During the Roman era, the Templars went under the alias "[[SPQR|Senatus Populusque Romanus]]", ruling the [[Roman Empire]]. However, their rule was continually thwarted by the Assassin Order. A notable example of this was the plot against [[Gaius Julius Caesar]], who was appointed as a dictator for life. Forty Assassins, most notably [[Marcus Junius Brutus]] and [[Gaius Cassius Longinus]], had infiltrated Caesar's inner circle as senators. They actually planned to assassinate Caesar, a plan which they successfully executed on 15 March 44 BC.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/> Additionally, on 24 January 41, the Assassin [[Leonius]] stabbed [[Caligula]] with a dagger.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

====Formation as a Knightly Order====
During the Middle Ages, the Templars removed themselves from the underground and founded themselves as a Knightly Order, the Knights Templar, or just "Templars" for short.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> It would become the label that both they and their Assassin enemies would use to identify the Order from that point on.

In the 1129 Council of Troyes, the Order was officially recognized by the church, and in 1139, Pope Innocent II granted them diplomatic immunity in all provinces and territories and exemption from taxes. This allowed the faction to grow in numbers, strength and wealth quickly, and as they became a larger force, their responsibilities increased accordingly: the Order's many members were prominent figures in the second crusade.

In 1191, after the theft of the [[Sixth Apple|Apple of Eden]] by the Assassins [[Malik A-Sayf]] and [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of that year, ten Templar leaders from both [[Crusaders|Crusader]] and [[Saracens|Saracen]] backgrounds fell to the blades of the notorious Assassin, Altaïr, who was serving penance for breaking the three tenets during the theft. The deaths included not only the [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Grand Master]] [[Robert de Sable]], but also [[Al Mualim]], [[Grand Master of the Assassin Order|leader]] of the [[Assassins]] in [[Syria]] and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

With their leadership effectively wiped out by a single Assassin, the Brotherhood retreated to the island of [[Cyprus]] under the command of a new Grand Master, [[Armand Bouchart]]. By the late 15th Century, the Templars had regained a position of strength on the world stage, spreading deep into the Church and nobility of [[Italy]]. Under the command of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> Targeting [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], the de facto ruler of [[Florence]], the Templars found themselves confronted by the Assassin [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni Auditore]], who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following two near fatal encounters with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]] and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]] – for the crimes of high treason against the city of Florence, having corrupted the city official [[Uberto Alberti]]. Utilizing the [[House of Barbarigo|Barbarigo family]], the Templars assumed control of Venice briefly in 1486, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the Piece of Eden from [[Cyprus]]. Two years later, in 1488, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Rodrigo, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Templars approached the [[House of Orsi|Orsi brothers]] – [[Ludovico Orsi|Ludovico]] and [[Checco Orsi|Checco]] – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar [[Girolamo Riario]] – [[Caterina Sforza]]. Invading [[Forlì]], the Orsi brothers demanded the map, and the Apple in exchange for the lives of Sforza's children. The brothers were rebuked, and assaulted the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]]. Despite the loss of the Apple, [[Rodrigo Borgia]] was ultimately unfazed, and in 1492 he became [[Wikipedia:Pope Alexander VI|Pope Alexander VI]] in order to gain access to the [[The Staff|Papal staff]], another of the Pieces of Eden, and in turn the devotional dominion of the church. In 1499, Rodrigo was confronted again by the Assassin Ezio within the [[Capella Sistina|Sistine Chapel]], and the end result once more favored Ezio.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> The Templar's defeat however, was not permanent, as Rodrigo's son [[Cesare Borgia|Cesare]] [[Fall of Monteriggioni|besieged]] [[Monteriggioni]] to regain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Facing setback after setback due to harassment from the Roman Assassins led by Ezio Auditore, the impatient Cesare grew tired of his father's resistance to give him more power and money, and after becoming aware about his father's intentions to kill him, he took what remained of the poisoned apple he had taken a bite out of and shoved it into Rodrigo's mouth, forcing him to swallow the same toxin that was in his system, before demanding the location of the Apple of Eden out of his sister [[Lucrezia Borgia|Lucrezia]]. After being weakened by the [[cantarella]] from the poisoned fruit, Cesare was later imprisoned by [[Julius II|Pope Julius II]] under the charges of murder, betrayal and incest, but he escaped with help from his loyal friend [[Micheletto Corella|Micheletto]]. Ezio continued to chase Cesare down until finally learning his location by looking into the Apple of Eden. Cesare was ultimately thrown off from the walls of [[Viana Castle|Viana's Castle]] during the Siege of Viana after a brutal fight with Ezio, ending the dominance of the Templars in Italy.

Infiltrating and establishing countless corporate entities, by the 20th Century the Templars had positioned themselves within several world-defining positions, controlling whole nations and improving the planet's technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stifle world progress however; [[Adolf Hitler]] used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started [[World War II|a world-wide conflict]]. He was "fought" by his Templar contemporaries [[Winston Churchill]], [[Joseph Stalin]], and [[Franklin D. Roosevelt]], who under the guise of the Allied nations ultimately won the conflict, despite having planned the war all along, and orchestrating the peace that would follow.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

By the early 21st Century, the Templar fronted [[Abstergo Industries]] had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion,<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> believing it to be "too large" a company.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> Among the nations whose economic and political affairs which Templars interfered included Chile, Argentina, and Iran.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

During this time, the Templars had access to a number of Pieces of Eden, however, the actions of the Assassins, coupled with the [[DIA satellite accident]] forced the Templars into stepping up the [[Animus]]-project, in the hope of finding another Piece capable of controlling the minds of humanity. By September of 2012, sixteen [[Animus' Subjects|test subjects]] had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – [[Desmond Miles]], a descendant of both [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Upon being captured by Abstergo, and for seven days, Desmond Miles was forced to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory that was valuable to Abstergo registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the information they had long sought in hand, the Templars set about gathering the remaining Pieces to ensure "absolute peace", although they soon found themselves in a race against the Assassin Order to obtain the Pieces first.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on [[Cryptic Messages|December 21, 2012]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

The existence of the Templars became known to the public in 1129, when its military order was founded to counter the greatly increasing threat against the Holy Land by the [[Saracens]], and to protect the city of [[Jerusalem]].<ref name=HC>The History Channel, ''Decoding the Past: The Templar Code'', 7 November 2005, video documentary written by Marcy Marzuni</ref> Over time, the Templars began to believe it within their power to unite the world in peace.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

Their system of belief changed greatly upon the discovery of the [[Pieces of Eden]]; they began to speculate that God was a myth and this led the Order to become atheistic, although they publicly maintained the pretense of following the Christian ways so as to not lose the support of the Church.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Realizing the power that the Pieces of Eden held over man, the Templars began to seek out the artifacts. By their reasoning, with no afterlife or ultimate punishment or reward after death, there was no reason to oblige notions of morality or ethics: the end always justified the means, no matter how heinous those means were. They thought that only this life was important, rather than preparing for a thought-to-be nonexistent next life. With so many lower class people kept in line by the promise of an afterlife, and so many upper class men blissfully ignoring such ideals, the Templars vowed to make a better world; one of lasting peace, no matter what the cost.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

As time progressed, the Templars interest in the Pieces of Eden became more about seeking the power and domination that the artifacts offered. ''Ordre du Temple'' in French, the Knights Templar are amongst the most famous of the Western Christian military orders involved in the war. They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France manipulated Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar, to serve his own agenda. The Order's Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the [[Knights Hospitalier]]. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ. Recently, a document discovered in the Secret Vatican Archives, shows that Clement V wanted to stop the destruction of the Knight Templars.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.

That same night, he along with his brother Federico and father Giovanni were given a proper burial by [[Ezio Auditore]].

He then turned and grabbed the Baron de Valois' [[Pistol|firearm]] from him, a pistol that Ezio's good friend, [[Leonardo da Vinci]], had been forced to fashion for them. Though outnumbered, both Oliverotto and Vitellozzo overpowered them. By 1500, Cesare had Rome under his iron fist as the commander of the Papal army, though he and his father occasionally disagreed on his choices. He used [[Borgia towers]] and their captains to keep control over the five districts of Rome, as he was often away for extended periods of time to oversee the advancement of his army, in a bid to unite all of Italy under his rule.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

During Ezio's infiltration of the [[Castel Sant'Angelo]] in late June 1501, Cesare was seen at the stables conversing with his three generals about their plans, where he told them to play along with his father's ''"tired old men's club,"'' but to remember who they really served. He later shared a romantic moment with his sister, before asking if their father had considered the funds requested by his Banker. In August of 1503, Cesare and his father argued over the former's insatiable lust for power. Rodrigo commented that he had given Cesare all he had, yet his son was never satisfied. Cesare demanded that his father give him the Apple of Eden, but Rodrigo refused. At this point, Lucrezia barged in, crying out to her brother that their father was attempting to poison him with the bowl of apples he had left out. An angry Cesare responded by charging Rodrigo and shoving the poisoned apple he had been eating into his mouth. The [[Cantarella|poison]] did its work, and Rodrigo died within seconds. Cesare then demanded the Apple of Eden's whereabouts from Lucrezia, who confessed under much pressure. Ezio beat Cesare to the [[Basilica di San Pietro]], the Apple's location, and retrieved the [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]] before him.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Cesare's rule met a downward spiral from there. As a final stab from his father, Cesare had consumed enough of the poison to leave him weak for months. While he recovered, Ezio and the other Assassins used the Apple to dwindle his remaining forces, while the [[Vatican]] meanwhile fully rejected Cesare's request for support, seeing the Borgia's money as "tainted."<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Cesare sent Micheletto to retrieve his armies from the battlefield in order to reclaim Rome, however, he was confronted by the highest-ranking Assassins as he awaited his return. As the last of his followers fell, [[Fabio Orsini]] arrived with the Papal Guard and a warrant for Cesare's arrest by the order of [[Julius II|Pope Julius II]]. Subsequently following his arrest, Cesare was imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo. However, he was able to escape the prison and flee. Though Cesare was later recaptured, Pope Julius II concluded that Cesare needed to be transferred to a more secure prison, and had the Templar moved to the [[Castillo de la Mota]], [[Wikipedia:Aragon|Aragon]], in Spain. Though Ezio had intended to kill Cesare despite his imprisonment, he was unaware of where Cesare had been transferred. He, Machiavelli, and Leonardo began tracking him down, while Micheletto, who had evaded imprisonment and remained loyal to Cesare, planned for his master's escape.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel"/>

In 1506, Micheletto bribed a prison guard at the Castillo. Having had rope smuggled in for him, Cesare climbed down from his window and sneaked past the main gate in his stolen guard uniform. Meeting with Micheletto, he was informed that Ezio was currently tracking him, though he said nothing on the matter. Micheletto then told his master that he had made arrangements in [[Valencia]]. With this, Cesare made his escape, and rode to Valencia with Micheletto.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel"/>

Following his escape, Cesare began to rebuild his forces in Valencia, with men volunteering to enter his service and setting up a large military encampment. Whilst Cesare was raising a small army, he spent most of his time coordinating battle tactics at the [[Lone Wolf Inn]]. Ezio and Machiavelli soon discovered this, however, and were able to destroy the encampment and twelve ships with Leonardo's [[hand-held bomb]]s.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel"/>

Later, they spied on him from the roof the Lone Wolf. Cesare blamed Micheletto for the Assassins' attack, and insulted him as a dog, remarking that he should find somewhere to die. During his tirade against Micheletto, Cesare claimed that he would cross the borders and join his brother-in-law, King [[John III of Navarre]] to seek his aid.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel"/>

Though Micheletto begged Cesare, and reminded him of his loyal service, Cesare continued to insult him. However, this rebounded on Cesare, as Micheletto, realizing how much his service meant to his ungrateful master, attempted to murder Cesare by strangling him. However, Cesare was able to shove Micheletto away and shoot him in the head, killing him. Ezio and Machiavelli, who had watched the scene unfold, made a noise from above. Cesare, who heard this, fired his rifle and wounded Machiavelli.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel"/>

In March of 1507, Cesare tried to regain his lost honor by commandeering John III's vast army during the [[Siege of Viana|Siege]] of [[Viana]], after which, should he be victorious, he would regain the support of the French. However, unbeknownst to him, Ezio caught wind of Cesare's involvement in the battle and set out for Viana.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

During the siege, Ezio located and charged Cesare on the battlefield, though Cesare held him back just long enough to dodge his [[Hidden Blade|hidden blade]] and flee. Ezio's pursuit was delayed by several cannonball impacts that stunned him, and incapacitated the other soldiers in the area.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Cesare was born into the Templar Order and, like many of his other siblings, was raised by his father into his personal weapon. Cesare maintained an incestuous relationship with his sister, Lucrezia Borgia and promised her that she would be his queen when he ruled Italy. *When replaying the memory in Viana, after the cutscene in which Ezio drops Cesare from the castle walls, his body can be seen when looking down from the battlements before the memory fades out.

==Biography==
===Early life and carreer===
Fabio Orsini was born in 1476 or 1477, the son of Paolo Orsini. He was trained in the art of battle at an early age, already participating in a battle to help the Sienese at Montepulciano.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

===Affiliations with the Borgia===
Around three years after the battle at Montepulciano, he joined his cousin [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]] in a battle against the Savelli family. Following the battle, he married Jeronima Borgia, who was the cousin of Papal Commander [[Cesare Borgia]]. He supported his in-law family for some time, until he freed an imprisoned friend from the Tor di Nona. He had to continue serving the [[Borgia]] against his will, however, as Cesare managed to bring the Orsini family to their knees.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

===Later life===
In 1500, Fabio lent an [[Tiber Island|old storehouse]] to the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]], hoping that it would aid them in their war against the Borgia. He was also aware of the fact that his cousin Bartolomeo was amongst their numbers, as he had heard many stories about Bartolomeo's fellow Assassin [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

Later, Fabio attacked [[Micheletto Corella]]'s army after Cesare had Fabio's father Paolo killed. He was unable to defeat Micheletto however and lost his status. He then became an outlaw, raiding the countryside, and a warrant for his arrest was placed on him by [[Rodrigo Borgia|Pope Alexander VI]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

After the death of Pope Alexander VI and his son Cesare became disfavored, Fabio entered [[wikipedia:Pope Julius II|Pope Julius II]]'s service. He led the Papal armies to arrest Cesare for murder, betrayal and incest.(what a shame!)<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

In late 1503, he participated in the battle of Garigliano alongside Bartolomeo. However, Fabio died in 1504 of a head wound he received during the battle.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />
