldiers had confiscated Edward's possessions, as well as the sugar. Edward then agreed to retrieve Bonnet's cargo at the same time as his own effects, but could not fulfill on his promise. Fortunately however, Stede was still able to make a profit with his remaining inventory, and Kenway then confessed his real first name to Bonnet.

Later on, Bonnet spotted Kenway with the [[Templars]] and excitedly called him by his real name, nearly blowing his cover, to which Kenway was quickly able to talk his way out of trouble. Kenway later met with Bonnet and complained about the small pay he received from the governor [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]] for the items he brought. Bonnet, on the other hand, was really trying to inform Kenway of his great sales from the day.

===Introduction to piracy===
Around his twenty-ninth birthday, Bonnet grew restless with "the tedium of domesticity", which may have been exacerbated by the death of his son. This prompted him to take up a life of piracy, hiring a crew of seventy men. To maintain a part of his life of comfort, he installed a full library in the captain's quarters of his ship, and dressed in fine pajamas, smoking jackets, and frocks. Near the end of 1717, Stede bid his wife and children farewell, sailing north from Barbados, never to see them again.

Sailing under the moniker "Captain Edwards", Stede was eager to take his first prize. His crew foolishly chose a Spanish Man O' War as their first target, and nearly half of his crew was killed or injured during the battle. Bonnet survived, and set sail for Nassau, meeting and befriending fellow pirate, [[Edward Thatch]]. Thatch convinced Bonnet to hand over the ''Revenge'', leaving Bonnet happily confined to his cabin.

[[File:Diving For Medicines 2.png|thumb|250px|left|Stede reuniting with Edward]]
Two months later, Thatch captured a massive French slave ship called ''La Concorde'', renaming it the ''[[Queen Anne's Revenge]]''. Thatch continued to mentor Stede for a time on board the ''Queen Anne's Revenge'', where Bonnet reunited with his old friend Edward Kenway, while searching for medicines for Nassau in the old ship wrecks. There, he became an unfortunate victim of Thatch's fear tactics, which frightened him speechless.

Later on, Thatch and his crew engaged a British [[Man O' War]], and were eventually assisted by Kenway. After the battle, Thatch allowed Bonnet to leave his service, returning him the ''Revenge''. Meeting Kenway for the final time, Bonnet joyfully bade his friend farewell, thanking him for their friendship, which he claimed was "more precious than any treasure".

Feeling that he had received adequate tutelage under Thatch, Bonnet had hoped to return to the Caribbean and receive a letter of marque from the Danish governor of {{Wiki|Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands|St. Thomas}} to go privateering against Spanish ships. However, hurricane season left the ''Revenge'' trapped in the Northern Colonies, and as his crew grew restless, he was compelled to return to piracy despite decreased tolerance for pirates in the region.

During the {{Wiki|Battle of Cape Fear River (1718)|Battle of Cape Fear River}}, Bonnet's crew engaged Royal Marines led by Colonel {{Wiki|William Rhett}}, and was captured. Though he attempted escape, he was recaptured by Colonel Rhett and was hanged for piracy. Eyewitnesses reported being moved to tears by his remorse in the last moments before the execution. However, Bonnet left clues for Edward Kenway, who followed in Bonnet's footsteps on the island of [[Saint Lucia]], and uncovered the secrets of the pirate's adventures.

==Personality and characteristics==
[[File:Lively Havana 9.png|thumb|250px|Stede waving at Havana's citizens]]
Stede Bonnet was a jolly and gracious man, shown especially by his great respect for Edward Kenway, who saved his life, and his ability to see a silver lining to any situation. However, this came paired with naivety, as Bonnet clearly did not understand the potential dangers he could have faced while traveling with Edward, nor for the consequences of piracy, passing it off for grand adventure.

While sailing under Thatch, Bonnet showed more courage than earlier, being toughened up by living with the pirates. Of course, when Thatch was demonstrating to Edward what it meant to instill fear in men, Bonnet still cowered weakly when Thatch used him as an example. Despite this, Stede left Thatch's crew in good spirits, even commenting to Kenway the great impact that the man had on his self-esteem and confidence, as his last words to Kenway involved Bonnet thanking him for his help.

Trivia:
Historically,Bonnet was believed to be one of those few pirates who forced their prisoners to 'walk the plank' execution which became a familliar stereotype for piracy. No historical evidence supported this and neither did Edward or any of his friends mentioned that Bonnet did such an atrocity. Also,Bonnet was actually cheated by Thatch,who took his fleet and most of his treasures and left him only the revenge as his ship. Again this was not mention by Kenway nor any of the two in the game and novelization.

The '''House of Pazzi '''was a familial group of [[Tuscany|Tuscan]] nobles who owned [[Banks|banks]] throughout the [[Italy|Italian]] city of [[Florence]] during the 15th century. Affiliated with the [[Templars]], the Pazzi family became infamous for their failed attempt to gain control of the city through [[pazzi conspiracy|a conspiracy]] to murder its rulers, the [[House of Medici]].

==History==
===Plotting the Conspiracy===
Less powerful rivals of the Medici, the Pazzi family, along with [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the [[Grand Master]] of the Templar Order, planned a conspiracy to overthrow the [[House of Medici|Medici]] by killing the family's most prominent members, [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] and [[Giuliano de' Medici|Giuliano de'Medici]].
===The Conspiracy===
In 1476 [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni Auditore]][[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze| da Firenze]], Lorenzo's close friend and a member of the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]], discovered the involvement of the Pazzi family in a conspiracy against the Medici. Moving to forestall this, Giovanni managed to have [[Francesco de' Pazzi]] put in jail. However, the plot had already reached members of the Medici government itself. [[Uberto Alberti]], the Gonfaloniere of Justice, freed Francesco, and executed Giovanni for treason alongside his sons [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]] and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]], removing the [[House of Auditore|Auditore family]] from Florence.

With Giovanni dead, there was no barrier between the Pazzi and control of Florence, until [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]], Giovanni's only surviving son, decided to avenge his family's murder. Joining with his uncle [[Mario Auditore|Mario]][[mario Auditore| Auditore da Firenze]] and his [[mercenaries]], Ezio infiltrated [[San Gimignano]]. There he witnessed a meeting between the Pazzi family and Rodrigo Borgia. During the ensuing battle between the mercenaries and Pazzi forces, Ezio killed his brash and aggressive rival [[Vieri de' Pazzi]], the youngest of the Pazzi conspirators.

===The Battle at the Duomo===
In 1478, Ezio returned to Florence to spy on the Pazzi as they were meeting with other Templars in the catacombs under the [[Basilica di Santa Maria Novella|Santa Maria Novella]] church. It was in this meeting that they planned the assassinations of both Lorenzo de' Medici and his brother Giuliano de' Medici. Among the conspirators were [[Stefano da Bagnone]], [[Bernardo Baroncelli]], [[Francesco Salviati]], [[Antonio Maffei]], [[Jacopo de' Pazzi|Jacopo]][[Jacopo de' Pazzi| de' Pazzi]] and Francesco de' Pazzi. Rodrigo Borgia led the meeting and informed the conspirators that they had been given "spiritual" and military support from {{Wiki|Pope Sixtus IV}}.

The [[Wolves in Sheep's Clothing|next day]], the conspirators executed their plan. They publicly attacked the Medici brothers in front of the Duomo with Francesco and Bernardo brutally stabbing Giuliano to death. At the same time, Stefano and Antonio severely wounded Lorenzo, but fled when he drew his sword. Francesco and others continued to attack Lorenzo, but withdrew when Ezio Auditore da Firenze intervened. Lorenzo was forced to retreat to his [[Palazzo Medici|Palazzo]], while Pazzi forces engaged Medici loyalists in earnest. As Ezio escorted Lorenzo back to his Palazzo, the latter loudly declared that Francesco de Pazzi would die and that his entire family would be erased.

Francesco gained control of the [[Palazzo della Signoria]], but Medici forces continued to resist. Meanwhile, Ezio fought his way to the roof of the palazzo and confronted Francesco. Francesco fled immediately, but was pursued over the city's rooftops, hunted down, and killed by Ezio.

===The Conspiracy's Failure===
When Jacopo arrived at the Palazzo with the support of many Florentine [[civilians|citizens]], it was far too late; Francesco's naked corpse had already been hung from the roof, causing the panicked Jacopo to flee the city on [[Horses|horseback]]. After their plot failed, the conspirators fled Florence to hide in the city of San Gimignano and in the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Despite this, Ezio hunted down and slew all of the conspirators. Jacopo went to plead his case to Rodrigo Borgia, meeting him covertly in an [[Antico Teatro Romano|ancient Roman theatre]], but was instead fatally wounded and used as bait to trap Ezio. Ezio fought his way out of the trap and ended Jacopo's suffering, and the Pazzi family with it. With its ruling family gone, San Gimignano was taken over by the Medici.

With the rule of the Medici, Lorenzo honored his promise and stripped the Pazzi family of everything, wiped their names from the tombstones, and threw them into prison, even those who played no part in the conspiracy.
==Trivia==
*The term ''pazzi'' is a plural of Italian ''pazzo'', which translates to either "crazy", "fool", or "madman" in English.
*Historically, the Pazzi family had members fight in the First Crusade during the Siege of [[Jerusalem]], the first {{Wiki|Christianity|Christian}} soldier to climb over the walls of Jerusalem was Pazzo Pazzi, an ancestor of the 15th century family members.
*The Pazzi's personal guards were the only guards to patrol Florence until Sequence 4. However, Medici guards did not appear in Florence from 1476 until 1478 even though the Medici were in power.
**The Pazzi guards were recognizable by their black, red and gold clothes.
*Francesco de' Pazzi was the only non-Assassin to perform a [[Leap of Faith]] in ''[[Assassin's Creed II]]'', and can be difficult to pursue due to his exceptional [[freerunning]] abilities.
*There was also an unnamed member of the Pazzi family, Francesco de' Pazzi's cousin, whom Ezio assassinated during a [[Crash a Party|contract]] in Venice. It is unknown whether he was involved in the conspiracy or a member of the Templar Order.
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Renaissance]]'' it was stated that the Pazzi emblem was two dolphins on a blue background, as historically accurate, whereas in ''Assassin's Creed II'', it is shown as two dolphins on a red background.
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]'', Ezio briefly sung a song about Vieri and Francesco de' Pazzi's deaths while masquerading as a minstrel.
*Historically, in the 16th century the Pazzi owned the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_di_Maiano Villa di Maiano], the probable inspiration for the [[Villa Auditore]].
*Historically, the Pazzi returned to Florence after [[Piero de Medici]] was overthrown and supported Girolamo Savonarola's rule, only to be banished by the Medici again when they returned to power after the friar's execution.
'''Louis-Joseph Gaultier, Chevalier de la Vérendrye''' (1717 – 1760) was a [[France|French]]-[[Canada|Canadian]] of noble upbringing and a member of the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]] operating in [[North America]] during the [[Seven Years' War]]. He captained the ''[[Gerfaut]]'', a [[Man O' War]].

==Biography==
===Early life===
{{Quote|I know him only as one of a family of explorers, extending the boundaries of the known world.|James Cook on Chevalier, 1760.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
Louis-Joseph was born in 1717 to a family of explorers on Île aux Vaches at {{Wiki|Lake Saint Pierre}}. In 1735, he went to {{Wiki|Fort Saint Charles}} on {{Wiki|Lake of the Woods}} in his first expedition with his {{Wiki|Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye|father}}.

The following year, Louis-Joseph re-established {{Wiki|Fort Maurepas (Canada)|Fort Maurepas}}. His father rewarded him with the title of "Chevalier", passing over Louis-Joseph's older brother to do so. Chevalier would spend the next four years exploring {{Wiki|North Dakota}} and {{Wiki|Manitoba}}.

In 1744, Chevalier became the commander of a frontier post for the French government. Around this time, he met [[Achilles Davenport]] and [[Liam O'Brien]], helping them complete an Assassin mission. In 1746, Achilles asked Chevalier to join the Assassin Order, an offer the latter gladly accepted. With Chevalier, the Assassins gained valuable allies among smugglers, pirates and the French government, such as [[Le Chasseur]].

Chevalier's father died in 1749, and further westward expeditions were disrupted by politics. That year, Chevalier also met the Assassin recruit [[Shay Cormac]], and the two took an instant dislike to one another.

Around 1750, Chevalier worked with another recruit, [[Robert Faulkner]], to prepare a shipping route from the colonies to the Assassins in [[Europe]]. In 1751, Faulkner wrote to Chevalier, offering to serve as first mate aboard the Assassin flagship, the ''[[Aquila]]''. He also mentioned his investigations into the French shipping companies of the [[Magdelaine Lévesque|Lévesque]] and [[Madeleine de L'Isle|de L'Isle]] families, which he suspected to be Templar-owned. Faulkner told Chevalier that he still had to secure his operations before fully joining the Assassins, and shared his worries for the future with him.

===Meeting with smugglers===
{{Quote|The Royal Navy attacked my vessel and forced my men to flee! We are stranded, and what is worse, the smugglers we were supposed to meet have been taken prisoner.|Chevalier to Shay and Liam, 1752.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
[[File:Way the Wind Blows 5.png|thumb|250px|left|Shay and Chevalier fighting]]
In January 1752, Chevalier was on a mission to meet with a group of smugglers. Accompanying him were Shay and Liam, although Chevalier refused to tell the former about the actual purpose of the mission. While Shay and Liam went [[hunting]], the smugglers were captured and Chevalier's ship, the ''Gerfaut'', was attacked and badly damaged by the [[Royal Navy]].

While Chevalier tended to his wounded men, Shay and Liam arrived. Angered by their late arrival, Chevalier argued with Shay. The argument soon turned into a fist-fight when Chevalier punched Shay. However, the fight was stopped by Liam shortly after.

At Liam's suggestion, Chevalier treated his men, while Liam and Shay freed the smugglers. While doing so, Shay boarded a sloop-of-war called the ''[[Morrigan]]'' and freed the captive smugglers. Chevalier and Liam helped eliminate the British sailors on board, and took control of the ship. The ''Morrigan'' then sunk the British ships that were attacking the ''Gerfaut'', allowing Chevalier to return to his ship. During that year, Chevalier also returned to fur trading, although his business did not go well for him.

===Finding the Pieces of Eden===
{{Dialogue2|Chevalier|Ah, the cabbage farmer returns. About time. We have a lead on the curious manuscript.|Shay|I'd be surprised if you could read it.|No one can read it, imbécile. In March 1752, the Assassin [[Adéwalé]] visited the [[Davenport Homestead]] and met with Achilles. As Chevalier guarded the meeting, Adéwalé revealed that during the [[1751 Port-au-Prince earthquake|earthquake]] in [[Haiti]] the year before, the Templars had stolen two [[Pieces of Eden]] from the Assassins: the [[Precursor boxes|Precursor box]] and the [[Voynich manuscript|Manuscript]].

[[File:Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy 4.png|thumb|250px|Chevalier and Shay meeting with Le Chasseur]]
A month later, Chevalier met with Shay and Liam at [[Port la Joye]]. They then set sail for [[Anticosti Island]] to meet with Le Chasseur, who had intelligence regarding the artifacts. Along the way, the three discussed various Assassin affairs and also plundered a British [[schooner]]. After upgrading the ''Morrigan'', they sank a fleet of British ships and arrived at Anticosti.

Meeting with Le Chasseur at the island's fort, they learned that the Manuscript was in the hands of the Templar [[Lawrence Washington]]. After assassinating Washington, Shay learned that the Box and Manuscript had been entrusted to two other Templars, [[Samuel Smith]] and [[James Wardrop]], respectively.

===Chasing Smith===
{{Dialogue3|Shay|There he is!|Chevalier|Most fortunate timing. Lady Luck never ceases to smile on you.|He's seen us. Give chase!|But hold your fire! We must not damage the Box or risk losing it to the sea.|Shay and Chevalier finding Smith, 1754.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
[[File:One Little Victory 1.png|thumb|250px|left|Chevalier looking at the damaged ''Gerfaut'']]
In May 1754, the ''Gerfaut'' was severely damaged during a battle with three British ships near [[St. John's]]. Watching the ship from the settlement with Le Chasseur, Chevalier was joined by Shay. Le Chasseur informed the two that Smith had returned from a voyage to [[Europe]], having failed to activate the Box. With Smith nearby, Chevalier joined Shay and Liam aboard the ''Morrigan'', now outfitted with [[Puckle gun]]s and an icebreaker ram.

While wondering why Smith sailed in such a remote area, Chevalier suggested sinking the Templar's ship to be rid of him easily. However, Shay reminded him that Smith likely held the Box, and the Assassins therefore decided not to damage the ship. Although Smith's schooner led the ''Morrigan'' into a skirmish and attempted to deter the pursuers with burning oil, Shay gave chase and eventually assassinated Smith at [[Terra Nova]], recovering the artifact in the process.

===Confrontation at the Homestead===
{{Quote|Has Chevalier gone mad? He'll destroy the manor!|An Assassin seeing the ''Gerfaut'' bombarding the Davenport Homestead, 1756.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
After Shay recovered the Manuscript from Wardrop, the Assassins sent him to [[Lisbon]] to find a Piece of Eden underneath the [[Carmo Convent]]. In the process however, Shay unintentionally caused a devastating [[1755 Lisbon earthquake|earthquake]] which nearly destroyed the city.

[[File:Freewill 14.png|thumb|250px|Chevalier and the Assassins confronting Shay]]
A disillusioned Shay subsequently stole the Manuscript from Achilles at the homestead in order to keep the Assassins from discovering another [[Isu|First Civilization]] site. While Shay attempted to escape, Achilles ordered the Assassins to stop him. As such, Chevalier bombarded the Homestead with the ''Gerfaut''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> mortars.

Chevalier and the other Assassins later cornered Shay at a cliff. When Shay attempted to leap into the water, Chevalier shot him in the shoulder, causing him to fall to his apparent death. It wasn't until August 1757 that the Assassins learned of Shay's survival and defection to the Templar Order.

===Assassin expedition===
{{Dialogue2|Chevalier|So, cabbage farmer, are you still convinced the Templars are right?|Shay|Convinced to the end. You bastard! Achilles and Liam have already headed north!|Hope was right... I do make... a good... distraction.|Chevalier during his final moments and Shay inspecting his charts, 1760.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
[[File:The Heist 1.png|thumb|250px|left|Chevalier meeting with the Assassins in New York]]
In 1759, the Assassins were preparing an expedition to another precursor site. In October of that year, they met at the [[New York City|New York]] harbor, discussing their progress. Chevalier told Achilles that although they were gathering ships and supplies, it was difficult to do so without a specific destination. [[Hope Jensen]] assured Chevalier that several of her men could participate in the expedition.

Liam noted that Hope would soon be able to active the Box and find another precursor site, and the Assassins left the area. After Hope activated the Box in her [[Hope Jensen's mansion|mansion]], Liam left with it and the Manuscript to meet with Chevalier in the Arctic. Afterwards, Shay chased after Hope and assassinated her. In her final words, Hope revealed that her death merely served as a distraction for Liam to reach Chevalier.

Meeting with Liam, Chevalier was entrusted to keep the Box from falling into the Templars' hands. In order to do this, he sent the artifact away to an unknown location.

A short time after, Chevalier sailed to an Assassin outpost on Anticosti, leaving encrypted [[maps]] of his route to the site in the hands of the captain there. Shay recovered these maps and enlisted the aid of [[James Cook]] in tracking down Chevalier and acquiring his charts of the precursor site. Knowing that Shay would chase after the Assassin expedition, Chevalier volunteered to stay behind with the ''Gerfaut'' and a fleet of ships to stop him.

After the ''Morrigan'' sank the fleet, the ''Gerfaut'' ambushed it with mortars. Despite the ''Gerfaut''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> greater size and firepower, it was disabled by the ''Morrigan''. It was soon boarded by Shay and his crew. As the two fought, Chevalier taunted the former Shay, claiming that while the former Assassin would be forgotten to history, Chevalier would be remembered for his deeds.

[[File:Cold Fire 7.png|thumb|250px|Chevalier's final moments]]
A defeated Chevalier made his way to the ship's railing. As Shay approached him, he attempted to strike the Templar, only to be punched in the stomach. Looking at the charts, Shay was furious to discover that Achilles and Liam had already headed north to the site. Chevalier mocked his former colleague, claiming that Hope was right in that he had made a good distraction for him. In a fit of rage, Shay threw Chevalier overboard to a watery death. Chevalier's maps were subsequently bequeathed to Cook. He was possibly rescued by another ship before sending the precursor box away. However, Shay had left him in such bad condition that he never did make a full recovery.

His death was later recorded to have happened on 15 November 1761, when the ship he was on sank off {{Wiki|Cape Breton Island|Cape Breton}} on its way to France to deliver the precursor box.

==Personality and characteristics==
{{Dialogue|Gist|From the brief encounters I've had with him, I can tell you he's an irascible person.|Shay|That's a polite way of saying he's a cantankerous bastard.|Shay Cormac and Christopher Gist discussing Chevalier, 1760.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
[[File:The Way The Wind Blows 13.png|thumb|250px|left|Chevalier berating Shay]]
Chevalier could often be seen as short-tempered and impatient, and was easily angered. He showed a dislike for Shay Cormac, believing him to be ignorant, reckless and disrespectful. Chevalier also frequently mocked Shay's lower-class origins, calling him a "cabbage farmer". At one point, Chevalier's irritation with his fellow Assassin led him to fight Shay.

He was also quick to correct Shay at any given opportunity, and usually underestimated his skills. He dismissed Shay's ship, the ''Morrigan'' as useless and ineffectual, while praising his own ship and skills as a sailor. When Shay fought Chevalier in 1760, the latter was convinced that he could kill the Templar with ease.

Despite this, Chevalier was loyal and dedicated to the Assassin cause, believing that the Brotherhood was unequivocally without fault and reminded Shay not to question its actions and purpose. He was highly proud of his membership within the Order, and looked up to other Assassins such as Adéwalé.

Chevalier believed that negotiation with the Templars was impossible, jokingly asking Shay if he would "smile and wish them a good day as they lay their boot on [his] neck", when the latter suggested dialogue with their enemies. Chevalier was often very secretive about his activities, which caused his allies to be wary of him.

When Shay pursued the Assassin expedition, Chevalier volunteered to distract him from Achilles and Liam. Even in his final moments, Chevalier attempted to attack Shay when the latter claimed to fully believe in the Templar cause.

===Equipment and skills===
{{Quote|(I've been practicing my aim, I'll get a bullseye this time.)|Chevalier to Shay, 1760.|Assassin's Creed: Rogue}}
[[File:Cold Fire 6.png|thumb|250px|Shay dueling Chevalier]]
Chevalier was among the most experienced sailors in the Colonial Brotherhood, captaining a Man O' War named the ''Gerfaut''. He was able to use a snowstorm to surprise the ''Morrigan'' and bombard it with mortars.

As an officer in the [[French Army]] and an Assassin, Chevalier was highly skilled in combat. Wielding a [[cutlass|sword]] in conjunction with a [[Firearms|pistol]], he was able to kill several British sailors in a matter of seconds. Chevalier wore a long hooded black coat, as well as a leather bracer on his left arm. Like most Assassins, he wore a red belt, fastened with a buckle in the shape of the [[Assassin insignia]].

Trivia:

-Historically, de la Verendrye died on Cape Breton while returning to France when the British began occupying his family's trading outposts at 1761. And his ship is called the Auguste, a frigate rather than the Gerfaut.

-Among all members of the Colonial Assassins, Chevalier was the only one not seen wielding at least one Hidden Blade.
