The Jackdaw was a brig captained by the pirate and later Assassin Edward Kenway, which he obtained with the help of Adéwalé, during his time in the West Indies. Before Kenway's captaincy, the ship was a part of a Spanish Treasure Fleet and named El Dorado. Upon securing it, Kenway renamed the vessel Jackdaw, after the bird of the same name.

History
Procurement
After an imprisoned Edward Kenway was placed on a ship in the fleet bound for Spain, he met his future quartermaster, Adéwalé, who helped free Edward from their leg irons and assisted him in incapacitating the guards until the pirate retrieved his equipment. Following this, the pair secured a crew by freeing other prisoners from their Spanish captors, before they set their sights on a brig in the fleet, El Dorado, and made their way to relinquish it. Subsequently, Kenway used the pirates he freed to help sail the ship from the fleet under the cover of a severe storm, successfully escaping the natural disaster while the remaining ships were sunk. Kenway then renamed the ship the Jackdaw, after a small, swift bird from his home of Wales.

Piracy
{{Dialogue|Edward|It's a shaky feeling, sailing around with this much stolen cargo.|Hornigold|Get used to it. The Jackdaws first major act of piracy took place off of the coast of Nassau in 1715, when Captain Benjamin Hornigold showed Kenway how to successfully take a ship. It was after this voyage that the brig was given its very own black flag.

Soon after, it was used to transport Kenway to Cat Island to plunder a plantation, and eventually followed a Spanish Man O' War, El Arca del Maestro, through the Bahamas to its moorings at Great Inagua. Kenway then infiltrated the island, killed the French Templar Julien du Casse and took both the ship and the island. It was here that he would establish his own base of operations, and the Jackdaw could often be found moored at the docks in the cove.

The Jackdaw traveled across the West Indies Sea to the ancient city of Tulum, home of the Assassins, where the crew members were soon taken prisoner by Laurens Prins. Kenway freed his crew and they returned to sea. Soon after, the ship took its first fort, located at Punta Guarico, and made sail for Kingston. After Kenway killed Prins, the ship returned to Nassau.

However, the pirate city was suffering from disease, prompting Kenway to outfit the Jackdaw with a diving bell in search for medicines. When he came up empty, he followed his fellow pirate Edward Thatch to Charles-Towne to secure medicines before returning again to Nassau. After the city was blockaded by the British, the Jackdaw, along with Charles Vane's ship, the Ranger, was able to escape and fled to Great Inagua. There, he made plans to find Thatch again and set sail for Ocracoke. When the pirates were ambushed by the Royal Navy, the Jackdaw was the only vessel to escape.

The Jackdaw and the Ranger met up again off the coast of Jamaica, in pursuit of a ship that would lead them to Bartholomew Roberts. However, Vane's associate Jack Rackham had engineered a mutiny, taking the Jackdaw and leaving Kenway and Vane marooned on Isla Providencia.

Kenway managed to make his way back to Great Inagua, where Adéwalé and Mary Read had taken the Jackdaw from Rackam. Kenway soon set sail again, returning to Kingston before continuing on to Principe, where Roberts had gone into hiding. After freeing Roberts, he followed him to the coast of Mexico, where the two infiltrated and battled a Portuguese fleet before sailing for the Observatory, Kenway's ultimate goal.

Along the way, the Jackdaw chased Hornigold's ship through a fog bank before Kenway assassinated his former friend, clearing the way to the Observatory. When Roberts betrayed Edward deep inside the complex, Adéwalé and the crew quickly fled. It would be almost a year before Kenway would be reunited with his ship in Kingston, although Adéwalé chose not to join his captain, revealing his intentions to join the Assassin Order and suggesting that Edward do the same.
An Assassin ship
Shortly thereafter, the vessel returned again to Tulum, where Edward became an Assassin as well and received his three targets: Woodes Rogers, Torres, and Roberts. The Jackdaws flag was replaced with one bearing an Assassin insignia, and Anne Bonny took Adéwalé's place as quartermaster.

Edward sailed for Kingston to eliminate Rogers. In turn, the Templar revealed Roberts' location in Principe, where the Jackdaw sailed next. In a tremendous battle between the Jackdaw, Roberts' ship Royal Fortune, and a Spanish fleet, Kenway managed to kill Roberts and retrieve the Observatory's Crystal Skull. The ship then carried its captain back to Havana, where Edward discovered Torres was already on his way to the Observatory. The Assassin followed in hot pursuit, making his way through the jungle and the complex before finally killing the Grand Master.

The Jackdaw then made one final trip back to Great Inagua, where Edward finally retired from piracy, deciding to care for his newly discovered daughter Jennifer Scott. In 1722, he sailed his ship one last time across the ocean to London, where he would live for the rest of his life.

It is unknown what happened to the Jackdaw in the intervening years, but at some point prior to 1735, the brig returned to the West Indies and sank off the coast of Hispaniola due to unknown circumstances. Its figurehead was later recovered from the wreckage by Adéwalé.

Schematics
The Jackdaw was 60 meters long from her stern to the tip of her bowsprit, 48.5 meters high, had a width of 11.9 meters, and had twenty-six sails. Accompanying this, the Jackdaw was armed with forty-six Broadside, four Cannons and two swivel guns. Accompanying this, she could hold a sizable number of fire barrels, heated shot and mortar rounds, and was equipped with an iron plated naval ram. At her strongest, the Jackdaw possessed a sizable amount of iron-plating reinforcement across her hull, which provided ample protection in combat against a number of Men O' War. The brig was able to disable and destroy any type of ship, given the proper strategy in battle.

She was also equipped with a diving bell for exploration of various underwater wrecks, as well as a whaling rowboat and harpoons, which allowed Edward to hunt for local sea life. Her masts featured pedal-activated lifts and hooks to allow for both ascent and descent. The Jackdaw also had cleverly placed swinging ropes secured both on deck and in the cross-masts which were used by the crew to swing from one ship to another when boarding.

Notable conflicts
While the Jackdaw did not participate in any major historical battles of the era, she still had more than her fair share of legendary combat. Notable skirmishes, such as the battle which took Blackbeard's life near Ocracoke, and the later conflict off the coast of Príncipe – in which Bartholomew Roberts was killed – were fought on the Jackdaws decks.

The ship was a formidable raider in the Caribbean – it single-handedly outgunned and destroyed all of the naval forts around the Caribbean at one time or another. The Jackdaw also took many ships, from gunboats to Men O' War, including the five legendary ships that roamed the Caribbean Sea: El Impoluto, the twin ships HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign, La Dama Negra, and HMS Prince.

Crew
*Edward Kenway - Captain (30 July 1715 - 23 November 1718, 1719 - 1722)
*Jack Rackham - Captain (23 November 1718 - c. 23 January 1719)
*Adéwalé (until 1721-22) - Quartermaster.
*Anne Bonny (from 1721-22 onward) - Quartermaster.
*Numerous unnamed pirates

Trivia
*Like many other references to the Assassin Order involving avians, a Western Jackdaw is a small, black bird belonging to the crow family. Coincidentally, the color of the bird's feathers themselves could also be a reference to piracy often being symbolized by black.
*Darby McDevitt mentioned the Jackdaws name was also a reference to the fable of the Eagle and the Jackdaw, which is recited during the "Delirium" memory.
*The former name of the ship, El Dorado, is Spanish for "the gilded one; the golden".
*In the captain's cabin, there was a statue of a vulture near the Jackdaws rear window. There was also a bust of an unknown man in the right corner. Other cabin decorations included several flags, lanterns, a desk, and some chairs, along with the miniature model of the ship and the tailor's mannequin.
*The Jackdaw flew a generic pirate flag for most of its time under Kenway's command. After Edward defended the Assassins from a Spanish raid, the flag changed to include the Assassin insignia around the skull.
*At elite level, most of the Jackdaws equipment, including the swivel guns, broadside, and mortars, were plated gold. The elite hull upgrade also included liberal gold and iron plating on the ship's hull and deck.
*After defeating all legendary ships, the Jackdaw gained a charge attack, allowing it to inflict greater damage on an enemy ship.
*Though repeatedly refered to as a ship, the Jackdaw is technically a brig. By the definition of the era, a ship had three masts. The Jackdaw only has two. However, brigs were often called ships by sailors and officers out of respect.

The Aquila was a French naval warship commissioned and constructed during the 18th century. She soon became the flagship of the burgeoning Assassin fleet.

During the American Revolution, the vessel was captained by the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, with Robert Faulkner as his first mate. Under their command, the Aquila helped to capture Continental Army captain and Templar Nicholas Biddle, who had been raiding locations along the coast. The pair also patrolled several trade routes along the Eastern Seaboard and the Caribbean Sea, engaging in multiple privateer contracts.

History
The Aquila was a brig constructed in Brest, France, in the year 1749.

While small in design, the Aquila was a fast ship for its size, capable of twelve knots in good wind, according to Faulkner, making her one of the fastest in her region of service. Armed with heavy cannons and accurate swivel guns, the Aquila had a versatile and powerful arsenal that made her a force to be reckoned with.

In 1754, by which point she had become the flagship of the Assassin fleet, the Assassins spread the word that the Aquila had been destroyed after suffering heavy damage pursuing the Providence, which was transporting the Templar Grand Master Haytham Kenway, through a storm. In reality, she had only sustained minor damage and was soon refitted for combat.

Over the next decade, the Aquila plagued the Templar fleets, earning herself the moniker of "Ghost of the North Seas", an illusion spread both by the ship avoiding major harbors and by the exceptional sailing ability of her acting captain, Robert Faulkner.

Eventually, the Templars uncovered the fact that the Aquila had not been destroyed and, in 1768, three British frigates ambushed the ship, nearly destroying it. Both the Aquila and Faulkner survived and managed to escape to the Davenport Homestead, where they would remain until the arrival of the Assassin Connor, who elected to defray the cost of the vessel's repairs. Coincidentally, he had invited lumberjacks Terry and Godfrey to live on the Homestead, so the Aquila had the resources necessary for repairs.

After six months, Connor and Faulkner found a crew for the Aquila and sailed to Martha's Vineyard in search of cannons and officers. Faulkner recruited some of his old shipmates, David and Richard Clutterbuck, as gunnery officers, and tutored Connor in sailing the Aquila as captain. After practicing to fire the cannons at an old shipwreck, the Aquila saw her first fight in years against a patrol of British gunboats and a frigate.

Following this battle, Connor used the Aquila to defend trade routes along the Colonial seaboard and the Caribbean. The Aquila was called upon to defend a number of trading vessels, such as the Henderson and Independence, securing trade routes for the colonists and reducing the risk of merchants.

Privateers and English frigates were terrorizing the coast, and the Aquilas patrols put her in a premier position to eliminate the threats. Gunboats and frigates were among the privateers' favored ships, though they occasionally had a few larger ships to rival the Aquila, such as the Dartmoor, Saint James, and Prospector.

While these battles were relatively brief, their effects were far-reaching. Civilian traders were affected by the patrols of the Aquila and her crew, as they were less likely to lose goods to the raiders. This meant that prices to trade goods were lowered across the colonies, making the Aquila not only a military force but an indirect economic one as well.

The ship also served as transport for her captain when Connor sought out the hidden treasure of Captain William Kidd and traveled in pursuit of Templars. Often, this meant the Aquila waited offshore while Connor and Faulkner went ashore in a rowboat to explore the maps Peg Leg had given Connor in exchange for trinkets.

These locales varied greatly, from a jungle beach to the frigid north. However, on some occasions, the Aquila was directly used in hunting a Templar. Haytham Kenway and Connor, during their brief armistice, used the Aquila in the hunt for Benjamin Church and the Welcome in the Caribbean Sea, eventually boarding the ship, retrieving her stolen cargo for the Patriots at Valley Forge, and killing her passenger. In the process, the Aquila had decimated the Welcome and her crew, proving to be a resounding victory for her captain.

The Welcome was not her only prey – Nicholas Biddle had been raiding Martha's Vineyard in the USS Randolph. Issues first arose when privateer frigates threatened merchant vessels near the Vineyard, and the Aquila successfully found and defeated their fort headquarters.

When another merchant vessel was threatened, the Randolph was spotted leading the privateers, though she escaped in the cover of a storm. For several years thereafter between 1776 and 1778, Connor and the Aquila hunted Biddle and the Randolph, thought to be the party responsible for inciting the privateers to raid the Vineyard and the ships visiting it.

The ship's hunt was delayed by needing to help La Belladonna, a vessel vital to the war effort, and other constraints on her captain's time. Eventually, however, in 1778, Connor and the Aquila managed to corner the Randolph.

The Aquila proved the hardier ship compared to the larger Randolph; Connor's superior seamanship and the Aquilas firepower allowed her to disable the Randolph, kill her captain, and scuttle her, securing the Vineyard and stopping the Templars from encouraging further attacks. With Biddle out of the way, the seaboard was safe once more for neutral traders to conduct business with the colonies.

When the Battle of Chesapeake Bay began, General Marquis de Lafayette requested the Aquila give support in the battle. The French Admiral de Grasse believed that he would receive a large fleet and experienced captains, but instead he received only the Aquila and her captain Connor.

While irritated at the concept, de Grasse gave Connor two frigates for assistance, the Marsellois and the Saint Espirit, and asked them to engage the encroaching fleet. During the battle, the trio of ships sank several gunboats and at least four English frigates, before the Marsellois was destroyed by an English vessel midway through the battle.

Once all the English frigates had been destroyed, a Man-of-War sailed into the battle and sank the Saint Espirit, before she managed to disable the Aquilas guns. Due to lacking any other means of attack, Connor decided to destroy the Man-of-War by ramming her, getting on board in hand-to-hand combat, and killing her captain. Ultimately proving successful, the battle ended with the French as the victors.

Connor also loaned the Aquila to his apprentices for various contracted missions. The ship was present at the Battle of Gloucester (1775) in 1775 and the Frederica naval action of 1778, and she also aided Caesar Rodney in holding control of the Delaware River.

Alternate timeline
In an alternate timeline created by an Apple of Eden, the Aquila and Faulkner were located in Boston. When George Washington crowned himself the King of the United States, Benjamin Franklin had the ship confiscated.

However, Franklin was eventually freed from Washington's influence by Ratonhnhaké:ton, and suggested acquiring the Aquila to reach Washington's palace in New York. Franklin and the Assassin struck a bargain with Faulkner, having him gather a crew while Ratonhnhaké:ton untied the ship's moorings and assassinated the snipers guarding her. Faulkner's crew stormed the docks and swam to the Aquila, which had gone adrift. Ratonhnhaké:ton held off the soldiers firing on the sailors, and eventually climbed on board with Kanen'tó:kon to sail for New York.

During the approach, the Aquila was attacked by Washington's fleet. Ratonhnhaké:ton took the wheel and destroyed the attackers before taking their flags to sail into the lower bay unimpeded. The Aquila then navigated through the naval mines and launched a surprise attack on the remaining ships.

However, the ship's ammunition was depleted shortly after, with more of the King's ship on their way. Ratonhnhaké:ton ordered everyone to jump overboard as he rammed the Man-of-War in the lower bay, providing distraction for the others, but also destroying the Aquila in the process.

Although relatively well built, even when initially repaired by Connor, the Aquila underwent several major improvements during his captaincy.

In addition to the warship's standard round shot and swivel guns, the Aquila was eventually upgraded to include several more projectile types: chain-shot to destroy a ship's sails, disabling them; grapeshot to target the crew; and heated shot to start fires among the hull.

The Aquila also received improvements in her hull strength via reinforcements, an improved rudder for sharper turns, and the addition of a naval ram. Fully upgraded, the Aquila was armed with 60 main cannons, 30 on each side.

This would have made her equivalent in firepower to a fourth-rate ship of the line, which meant that she would have been a smaller ship of the line but larger than a frigate. Like most fourth-rates, , the Aquila carried her guns on two dedicated gun decks with a few cannons and the swivel guns also present on the weather deck. However, unlike most fourth-rates, which had three masts, the Aquila has only two.

Trivia
*Aquila is Latin for "eagle", and it was a reference to the eagle motif of the Assassins.
**Continuing the eagle theme, the Aquila had an eagle-shaped figurehead.
**"Aquila" is also the name of a Aquila (constellation), with its brightest star known as "Altair," namesake of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.
*In an interview, Mission Director Philippe Bergeron stated that Connor could freeroam the seas with the ship between missions. However, this was not possible in the final version of Assassin's Creed III.
*The Aquila had lifts attached to her central mast, with the pulley handles shaped like Assassin insignias.
*Faulkner stated the Aquilas top speed was 12 knots, but her actual in-game speed is roughly 27 knots at half sail and 31 knots at full sail.
*By the base number of guns the Aquila would be considered a fifth-rate frigate. However, when fully upgraded she would fall into the class of a fourth-rate ship-of-the-line. While technically known as ships of the line, fourth rates rarely participated in lines of battle. This would also mean that she had a crew complement between three and five hundred men.
*The Aquila typically flies the British flag, even during the Battle of the Chesapeake when she fights alongside French ships.
*The Aquila is often refered to as a ship, but since a ship by the definition of the time had three masts, and the Aquila only has two, she is technically a brig, not a ship. Brigs, however, were often called ships out of respect.

Armaments

*By the number of guns the Aquila would be considered a third-rate ship-of-the-line. While not as massive as a first-rate or second-rate, the third-rate ships were considered to be the ideal balance in sailing warships in terms of speed and firepower. This would also mean that she had a crew complement between three and five hundred men.
*The Aquila typically flies the British flag, even during the Battle of the Chesapeake when she fights alongside French ships.

Piracy

The Man O' War (plural: Men O' War), or Galleon, as the class was known in non-English speaking countries, was a class of warship operated by, among others, the British, Spanish and Portuguese navies. "Man O' War" is actually a general term for any sort of naval warship. In Assassin's Creed IV, the term is used to refer to the largest type of warship, called a "ship of the line."

During the early 18th century, the Man O' War was among the most well-armed class of warship in operation throughout the Caribbean. Each ship of the class bore three masts, and was capable of fielding up to fifty guns per side over three decks; on top of this, they were fitted with mortars, chain-shot, heavy shot and fire barrels, and possessed a hardened hull for improved robustness.

However, despite all of these major advantages, Men O' War possessed a major weakness in terms of their speed; as they were very slow, a well-armed, smaller ship could outmaneuver their broadsides and still land hits to destroy them.

Legendary ships
During the early 18th century, there were five "legendary" Men O' War that roamed the four corners of the Caribbean, each with their unique naval warfare styles and construction. Three of them belonged to the Royal Navy while two sailed under the flag of the Spanish Navy.

These five ships were significantly more well-armed and armored than any other Men O' War in the Caribbean, and provided a significantly greater challenge to any would-be attacker. Their distinguishing characteristics made them notorious throughout the Caribbean, and they were feared by servicemen and pirates alike.

Each of these legendary ships was eventually sunk by Edward Kenway's Jackdaw, and their supply of gold, 20,000 reales on average, claimed by the pirate's crew.
Before Kenway's captaincy, the ship was a part of a Spanish Treasure Fleet and named El Dorado.
History

After freeing Roberts, he followed him to the coast of Mexico, where the two infiltrated and battled a Portugese fleet before sailing for the Observatory, Kenway's ultimate goal.

The Jackdaw then made one final trip back to Great Inagua, where Edward finally retired from piracy, deciding to care for his newly-discovered daughter Jennifer Scott.

Schematics
The Jackdaw was 60 meters long, 48.5 meters high, had a width of 11.9 meters, and had twenty-six sails. Accompanying this, the Jackdaw was armed with forty-six Broadside, four Cannons and two swivel guns. Accompanying this, she could hold a sizable number of fire barrels, heated shot and mortar rounds, and was equipped with a iron plated naval ram.

Like most ships of the time and area, her masts featured pedal-activated lifts and hooks to allow for both ascent and descent.

Other cabin decorations included several flags, lanterns, a desk, and some chairs, along with the minature model of the ship and the tailor's mannequin.
*Although numerous references are made in-game to the Jackdaw being a brig, if the player plays the mission "Black Bart's Gambit" and looks at the Jackdaw through the spyglass while sailing the man o' war, they can see the ship's name and level, but the area which typically specifies a ship's type--frigate, brig, etc--is left blank.

After freeing Roberts, he followed him to the coast of Mexico, where the two infiltrated and battled a Portugese fleet before sailing for the Observatory, Kenway's ultimate goal.

The Jackdaw then made one final trip back to Great Inagua, where Edward finally retired from piracy, deciding to care for his newly-discovered daughter Jennifer Scott.

Like most ships of the time and area, her masts featured pedal-activated lifts and hooks to allow for both ascent and descent.

Other cabin decorations included several flags, lanterns, a desk, and some chairs.
*The Jackdaws speed at half sail is roughly 13 knots, at full sail it is roughly 26 knots, and at travel speed it is roughly 52 knots.

The Jackdaws first major act of piracy took place off of the coast of Nassau in 1715, when Captain Benjamin Hornigold showed Kenway how to successfully take a ship. It was after this voyage that the brig was given its very own black flag.

Kenway managed to make his way back to Great Inagua, where Adéwalé and Mary Read had taken the Jackdaw from Rackam. *At half sail the Jackdaw goes roughly 13 knots, which is a realistic speed for her. At full sail, she goes roughly 26 knots, which is close to the Aquila's speed at half sail. At travel speed, the Jackdaw goes roughly 54 knots. (Tested in game)
*While a far more accurate representation of contemporary ships than the Aquila, the Jackdaw still has a few innacuracies. A ship of her size and armament would have carried at least 100 men, but her maximum in-game capacity is 40. She is said to be 60 meters long, but that measurement is taken from her stern to the tip of her bowsprit. By the way ships were usually measured, from the stern to the figurehead, she is roughly 43 meters long, which is still very large for a brig. Her lower studdingsails are triangular, instead of square. Also, her foremast is taller than her mainmast, which would not have been the case for brigs.

Armaments

This would have made her equivalent in firepower to a third-rate ship of the line, which meant that she would have been a smaller ship of the line but larger than a frigate. Most contemporary 60-gun ships carried those guns on only two decks; however, the Aquila carried them on two dedicated gun decks with a few cannons and the swivel guns also present on the weather deck.

(Tested in game)
*The Aquila is actually a fairly innacurate representation of contemporary sailing ships. A ship of her size would have carried three masts, and twice as many sails on each. Also, brigs almost always had both masts ahead of the helm. The Aquila's gun layout would have also made her very unstable.

Armaments

(Tested in game)
*By the number of guns and masts, the Aquila would be considered a third-rate ship-of-the-line.
Before Kenway's captaincy, the ship was a part of a Spanish Treasure Fleet and named El Dorado.

Piracy

After freeing Roberts, he followed him to the coast of Mexico, where the two infiltrated and battled a Portugese fleet before sailing for the Observatory, Kenway's ultimate goal.

The Jackdaw then made one final trip back to Great Inagua, where Edward finally retired from piracy, deciding to care for his newly-discovered daughter Jennifer Scott.

Like most ships of the time and area, her masts featured pedal-activated lifts and hooks to allow for both ascent and descent.

Other cabin decorations included several flags, lanterns, a desk, and some chairs.
*At half sail the Jackdaw goes roughly 13 knots, which is a realistic speed for her. At full sail, she goes roughly 26 knots, which is close to the Aquila's speed at half sail. At travel speed, the Jackdaw goes roughly 54 knots.

Armaments

*By the number of guns and masts, the Aquila would be considered a third-rate ship-of-the-line.
