The '''Tunguska explosion''' was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, [[Russia]], at about 7:14 a.m. on June 30<sup>th</sup> 1908. It was caused by Nikola Tesla, working with the [[Assassins]], who tried to destroy the [[The Staff|Staff of Eden]] as a strike against the [[Templars]].

==Prelude==
In 1905, the Templar [[Grigori Rasputin]] came into possession of [[the Staff]] of Tsar [[Nicholas II of Russia|Nicholas II]], a Piece of Eden. In the summer of 1908, members of the Assassin Order contacted Tesla, offering a chance to get back at the Templars.<ref name="glyph16">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]'' - [[Glyphs|Glyph]] #16</ref> Using his mastery of electricity and the [[wikipedia:Wardenclyffe Tower|Wardenclyffe Tower]], Tesla broadcast destruction into the facility, creating one of the largest explosions in history (more than 2,000 kilometers of forest were flattened and it is estimated that the explosion had a force of more than 30 megatons of TNT{{Fact}}). The explosion destroyed the Staff and left only one of the three assassins on the mission, [[Nikolai Orelov]], alive. Orelov later returned to [[Anna]], barely alive, muttering that the Staff was destroyed.<ref name="theFall"/> The Templars, however, would not discover the truth behind the explosion until 2012.<ref name="ac1Mail"/>
