In transit, he managed to break free when the Templars were attacked by Assassins sent by [[Ah Tabai]], but was chased down by Kenway and escorted to Torres' estate. He was moved later that same day, but escaped soon after and took to the sea.

When Kenway found Roberts hiding in the African jungle in 1719, he struck a deal with the Sage to free his imprisoned crew in exchange for Roberts leading him to the [[First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]. Kenway killed the Templars in Príncipe, freed the crew, and recaptured the ''Princess''. Roberts gave a speech to his crew declaring his intentions to sail as a pirate, and the two captains returned to the West Indies.

In the following months, Roberts made a name for himself by taking ships and making a fortune. He called himself "Black Bart" and kept his crew to high standards with an [[Pirate code of Bartholomew Roberts|eleven-part creed]]; it discouraged gambling on the ship, required the men to keep their equipment in good working order, and provided that pirates should live their lives as fully as possible and die before they became weak and old, vulnerable to having their power stripped from them: a philosophy he summed up with the words "a merry life and a short one."

Roberts and Kenway met again off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, where they infiltrated a Portuguese camp to steal First Civilization [[Blood vials|crystal vials]] that had been imbued with the blood of both pirates and Templars alike. After completing the heist and commandeering the Portuguese flagship, ''Nosso Senhor da Compreensão'', Roberts renamed her to the ''[[Royal Fortune]]''. Kenway killed [[Benjamin Hornigold]] to ensure the pirates were not followed before meeting Roberts again at [[Long Bay]], on the northern shore of [[Jamaica]]. The two went ashore with four of Roberts's crew in search of the Observatory.

Edward cleared the jungle of the protective [[Guardians]] while Roberts and his crew followed until they reached the Observatory's door. Upon opening it with an incantation, Roberts suddenly shot his four crewmen dead, telling Kenway he did it to save them from the insanity that was sure to follow if they entered the building. However, he believed that Edward could handle the secrets stored within, and instructed him to take up the case of blood vials before they made their way inside.

Roberts informed Kenway of his past as a Sage and his new life as a pirate, including his pirate's creed, as they made their way deeper into the Observatory. He commented on the complex being in much worse condition than what it had been when he last saw it eighty millennia ago, although he still knew how to deactivate the building's security measures once inside.

In the Observatory's antechamber, Roberts showed Kenway exactly what its purpose was, using the blood vials they had taken from the Portuguese and inserting them into a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] set into the centerpiece of a golden armillary sphere. Soon, the machine began to operate, projecting the vision and hearing of the individual whose blood was in the vial - a near perfect method of spying on anyone in the world; this was demonstrated as both Roberts and Kenway surveyed through the eyes and ears of [[Jack Rackham]] and Woodes Rogers.

Although Kenway agreed with Roberts that the Observatory would be too powerful for the Templars to have control of, Roberts had a different plan on how to stop them - by removing the skull, rendering the Observatory inoperable. He then kicked Edward over a ledge and into the water below, remarking that there was no part of his creed that forbade betrayal.

Roberts returned to the shore, but was surprised to see a severely wounded Kenway struggling across the beach. After a brief fight, Kenway collapsed; the Sage commented that it would be more profitable to claim the bounty on Kenway's head than to kill him, and turned him over to the British authorities.

Over the next two years Roberts captured hundreds of ships, earning the attention of both the British and [[Spanish Navy|Spanish navies]] as well as the Templars; he was forced to retreat to Príncipe, where he was found by Kenway. ==Biography==
===Early military career===
Rogers joined the [[Royal Navy]] in his twenties and rose through the ranks to a Captain. He also inherited his father's shipping company and earned a fortune. Marrying a woman, he would produce a son and two daughters.

However, he lost great amounts of money to the French, which convinced Rogers to travel to the New World to become a privateer. In 1709, he would rescue a marooned sailor which would inspire the book ''Robinson Crusoe''.

According to soldiers stationed in [[Kingston]], barbados, it was during this period of time that his ship entered conflict with the [[Spanish Navy]] in a ferocious multi-day battle, during which Rogers was shot through the right cheek; however, he was reported to have kept on commanding his men until he was wounded by a wooden shard becoming lodged in his foot the following day. The latter wound healed, but the facial damage left a terrible scar that would never go away.

Rogers would later begin to write and publish his memoirs which had great success and earned him back his fortune. However, the death of his son and estrangement from his wife left him bitter. This was worsened when his former crew charged him for unfairly distribuiting goods during his career as a privateer.

In 1713 and 1714, Rogers had been stationed in [[Madagascar]], where he parlayed with the local pirates, giving them the same ultimatum he later employed in the West Indies: accept the King's pardon and return to England penniless, but free; or to be hung by the neck until dead. He spent eighteen months around the African island until the pirates had been dealt with, at which time he then headed for the Caribbean.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

===Induction into the Templar Order===
In July of 1715, Rogers and the other Templars in [[Havana]] were expecting the arrival of [[Duncan Walpole]], a turncoat [[Assassins|Assassin]], who was to deliver a [[Blood vials|blood vial]] of a [[Sages|Sage]], and maps of Assassin encampments throughout the West Indies. They were unaware however, that Duncan was killed by a [[Piracy|pirate]] named [[Edward Kenway]], who took on Duncan's identity to deliver the cargo and claim the reward for himself.

Upon meeting Edward, Rogers remarked that he didn't resemble the man that Rogers' wife described, before introducing him to [[Julien du Casse]], a [[France|French]] [[Firearms|arms dealer]] and a fellow Templar. Afterwards, they met with the [[Grand Master]] and governor, [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]], and discussed their plans to locate a [[First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]. Torres sent Edward and Rogers down to the docks to collect [[Bartholomew Roberts]], a Sage who could lead them to the Observatory.

Upon arrival, Rogers heard [[Stede Bonnet]] call Edward by his real name and questioned him about it. Edward claimed that he gave Bonnet a false name out of caution, allaying Rogers' suspicion. They continued down to the docks, and collected Roberts, before fending off an Assassin ambush. In 1718, Rogers returned to the Caribbean, having been appointed the governor of the Bahamas, to enforce British rule in [[Nassau]]. He offered pardon to the pirate leaders, [[Edward Thatch]], [[Benjamin Hornigold]] and [[Charles Vane]], as well as ordering a blockade of Nassau by the Royal Navy. However, Edward Kenway and Charles Vane escaped Nassau after killing Rogers's military associate, Commodore [[Peter Chamberlaine]], who had intended to disregard Rogers' orders and sink every pirate vessel at Nassau.

In 1719, Rogers and Hornigold - the only one of the three pirate leaders to accept the pardon - went to Kingston in search of Roberts, who had escaped custody during Rogers' absence. A member of the Royal African Navy told them that Roberts' ship, the ''[[Princess]]'', was due to arrive soon. The two then met up with Torres and informed him of these developments. Hornigold had already sent [[Josiah Burgess]] and [[John Cockram]] to [[Príncipe]] in search of Roberts. He then spotted the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' and realized that Edward was following them. As the men observed the sentencing of [[Mary Read]] and [[Anne Bonny]], Rogers and Torres made what Edward perceived as veiled threats towards his [[Caroline Scott-Kenway|estranged wife]].

They offered Kenway a reprieve from imprisonment and likely execution in exchange for leading them to the Observatory, with Torres warning Kenway that Rogers could only block the British from executing him for a certain time. However, Edward was freed by the Assassins before the Templars could acquire the information they wanted from him.

In 1721, Edward traveled back to Kingston with the intention of confronting and killing Rogers. Impersonating an [[Italy|Italian]] diplomat, [[Ruggiero Ferraro]], Edward slipped into a party being held to celebrate the end of Rogers' tenure as Governor of the Bahamas and his recall to [[London]], a decision with which the man was deeply displeased about.

Positioning himself, Edward struck as Rogers passed him. Interrogating the injured Rogers, Edward confronted him about the Templars' plans for the Observatory and demanded information regarding Bartholomew Roberts' location, to stop the pirate misusing that power. Amused that Edward would help the Templars after trying to kill him, Rogers informed him of Roberts having been sighted on Príncipe, before apparently succumbing to his injuries.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

Having survived Edward's attempt on his life, Woodes returned to England, bankrupt and humiliated, but still dangerous in the eyes of the Assassins.<ref name="AC4"/>

Eventually, for his continued trading in slaves and his hot temper, Woodes was expelled from the Templar Order and, by 1723, languished in a debtor's prison.<ref name="ACBF">[[Assassin's Creed: Black Flag (novel)|''Assassin's Creed: Black Flag'' novel]]</ref> Eventually however, Woodes was released from prison and began to rebuild his reputation, helping to abolish the last remaining remnants of piracy in the West Indies.

Rogers died in 1731, in the city of Nassau, during his second term as Governor.<ref name="AC4"/>
