The '''Passetto di Borgo''' was an eight-hundred meter long elevated walkway running through the center of [[Rome]], which connected the [[Cappella Sistina]] with the [[Castel Sant'Angelo]].

==History==
On December 28, 1499, the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] fought his way along the Passetto di Borgo in order to reach the [[Grand Master]] of the [[Templars]], [[Rodrigo Borgia]].<ref name="AC2">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]''</ref> After killing Rodrigo on August 18th 1503, his son [[Cesare Borgia|Cesare]] used the Passetto to reach the [[Ezio's Apple|Apple of Eden]] which Rodrigo had hidden in the courtyard in front of the [[Basilica di San Pietro]].<ref name="ACBH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

==Trivia==
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed II]],'' the Passetto di Borgo is significantly larger, looking much more like a city wall than the raised walkway it is in reality.
*In ''Assassin's Creed II'', the Passetto di Borgo is wrongly placed on the Tiber banks.
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'', the Passetto di Borgo is an 'out-of-bounds' area.
[[File:AC2 guard types.jpg|thumb|300px|Five guard types; the Agile, Archer, Brute, Militia, and Seeker.]]
'''Guards''' were members of either a local militia, or an organized military force. They were usually assigned to defend or control access to locations of interest, or protect certain individuals.

The colors and styles of their uniforms varied over time, as well as denoted their military rank, allegiance, and combat specialization.

==Factions==
===High Middle Ages===
[[File:AC guard chase.jpg|250px|thumb|right|[[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] fleeing several of King Richard's guards.]]
During the [[Third Crusade]], soldiers wore the armor and colors of either [[Saracens]] or [[Crusaders]], with the latter subdivided into the personal guards of King [[Richard I of England]], or the Knights [[Templars|Templar]], [[Knights Hospitalier|Hospitalier]], and [[Knights Teutonic|Teutonic]].<ref name="AC">''[[Assassin's Creed]]''</ref>

Saracens spoke Turkish or Arabic, while Crusaders spoke mostly English, with some Captains and Sergeants speaking French or German. Templar Knights, however, spoke all of the dialects.<ref name="AC"/>

Saracens wore {{Wiki|Lamellar armour|lamellar armor}}, and either {{Wiki|Spangenhelm|spangenhelms}} or turbans. All Crusaders wore surcoats and chainmail, while some also wore spangenhelms or {{Wiki|Great helm|great helms}}.<ref name="AC"/>

[[File:Kill2.jpg|250px|left|thumb|Altaïr fighting Talal's personal guard.]]
The colors of Crusader surcoats differed with their affiliation, with King Richard's personal guard wearing red and white, Templars wearing white with red crosses, Hospitaliers wearing black with white crosses, and Teutonics wearing white with black crosses.<ref name="AC"/>

Guards for several smaller factions or individuals possessed their own uniforms as well, such as the black, gold-striped clothes of [[Talal]]'s men, or the short white robes and gray-hoods of the guards of [[Masyaf]].<ref name="AC"/>

{{-}}
===Renaissance===
Throughout the [[Renaissance]], multiple factions of guards existed, as they were affiliated to either individual cities or people instead of armies. They bore unique colors, often along with the family or city crest.<ref name="AC2">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]''</ref>

[[File:NVS 5.png|thumb|250px|right|Four Pazzi guards.]]
Guards for the [[House of Pazzi]] wore black caps, red sleeves with gold streaks, and the crest of the Pazzi. They could only be found in [[Florence]] and [[Tuscany]], during the height of the family's influence, until the end of the [[Pazzi Conspiracy]].<ref name="AC2"/>

Guards serving the [[House of Medici]] wore dark yellow caps, yellow and white striped sleeves, black armor plates, and the crest of the Medici. They were notably seen during the repression of the Pazzi Conspiracy in Florence, as well as in [[San Gimignano]].<ref name="AC2"/>

Guards of the [[House of Borgia]] wore dark red caps, black sleeves with dark red streaks, and the crest of the Borgia. They often accompanied [[Rodrigo Borgia]], and could also be found in [[Romagna]] during the Templar meeting, in the [[Cannaregio District]] of [[Venice]],<ref name="AC2"/> or in Florence during the [[Bonfire of the Vanities]].<ref name="AC2 - Bonfire of the Vanities">''Assassin's Creed II'' - ''[[Bonfire of the Vanities (DLC)]]''</ref>

[[File:Florentine Fiasco 1.png|thumb|250px|left|[[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] bypassing a line of Savonarola's guards.]]
Guards of [[Girolamo Savonarola]] wore black caps, sleeves, and armor plates. Instead of a coats of arms, they bore a small portrait of Savonarola himself, with three red beams shining down upon him. They were notably seen in Florence during the Bonfire of the Vanities, often repressing the Borgia guards attempting to take the [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]].<ref name="AC2 - Bonfire of the Vanities"/>

Guards serving the city of [[Forlì]] wore dark green caps and sleeves, as well as the crest of [[Caterina Sforza]]'s family, who ruled Romagna.<ref name="AC2"/>

The guards who served the city of Venice wore blue caps and sleeves, with gold armor plates bearing the coat of arms of the Italian city. The quality of their armor was significantly better than that of their counterparts in other cities, protecting them from much damage.<ref name="AC2"/>

Those who served the [[Vaticano District|Vatican]] wore white caps, red and white sleeves, and the coat of arms of the city of [[Rome]]. Similarly to Venetian guards, their armor was more resilient than most.<ref name="AC2"/>

[[File:Gatekeeper 2.png|thumb|250px|right|A contingent of French soldiers.]]
Guards and soldiers of [[France]] wore dark blue and white. They were commonly seen in Rome after the alliance of [[Cesare Borgia]] and the French general [[Octavian de Valois]].<ref name="Brotherhood">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

At that time, French soldiers were stationed in either the main camp in [[Castra Praetoria]], or in military guard posts throughout the [[Campagna District]] of Rome. They remained in the city throughout [[Liberation of Rome|its liberation]], often fighting the [[mercenaries]] of the [[Assassins|Assassin]] condottiero, [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]].<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Guards from the town of [[Viana]] in Spain wore yellowish-green armor. They notably participated in the [[Siege of Viana]], as they defended [[Viana Castle]] from King [[John III of Navarre|John III]]'s invading Navarre troops, who wore red uniforms with yellow accents.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

[[File:Fourth part 3.png|thumb|250px|left|Ottomans guarding the docks.]]
[[Constantinople]] in the Renaissance was divided into two distinct factions, the ruling [[Ottoman Empire|Ottomans]], and the remnants of the ancient [[Byzantines|Byzantine Empire]].<ref name="Revelations">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

Though Constantinople was held and controlled by the former, guards of the latter constantly fought for control. The region of [[Cappadocia]], particularly [[Derinkuyu]], remained in Byzantine hands.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Ottoman guards wore green uniforms with red accents, while Byzantines wore small gray capes, and dark red and white uniforms. The Byzantine guards also distinctly wore the black eagle crest of the Byzantine Empire's [[Manuel Palaiologos|Palaiologos]] Dynasty.<ref name="Revelations"/>

==Ranking==
===High Middle Ages===
====Regular====
Regular guards were the most common, but lightest equipped of the guard ranks. Regular Crusader guards did not have helmets, and only wore leather armor, while Saracen ones wore turbans, and light lamellar armor.<ref name="AC"/>

In combat, they were not skilled enough to grab, counterattack, or perform a combo. They could only deflect attacks, with a 25% chance of dodging a light attack.<ref name="AC"/>

====Sergeant====
[[File:AC guard sergeant.jpg|250px|thumb|right|Altaïr attacking a Crusader Captain flanked by two Sergeants.]]
Sergeants were middle-ranked soldiers, and were equipped with helmets and heavier armor. Crusaders wore chainmail, and the Saracens possessed medium lamellar armor.<ref name="AC"/>

They could grab targets, and had a 50% chance of breaking a grab attack, as well as a 50% chance of countering or dodging a light attack. They also had a 25% chance of breaking defenses, but could not perform combo attacks.<ref name="AC"/>

====Captain====
Captains were the most powerful guards, with the exception of Templar Knights. Saracens wore Baidah helmets and heavy lamellar armor, while Crusaders wore chainmail, and varying knight helms.<ref name="AC"/>

Guards at this rank were also able to grab, and had a 75% chance of breaking a grab attack, as well as countering or dodging a light attack. They also had a 50% chance of breaking defenses. If a successful heavy attack was delivered, they could perform a combo attack.<ref name="AC"/>

===Renaissance===
====Militia====
[[File:Escape debt 2.png|thumb|250px|left|Three Militia guards cornering [[Egidio Troche]].]]
Militia were the lowest ranking guards, and wore very little armor. They also had the lowest morale, and were likely to flee a battle if they were losing.<ref name="AC2"/>

Militia could be found almost everywhere, and wielded a large variety of [[Swords and Maces|medium-ranged weapons]]. They were not especially agile, but could climb up to the rooftops, albeit slowly, in order to pursue a target Assassin.<ref name="AC2"/>

Of the guard types, Militia were the only ones who could be fooled into picking up coins, should they be thrown as a distraction.<ref name="AC2"/>

====Elite====
[[File:AC2 florence elite.jpg|thumb|250px|right|Ezio attacking an Elite and Militia guard in Florence.]]
Elites were stronger than Militia, and wore a moderate amount of armor. They could withstand more damage, and were capable of dodging enemy attacks.<ref name="AC2"/>

They were also more courageous than Militia, but could still be forced to retreat, especially if their Leader (or a high-ranking specialized guard) should be killed near them.<ref name="AC2"/>

====Leader====
Leaders were the best fighters, and the most tenacious of all the regular guards. They wore slightly more armor than the Elites, and had distinct, full-faced helmets.<ref name="AC2"/>

They were resilient, and could withstand several attacks before they could be killed. They were also harder to disarm, as well as resistant to being grabbed.<ref name="AC2"/>

====Captain====
[[File:Demilitarization 2.png|thumb|250px|left|[[Cesare Borgia]] speaking with his Captains.]]
Captains of the Renaissance were usually found leading contingents of lower-ranked soldiers. They fought similarly to Leaders, but were more heavily and intricately armored, with full feathered helms.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Twelve [[Borgia Captains]] were particularly distinguished members of this rank, and led troops at each of Rome's twelve [[Borgia Towers]]. They were armored identically to other Captains, but wore white capes with the Borgia crest.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Though most were courageous and skilled enough to counter most attacks, some were cowardly, and would flee into their tower should it be attacked, until the next guard patrol was posted.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

{{-}}
==Ranged types==
As most standard guards only had medium or short-ranged weapons, they were often supplemented by ranged guard types, who could attack from a distance. More types were added over time, with the advancement of weapon technology.<ref name="AC"/><ref name="AC2"/>

===Archers===
{{Main|Archers}}
[[File:AC2 venice archer.jpeg|thumb|250px|right|Ezio pulling an archer from a rooftop in Venice.]]
Archers were guards armed with [[Bow|longbows]], who patrolled rooftops and watched for possible enemies below.<ref name="AC2"/> Outside of cities, they were posted on elevated watchtowers.<ref name="AC"/>

Crusader Archers wore the same uniforms as the standard guards of their faction, though they also had white hoods.<ref name="AC"/> In the Renaissance, Archers were usually of the Elite rank, and wore the same uniform as their standard counterparts.<ref name="AC2"/>

Once provoked due to an enemy approaching within a meter or so, an archer would cease firing arrows, and draw his medium-ranged weapon, such as a sword or mace. Though accurate and deadly from a distance, Archers did not pose a serious threat in close combat.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Crossbowmen===
{{Main|Crossbowmen}}
Similarly to Archers, Crossbowmen defended the rooftops or areas of interest, though the [[Crossbow]]s they wielded could be fired more quickly, and caused more damage.<ref name="Brotherhood"/> However, they did not completely replace Archers, as longbows were more accurate if used by a skilled guard.<ref name="Project Legacy">''[[Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy]]''</ref>

Unlike Archers, Crossbowmen had no melee weapon, and if their enemy drew too close, they would only back away and keep firing. They were also more vigilant, and possessed some [[Freerunning|free-running]] ability, which permitted them to more closely investigate intruders.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

In Rome, Crossbowmen could be distinguished by their striped berets and light armor.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

===Arquebusiers===
{{Main|Arquebusiers}}
[[File:Vilified 11 v.png|thumb|250px|left|A line of arquebusiers.]]
The Arquebusiers (also called Gunmen or Riflemen) were [[Firearms|firearm]]-wielding soldiers who patrolled rooftops, protected high-value locations, and guarded important people.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Though Arquebusiers did not have as great a range as Crossbowmen, what they lacked in distance, they made up for in power. Their shots dealt significant damage to both targets and enemy armor.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

In the Renaissance, they wore heavy armor and full helmets, as well as belts of gunpowder and ammunition.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

===Bombmen===
In Constantinople, Bombmen wielded [[Thunder Bombs]] and [[Short blades|short blades]], and commonly guarded the rooftops in high traffic areas, such as the docks, arsenal, and harbor. They would also participate in the protection of [[Assassin Dens|Templar dens]], and would attack from the safety of reinforced sentry boxes.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Byzantine Bombmen wore uniforms similar to Almogavars, though with longer red capes.<ref name="Revelations"/>

==Specialized types==
Certain high-ranking guards possessed unique qualities, usually granting them an advantage in combat through added speed, strength, or defense skills. They would often act as leaders for patrols of standard guards, and possessed uncommon weapons or armor.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Agiles===
{{Main|Agile guards}}
[[File:654.jpg|thumb|250px|right|Ezio fleeing an Agile.]]
Agiles were lightly-armored, quick moving guards. They were one of the types capable of outrunning Assassins, and were also skilled free-runners. They more commonly fled to alert nearby guards, rather than face an enemy directly.<ref name="AC2"/>

During pursuits alongside other guards, Agiles would usually catch up to a target first and injure them with the short blades they wielded. In battle, they were very light on their feet and could dodge nearly all attacks.<ref name="AC2"/>

Agiles wore the least armor of any guard, with only a light leather chest guard, and metal helmet and spaulders. Due to their increased vulnerability, they were also the most cowardly of the specialized types.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Brutes===
{{Main|Brutes}}
[[File:brute_die.jpg|thumb|250px|left|Ezio throwing an axe at a Brute.]]
Brutes were the most heavily-armored guards during the Renaissance. They moved slowly due to the [[Heavy weapons|two-handed weapons]] they wielded, but compensated through resilience and power.<ref name="AC2"/>

They were not very vigilant, and could not normally distinguish Assassins from anyone else in a crowd. In guard patrols, they often acted as the leader, as they had the highest morale of any guard type, fleeing only if they were disarmed and could not obtain another weapon.<ref name="AC2"/>

Brutes could be easily seen from their large, reinforced armor and closed helms.<ref name="AC2"/> Brutes in Rome had more intricate armor than those in other cities, with designs worked into the metal.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

===Seekers===
{{Main|Seekers}}
[[File:AC2 venice seeker.jpg|thumb|250px|right|Ezio about to assassinate a Seeker in Venice.]]
Seekers were guards who, as their name suggested, would search through [[Hiding Spots|hiding places]], on the suspicion that an Assassin had taken refuge within one. They always wielded [[Long weapons|polearms]], such as spears and halberds.<ref name="AC2"/>

Similarly to Brutes, they would lead patrols of guards, often halting the group to search any hiding spots they passed.<ref name="AC2"/> In battle, they had the second highest morale to Brutes, and were skilled enough to resist most attacks and counters.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

They were slightly more heavily-armored than a standard guard, though less so than Brutes, wearing a combination of chainmail and plate armor, as well as distinctive feathered helms.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Horsemen===
{{Main|Horsemen}}
[[File:Horsemen.jpg|thumb|250px|left|A horseman dueling Ezio.]]
Horsemen were mounted guards that possessed the ability to use a variety of weapons while on [[Horses|horseback]]. Their steeds allowed them to easily pursue targets, and strike pre-emptively.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Though they were vulnerable to long-ranged weapons such as [[throwing knives]] and crossbows, they could be easily dealt with after being knocked from the saddle, either by tripping their horse, or striking them from horseback.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Horsemen were equipped with both medium and long-ranged weapons, though none could wield polearms. They were armored similarly to Borgia Captains, albeit without the cape.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

===Almogavars===
{{Main|Almogavars}}
[[File:Curse of Romani 3.png|thumb|250px|right|Ezio aiming at a group of Almogavars.]]
Almogavars were heavily-armored Byzantine guards, who wielded two-handed axes. They were stationed in Byzantine-controlled districts of Constantinople, as well as in Derinkuyu during the Renaissance.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Comparable to Brutes, they fought with heavy weapons, and were slower than all other enemies. Due to their thick armor, they were very resilient, and could not be killed with a single bullet or crossbow bolt. However, they possessed a profound weakness to the effects of [[Datura Bombs]].<ref name="Revelations"/>

Their armor was scaled, with fur and particularly large metal spaders. They also wielded [[Almogavar Axe|unique axes]], with a pair of crescent-shaped blades.<ref name="Revelations"/>

===Varangians===
{{Main|Varangians}}
Varangians were the Byzantine equivalent of Seekers, and were stationed in both Constantinople and Derinkuyu. They were very skilled in battle, and could deflect nearly all strikes and counterattacks.<ref name="Revelations"/>

They wore heavy armor with short capes, as well as intricate winged helmets. They fought with halberds or spears, as well as short pistols.<ref name="Revelations"/>

==Expert types==
Expert guards were high-ranking guards, who were the most skilled and well-equipped of their time. They often possessed several of the qualities of specialized guards, and were limited in number.<ref name="AC"/><ref name="AC2"/>

===Templar Knights===
[[File:AC horseback charge.jpg|250px|thumb|right|Altaïr charging down a Templar Knight.]]
Templar Knights were particularly skilled Crusaders, and were stationed throughout the [[Kingdom]] and its cities. They would often position themselves with a wall or cliff to their back, to prevent them from being attacked from behind.<ref name="AC"/>

They were particularly vigilant, and could identify an Assassin from a crowd almost immediately, subsequently attacking them. Other guards held the knights in high regard, and would always stand back should the Templar Knight engage in battle with an Assassin.<ref name="AC"/>

They were similar to the Crusader Captains, but with unique armor. They wore chainmail and white surcoats with red crosses, as well as red lacquered great helms.<ref name="AC"/>

===Papal Guards===
{{Main|Papal Guard}}
[[File:ACB castel papal guards.png|thumb|250px|left|Four members of the Papal Guard.]]
The Papal Guard were elite soldiers commanded by the [[Papacy]], to serve and protect the pontiff during his tenure. They combined the best qualities of all the other specialized guards, being very powerful in battle, as well as quick on their feet.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

They wore intricate black and gold armor, as well as long dark capes, metal face masks and plumed helmets. They also wore crests painted on their chest guards, either displaying the crossed keys of the Papacy, or (in the 16th century) the red bull of the Borgia.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Papal guards could use a wide variety of weapons, including long or heavy ones, though they most commonly [[Dual-wielding|dual-wielded]] a pistol alongside a medium weapon.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

===Janissaries===
{{Main|Janissaries}}
[[File:ACR STORY 18.png|thumb|250px|right|Four Janissaries.]]
Janissaries were highly-trained soldiers, and the elite of the Ottoman Empire, serving as the private guards to the Sultan. Similarly to the Papal Guard, they encompassed all the skills of the specialized guards.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Their uniforms consisted of colorful robes with embroidered patterns, as well as black headdresses and metal face masks. They all wielded [[Janissary Kijil|unique kijils]], as well as short pistols for long-ranged attacks.<ref name="Revelations"/>

==Trivia==
;''Assassin's Creed II''
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed II]]'', the taunts Ezio said to Brutes were different from those he said to the other guards, mainly insulting them about their weight, as they were bulkier in stature.
*In the memory "[[Clothes Make the Man]]", [[Ugo]] told Ezio that the thieves were to impersonate the archers. Yet in the next memory, "[[Everything Must Go]]", after Ezio killed the archers on the rooftops, the thieves wore the armor of Leader guards instead of archer armor.
*In the memory "[[Infrequent Flier]]", a Brute and a Seeker could be seen stationed on a rooftop, despite being the only guards who could not climb or free-run.
*In the memory "[[Play Along]]", Ezio assassinated an Agile so he could disguise himself as a guard, but instead of having an Agile's outfit, he wore the outfit of a Leader guard.

;Others
[[File:Au Revoir 7.png|thumb|250px|right|Ezio wearing the French Captain armor.]]
*Several other guard types were present only in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines]]'' and ''[[Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles]]'', such as Shield Guards, Duelists, and unnamed robed guards wielding maces.
*In the memory "[[French Kiss]]", Ezio killed twenty French guards of different archetypes. However, in the following memories, Bartolomeo's mercenaries were equipped with only Leader armor, while Ezio wore armor similar to a Borgia Captain's.
**One peculiar fact was that while Ezio's armor during the memory was in French colors, no such French guard could ever be encountered.
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' and ''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]'', an extremely rare glitch could occur with a group of four guards. They would stand in place and would not pay any attention to Ezio, even if he killed someone nearby. He was free to attack them, in which case an execution would be performed, but it would not kill them, leaving them to simply stand up again.
*In PlayStation Home, the design of a Seeker could be purchased for an avatar, which also came with a spear. Similarly, on Xbox Live, it was possible to purchase the outfit of an Agile guard.
'''Pax Romana''' is the final playable memory in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''.

==Description==
After four years of searching for [[Cesare Borgia|Cesare]], [[Ezio]] finally found Cesare at the [[Siege of Viana]]. Ezio chased the Captain General across the [[Spain|Spanish]] plains, trying not to get involved in the fighting. Ezio climbed a destroyed [[House of Borgia|Borgia]] siege tower, and battled Cesare on the [[Viana]] [[Viana Castle|castle battlements]].

==Dialogue==
[[File:PaxR_8.png|thumb|250px|Ezio attempts to kill Cesare]]
Ezio charged at Cesare through a raging battlefield, and attempted to stab Cesare. Cesare caught Ezio's arm and struggled against him.
*'''Cesare:''' ''How did you find me?!''
*'''Ezio:''' ''The [[Ezio's Apple|Apple]] you stole from [[Mario Auditore]] led me here!''
Ezio forced Cesare down, but Cesare threw Ezio off of him. Ezio still managed to graze Cesare's neck guard.
*'''Cesare:''' (To his soldiers) ''Kill him! Kill the [[Assassin]]! Tear the'' maledetto bastardo ''(old fucker) to pieces!''
Ezio fought several Naverrese soldiers, until a Spanish cannonball hit close by. Ezio was knocked unconscious, but awakened shortly after to find a dead Naverrese on him, which he rolled off.
*'''Ezio:''' ''I need munitions.''
Ezio began to loot dead [[Guards|soldiers]].
*'''Spanish Civilian:''' ''Help yourself! There's more than enough to go around!''
After looting, Ezio climbed onto a stray, unarmored [[horse]].
*'''Ezio:''' ''Faster to travel by horse.''
[[File:PaxR 2.png|thumb|250px|Ezio fighting off the Viana infantry.]]
Ezio charged after Cesare, using his horse to jump across a large gap in a destroyed bridge. Not long afterwards, the horse was killed by a cannonball. Ezio continued along the path to find the ruins of a Vianan village. Ezio sneaked past the Spanish soldiers that were on guard.
*'''Navarre Seeker: '''''I heard Cesare Borgia commands the Navarrese.''
*'''Navarre Brute:''' ''Who?''
*'''Navarre Seeker:''' ''He once ruled all of Roma.''
*'''Navarre Brute: '''''Really? What happened?''
*'''Navarre Seeker:''' ''I heard the Assassin killed his supporters. Great rulers rise and fall like leaves in the wind.''
*'''Navarre Brute: '''''I will give you wind ''(Both laugh).
Ezio continued through the ruins until he reached an intact portion of it. Navarrese and Vianan soldiers were fighting in the streets. A Spanish woman ran to Cesare and begged him for help.
*'''Spanish Woman:''' ''¡Ayúdeme! ¡Dañan a mi hijo! ''(Help! My son is injured!)
Cesare nodded, then carried on walking into the village towards the fortress. Two Naverrese soldiers pulled the woman aside and one stabbed her with a Stiletto and spat on her corpse. Ezio chased after them, and saw some women being chased by more of Cesare's soldiers.
*'''Woman''': ''<nowiki>'</nowiki>¡Déjame en paz! ''(Leave me alone!)
*'''Soldier:''' ''I will not hurt you.''
Ezio continued through, battling soldiers on his way. At one point, he heard a Navarrese priest attempting to dishearten the Spanish.
*'''Priest:''' ''You brought this upon yourselves through sin. This is how the Lord punishes you. Ours is a just God, and this is justice. Praise the Lord! Thank you God for teaching us to be humble. To see our punishment for what it is, a call to spirituality. The Lord he giveth and the Lord he taketh away. So the truth is written. Amen!''
[[File:PaxR 3.png|thumb|250px|Leap of faith from the tower.]]
Ezio climbed a burning siege tower, and saw soldiers jumping off it as he climbed. The tower broke at the base, forcing him to perform a [[Leap of Faith]] as it collapsed. He fought off attacking guards until he reached another (sturdier) tower that was next to a wall, and climbed it. Ezio fought his way along the wall to find Cesare finishing off two soldiers.
*'''Ezio''': ''Cesare! The walls surround you. There is nowhere to run.''
Cesare turned to face Ezio and raises his sword.
*'''Cesare''': ''Come then, Ezio!''
The two began fighting. Throughout the fight, soldiers rushed in to aid Cesare, and Cesare taunted Ezio.
*'''Cesare''': ''I cannot die.''<br />''Fortuna (Fortune) will not fail me.''<br />''I am the best fighter who ever lived.''<br />''Stay back!''<br />''Defeat will never taint me!''<br />''An Auditore will never best me.''<br />''Roma, [[Italy|Italia]], España. They will all be mine.''<br />''Take that! ''
*''No matter what you do I will conquer all. ''
*''DIIIIIIIIIEEE!''
*''Give up Auditore, you are no match for me.''
*''I will hunt and kill all those you hold dear. ''
[[File:PaxR 5.png|250px|thumb|Ezio and Cesare locked in combat.]]
Despite the seemingly endless waves of soldiers, Ezio managed to slowly whittle away Cesare's armor. Eventually, Ezio weakened Cesare enough so that he could jump on top of Cesare and prepared to stab him with his [[Hidden Blade]].
[[File:PaxR 6.png|thumb|250px|Cesare falling from the walls of Viana's Castle to his death.]]
*'''Cesare:''' ''The throne was mine!''
*'''Ezio:''' ''Wanting something does not make it your right.''
*'''Cesare:''' ''What do you know?''
*'''Ezio:''' ''That a true leader empowers the people he rules.''
*'''Cesare:''' ''I will lead mankind into a new world!''
*'''Ezio:''' ''Che nessuno ricordi il tuo nome.'' (May no one remember your name.) ''Requiescat in pace.'' (Rest in peace.)
*'''Cesare:''' ''You cannot kill me! No man can murder me!''
*'''Ezio:''' ''Then I leave you in the hands of Fate!''
Ezio threw Cesare from the wall.

==Outcome==
Cesare Borgia was killed.
==Trivia==
*Despite being Spanish, during combat the guards use the same Italian dialogue as Roman guards.
*In the version of this memory viewed at the beginning of the game, part of the dialogue is edited, so as to prevent spoilers.
*In the beginning of the memory, the first guards Ezio encountered were actually Borgia guards, not Navarrese or Viana guards. This is odd because Borgia only had presence in Italy and were no longer in control during the Siege of Viana.
'''Emilio Barbarigo''' (1421 - 10 September 1485) was a [[Venice|Venetian]] merchant and tyrant of Venice, and secretly a member of the [[Templars|Templar Order]].

==Biography==
===Early life===
Emilio rose to power through support from his powerful family, the [[House of Barbarigo|Barbarigo]]. He then cornered the market by edging out his competition and managing to lobby the government. He later funded the entire Venetian police force, which kept his finances tax-free. With the new police force, Emilio kept the streets safe from crime and managed to eliminate any opposition or competition.

===Meeting in Tuscany===
[[File:With_Friends_9_v.png|thumb|250px|Emilio with Rodrigo Borgia at the meeting.]]
In 1480, Emilio attended a meeting within an [[Antico Teatro Romano|outdoor Roman theater]] in [[Tuscany]], organized and conducted by [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Templar Grand Master]] [[Rodrigo Borgia]]. The gathering was meant for the [[Pazzi Conspiracy|Pazzi conspirators]], but the only conspirator present was [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]].

The [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] learned of this meeting, and tailed Jacopo to the theater. Once Ezio reached the meeting, he hid near a large column at the back of the theater, and eavesdropped.

During the meeting, Jacopo spoke about his failure in the plot to kill the Medici in [[Florence]] with Rodrigo and Emilio. Jacopo attempted to blame Emilio, claiming he did not supply them with quality weapons.

However, Rodrigo soon intervened, shouting at Jacopo, and eventually stabbing him with a [[stiletto]]. Jacopo then pleaded to be spared, before Emilio shoved him to the ground, laughing sadistically.

With Jacopo injured on the stage floor, Rodrigo brandished his blade, and thrust it through Jacopo's neck. Cleaning off his bloodied blade, Rodrigo called out to Ezio, and had his guards seize the Assassin. Rodrigo told them to kill Ezio, before both he and Emilio departed from the theater.

===Merchant of Venice===
{{Quote|He is attempting to unify the merchants beneath a single banner. There's been resistance, some of it violent.|[[Alvise da Vilandino]] speaking about Emilio's attempts to unify the merchants.|Assassin's Creed II}}
By 1481 in Venice, Emilio had taken control of [[San Polo District|San Polo]], the mercantile district, and was ruling it with an iron fist. He charged the merchants rent, and even had his guards destroy their stand if it was not paid promptly. He also had his guards patrol there often, to ensure the district remained under his control.
[[File:EMG 3.png|thumb|250px|left|Antonio's thieves replacing Emilio's archers stationed around Seta.]]

He also provided weapons to the other Templars in Florence, and was able to maintain a large role in Templar affairs. He resided in a large palace within San Polo, called the [[Palazzo della Seta]], which was heavily guarded with a large iron fence, vigilant [[archers]], and fierce [[brutes]].

His oppression over the district attracted the attention of the [[Venice Thieves Guild|Venetian Thieves Guild]] which was based in the same district. The [[thieves]], led by [[Antonio de Magianis]], then allied themselves with Ezio and together they began to work to end Emilio's tyranny. The allies freed their captured men, killed the traitorous thieves who had been bribed by Emilio, and acquired the [[armor]] of Emilio's archers. Eventually, on 11 September 1485, four years after starting their preparations, the thieves believed it was time to strike. Ezio made his way onto the rooftops of the Palazzo, and began to observe his target.

===Death===
{{Dialogue2|Carlo|Your little house of cards is crumbling, Emilio.|Emilio|A minor setback. It will be dealt with. This povero scemo Antonio and his thieves...|Never mind them! [[File:EMG_4.png|thumb|250px|Carlo warning Emilio.]]
Spying on the meeting, Ezio noticed Emilio meeting with fellow Templar and member of the Council of Ten, [[Carlo Grimaldi]]. During their discussion, Carlo informed Emilio that Ezio was targeting him, and that he should stay vigilant of the Assassin. Carlo also told Emilio of a meeting that was to take place three days from then at the [[Santo Stefano]], which had been organized by Rodrigo. Before leaving, Carlo advised Emilio to leave Seta and reside somewhere less conspicuous.

After his meeting with Carlo, Emilio ordered one of his men to fetch his boat and to begin loading it when it had arrived. While waiting for his boat, Ezio managed to make his way into the courtyard, and assassinated Emilio with his [[hidden blade]]. During his final moments, Emilio claimed that he had sought unity, stability, and order, but that this progress demanded sacrifice.

==Personality and characteristics==
{{Dialogue2|Guard|You were told to stay home!|Merchant|But the rent is paid! I have every right to sell here!|Emilio disagrees!|A guard destroys a merchant's stand by order of Emilio.|Assassin's Creed II}}
[[File:With Friends 5 v.png|thumb|230px|left|An injured Jacopo pleads for his life to Emilio.]]

Emilio was an oppressive and demanding man, making sure the merchants in San Polo paid him rent. When they did not, however, he had their stands destroyed. He also was a man who took pride in his accomplishments and success, claiming he had worked too hard to be defeated by Ezio and the Assassins.

Emilio was also critical and argumentative with his fellow Templars, often blaming them, rather than himself, when plans failed. He called Jacopo de' Pazzi a coward at their Tuscan meeting, and blamed him for their failure in Florence, though Jacopo had only a minor role in the conspiracy. He also argued with fellow Templar Carlo Grimaldi, even when Carlo was attempting to warn him.

In terms of attire, Emilio dressed as a member of Venetian nobility, wearing a large set of bluish-green and yellow robes that extended from his neck to his ankles. He also wore an orante hat on his head, symbolizing his wealth. On the back of his outfit hung a thin dark cape to match his robes, which extended to his knee level.

==Final words==
*'''Ezio:''' ''Do not be afraid.''

'''Giovanni Auditore da Firenze''' (1436 – 1476) was a [[Florence|Florentine]] nobleman, and head of the [[House of Auditore|Auditore family]] in Florence.

A banker working for the [[House of Medici|Medici family]], Giovanni's true nature as an [[Assassins|Assassin]] was known only to a few. Raised and trained along with his brother [[Mario Auditore|Mario]] from birth to be an Assassin, Giovanni had been aware of the [[Templars|Templar Order]] for almost all of his life.

Giovanni was also the husband of [[Maria Auditore da Firenze|Maria Auditore]], and father to [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]], [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia]], and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]]. He sought to induct his children into the Order, but had only revealed his allegiance to his wife by the time of his death; despite this, he had already begun to train his eldest son in the Assassin ways, albeit secretively.

==Biography==
===Early years===
{{quote|Tu sei un Auditore. Sei un combattente. Perciò combatti! (You are an Auditore. You are a fighter. So fight!)|Giovanni speaking to Ezio at his birth.|Assassin's Creed II}}
The second son, or grandson, of [[Ilario Auditore]], Giovanni was born in [[Monteriggioni]], in 1436, two years after his elder brother Mario. From an early age, both Giovanni and his brother were taught the [[The Creed|ways of the Assassins]], although Giovanni was also tutored in banking and other subjects as well.<ref name="AC2"/>

With time, Giovanni left the [[Villa Auditore|family Villa]] and joined Ilario in Florence, where he was serving as Gonfaloniere to Cosimo de' Medici. In 1452, Giovanni met and married Maria de' Mozzi, to whom he revealed himself to be an Assassin. After four years, their first son Federico was born, followed by Ezio in 1459, Claudia in 1461, and Petruccio in 1463.<ref name="AC2"/>

Around the early 1450s, Giovanni first encountered a young [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], grandson to Cosimo. Lorenzo had fallen into the [[Arno]] river, and would have drowned had Giovanni not jumped in and rescued him. As a result of this event, Lorenzo later became Giovanni's close friend and patron; forging the ties between their families.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1454, Giovanni also aided the members of his Brotherhood in dealing with the [[Shroud of Eden]]. After Mario uncovered the artifact under Monteriggioni, he summoned his brother to bring it out of the city, and into the protection of the Order.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy]]'' - [[Chapter 3 - Mario Auditore|Italian Wars: Chapter 3 - Mario Auditore]]</ref>

Giovanni also eventually revealed his true nature as an Assassin to Lorenzo, and undertook several missions for him behind the backs of his own children. In 1476, Giovanni tracked down [[Rodrigo Borgia]], [[Grand Master]] of the Templar Order, in a Florentine alleyway.<ref name="Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

Although Giovanni managed to eliminate two of his [[Guards|bodyguards]], and incapacitate the third, Rodrigo escaped. The Assassin handed the third guard over to [[Uberto Alberti]], the Gonfaloniere of justice, for questioning.<ref name="Lineage" />

===Pursuing Rodrigo Borgia===
Through torture, the bodyguard revealed that [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], the Duke of [[Milan]] was to be [[Assassination of Galeazzo Maria Sforza|assassinated]] by the Templars, and Giovanni was quickly sent to prevent this. Though he arrived too late to save the Duke, Giovanni was able to eliminate some of his murderers, while the Duke’s bodyguards killed the rest.<ref name="Lineage" />

[[File:Screen shot 2.1.png|thumb|250px|right|Giovanni in Venice.]]
With all the assassins dead, Giovanni searched the corpse of [[Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani]], and found a pouch of coins stamped with the winged lion of [[Venice]]. Recognizing the seal, he immediately set off for the city.<ref name="Lineage" />

Arriving in Venice, Giovanni infiltrated the [[Basilica di San Marco]], and eavesdropped on a group of men conversing in a nearby room. [[Marco Barbarigo|The]] [[Silvio Barbarigo|two]] men then dispatched a courier, with a message for their master in [[Rome]].<ref name="Lineage" />

Giovanni chose to pursue the courier, before finally confronting him in a secluded area. After a lengthy battle, he overpowered and pinned down the courier, his [[hidden blade]] to the man's throat. Refusing to answer his questions, the courier impaled himself on the blade, leaving Giovanni frustrated, albeit with a letter sealed with the crest of the [[House of Barbarigo]]. Giovanni returned to Florence, and presented the letter to Lorenzo, although they found that it was encoded.<ref name="Lineage" />

[[File:Screen shot 2.12.png|250px|left|thumb|Giovanni speaking with Lorenzo before leaving for Rome.]]
That night, Giovanni was summoned to meet with Lorenzo and Uberto. Before leaving, Maria reminded her husband that their son, Ezio, who was watching them from behind a nearby haystack, was becoming suspicious of his banker father having to leave [[Palazzo Auditore|their home]] at night so often. Giovanni promised that he would speak with him soon, and then left.<ref name="Lineage" />

Arriving at the meeting, Uberto falsely claimed that Father [[Antonio Maffei]] had been unable to decrypt the letter, thus, the only course of action was for Giovanni to deliver the letter himself. Giovanni agreed, and headed for Rome with a copy of the letter in hand.<ref name="Lineage" />

In Rome, he delivered the letter, and followed it until it reached the hands of Rodrigo Borgia. Giovanni followed Rodrigo into [[Basilica di San Pietro]], where the two finally exchanged words. Rodrigo remarked his respect for the Assassin's skills, and offered him the chance to join the Templar Order, and live to see the "[[New World Order|new world]]."<ref name="Lineage"/>

[[File:Giovanni's fight.jpg|thumb|250px|Giovanni defending himself from the ambush.]]
Giovanni refused, and was subsequently attacked by a number of Rodrigo's henchmen. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he prevailed, although a [[Throwing knives|knife thrown]] by Rodrigo wounded him gravely, and allowed the Templar the opportunity to escape.<ref name="Lineage" />

Giovanni returned home, where his wife tended to his wound. He confessed to her that he feared the assassination of the Duke of Milan had only been the beginning of a much [[Pazzi Conspiracy|wider conspiracy]]. Before he could go on however, the two were interrupted by their son Federico, who warned that Father Maffei had arrived with armed guards.<ref name="Lineage" />

Asking his son to provide him cover, Giovanni slipped out of the palazzo through a secret passage within the fireplace.<ref name="Lineage" />

===Betrayal and execution===
{{Quote|You are the traitor, Uberto - and one of them! You may take our lives this day, but we will have yours in return, I swear! We will-|Giovanni's final words.|Assassin's Creed II}}

[[File:Intro Uberto v.png|thumb|250px|right|Giovanni introducing Uberto to Ezio on the day of the betrayal.]]
At some point after this, Giovanni found evidence suggesting [[Francesco de' Pazzi]] had committed murder, and he thus had Uberto Alberti arrest him. As a result, Francesco's son [[Vieri de' Pazzi|Vieri]] developed an intense rivalry with Ezio Auditore.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1476, following a brawl the two had on the [[Ponte Vecchio]], Giovanni scolded his son for his behavior, although he noted that it reminded him of himself when he was younger. He then tasked Ezio with delivering a letter to Lorenzo, but was surprised to learn that Lorenzo had left the city for a short while. Undeterred, Giovanni had Ezio deliver several more letters, as well as pick up a letter from a [[Pigeon coops|pigeon coop]] near the [[Piazza della Signoria]].<ref name="AC2"/>

While his son was away, however, armed guards sent by Uberto suddenly invaded the Palazzo Auditore. Giovanni and his two other sons were arrested, and taken to be imprisoned in the tower of the Piazza della Signoria.<ref name="AC2"/>

Before long, Ezio had managed to climb the clock tower, where Giovanni told him to empty his chest in the room behind the fireplace, and retrieve the evidence exonerating him and his family. Ezio did so, and delivered the evidence to Uberto that night.<ref name="AC2"/>

[[File:LMS 1 v.png|thumb|left|250px|Giovanni and his sons at the execution.]]
The next day however, Giovanni was shocked to find Uberto and Rodrigo Borgia together, with Uberto denying ever receiving any evidence. Giovanni and his sons were then sentenced to death on the grounds of treason. A horrified Ezio, who was watching from below, cried out that Uberto was lying, but was unable to prevent his father's hanging.<ref name="AC2"/>

Hours later, Giovanni's corpse was to be disposed of in the Arno, though Ezio was able to retrieve his, Federico's, and Petruccio's bodies, and give them a proper funeral.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

==Legacy==
{{quote|My dear sons, dark skies are rising over Florence and time is running low. The enemy is closer than I thought. Now, the final battle is about to unfold.
[[File:Heirloom 2 v.png|thumb|250px|right|Ezio retrieving Giovanni's Assassin equipment.]]
Despite his death, Giovanni's actions would have lasting consequences for his surviving family members, particularly his son, Ezio Auditore.<ref name="AC2"/>

Having prepared for a turn of events similar to what ultimately happened, Giovanni had arranged for his live-in servant [[Annetta]] to take his wife and daughter to [[Brothels#La Rosa Colta|her sister's establishment]], where they would be safe. There, Annetta's sister [[Paola]], a [[Courtesans|courtesan]] Giovanni had previously represented in court, and introduced into the Assassin's Order, provided Ezio with some basic training in [[blend]]ing, and gave him the skills necessary to execute his revenge on Uberto Alberti before he left the city.<ref name="AC2"/>

When Ezio arrived in Monteriggioni, his uncle Mario was shocked to discover that his brother had never told Ezio of his Assassin heritage, or that Giovanni himself had indeed been an Assassin. Despite this, Ezio soon vowed to take up his fathers work, which included locating what remained of the [[Codex]], and to avenge his death with the blood of Rodrigo Borgia and his Templar allies.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1510, Ezio discovered a letter written by Giovanni in 1458, referencing [[Altaïr's library]], setting in motion Ezio's search for knowledge, and journey to [[Masyaf]].<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>
Giovanni was trained from birth in the Assassin ways, alongside his brother Mario. Despite this mutual upbringing, the two parted ways later on due to a philosophical divide over how to live their lives.<ref name="AC2"/>

Giovanni, who had been tutored in banking, preferred to live a calmer life, whereas Mario wished for more action. This difference eventually led to the two brothers losing touch with one another; to such a degree that upon his arrival in Monteriggioni in 1476, Ezio Auditore was unaware who exactly his uncle was.<ref name="AC2"/>

The divide also affected how Giovanni brought up his children, with none of them explicitly knowing of their heritage; however, although his children were unaware of his true nature, Giovanni did allow others to know of it, trusting in their secrecy. Among these were many of Giovanni's contacts within the [[mercenaries]], courtesans, and [[thieves]] guilds, who knew the Assassin by name, suggesting a certain degree of mutual-trust between them.<ref name="AC2"/>

Despite never telling his children of their heritage, Giovanni did work to prepare them for life as an Assassin. By the time of his death, he had already begun preparing his eldest son, Federico, in the Assassin ways, and was preparing to begin training Ezio as well. A strict father, Giovanni nonetheless showed great affection for his children, and saw a younger version of himself in their antics at times.<ref name="AC2"/>

Customarily armed with his hidden blade, [[Swords and Maces|sword]], [[Short blades|short blade]], and two throwing knives, Giovanni was a skilled warrior, and proved able to hold his own against multiple opponents in combat. He was also a competent [[Freerunning|free runner]], much like his sons, and would often use the skill when shadowing a target.<ref name="AC2"/>

==Trivia==
*Giovanni knew about Ezio's [[Eagle Vision]], although it is unknown if he too possessed the skill.
*Giovanni leaves his Assassin outfit behind for Ezio to find; however, in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]'', it lacks the characteristic eagle's beak on the hood, as well as several other details.
*The sword Giovanni left behind for Ezio is the [[Common Sword|common sword]], but in the cutscene where Giovanni is killed, it is replaced by an old [[Syrian sword]].
*Giovanni died at the age of forty, the same age Ezio turned when he confronted Rodrigo Borgia in Rome.
*In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Renaissance]]'', Giovanni is the last member of the Auditore family to be hanged. He calls Uberto a traitor and that their deaths will be avenged, among other things, before walking towards the gallows and meeting his fate. In ''Assassin's Creed II'', he is killed before he can finish speaking.
*The hidden blade bracer Giovanni used and passed on to Ezio was replaced in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' after the [[Fall of Monteriggioni]], and is not seen subsequently. However, years later, [[Desmond Miles]] receives a bracer identical to it in modern times.
