Garnier was the tenth Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier, a monastic order founded after the First Crusade, who established its first infirmary near the [[Church of the Holy Sepulchre]] in [[Jerusalem]]. At first, the order cared for pilgrims, but soon made sure armed [[guards]] prevented the pilgrims from being harmed. This escorting force was built up dramatically, and became a dominant {{Wiki|Christianity|Christian}} group along with the Knights Templar.<ref name="TSC">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade]]''</ref> Garnier began his service with the order in 1177, as a commander of the hospital in Jerusalem, and was promoted a decade later.

Garnier was exiled from [[France]] for the cruel and inhumane treatment of his patients, who he saw less as people, and more as experiments on whom to try the latest cures. The price of knowledge was never too high for him, even if it had to be paid with another man's blood.<ref name="ACGuide">''[[Assassin's Creed: Official Game Guide]]''</ref> For a time, he was a resident of [[Tyre]], but he quickly returned to his habits of human experimentation, eventually leading to his expulsion from this city as well.<ref name="TSC" /> Since Garnier's family had contributed a significant amount of money to King Richard I's war efforts, he was thereafter harbored and protected in Acre.<ref name="ACGuide" />

In Acre, Garnier managed to buy himself loyal assistants, who allowed him to continue his cruel work. Determined to keep any news of his crimes a secret from his superiors, he closed the hospital to only approved visitors and had patients crippled to keep them from leaving. In time, he came to believe that the patients were nothing more than lost souls in need of aid and that he had a responsibility to guide them however he saw fit.<ref name="AC">''[[Assassin's Creed]]''</ref>

At some point, Garnier joined the Templar Order and learned their ways and secrets just like his fellow members. What he learned included the Templar's views and even information on the mysterious artifact, the [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]].

Following the siege of Acre, Garnier was granted jurisdiction of the Poor District in Acre. There, he set up his base of operation at the Hospitalier hospital, and continued his brutal experiments. Many of these "patients" were shipped to him from Jerusalem through Talal's slave trade. Rumors of his horrible work spread throughout the city, causing [[civilians]] to fear and avoid the hospital.<ref name="TSC" /><ref name="AC" />

When Altaïr infiltrated the Hospitalier Fortress with the intention of assassinating Garnier, a terrified patient attempted to escape, only to be captured by Garnier's guards. When Garnier revealed himself, he attempted to calm the patient with kind words. However, the patient caused an outburst, claiming that Garnier's true intentions were evil. After the doctor admonished him, he commanded the guards to break the patient's legs, knowing this would prevent another escape attempt.<ref name="TSC" /><ref name="AC" />

When Garnier dismissed the horrified crowd and returned to his work, the Assassin stealthily made his way inside the hospital, and located the doctor. Altaïr then took the doctor's life with his [[Hidden Blade]]. With his final words, Garnier claimed that he was actually helping his patients; although Altaïr tried to rebuke all of his claims, Garnier persisted in his beliefs.<ref name="TSC" /><ref name="AC" />

Garnier claimed that the people he took were among the poorest and most ill of the surrounding cities, and that many had recovered and were grateful for his generous help. He said his methods were necessary to free people from the "''prisons of their own minds.''" Altaïr asked if he truly believed that he was helping them, and Garnier simply replied, "''It's not what I believe, it's what I know.''" Before he could say any more, however, Garnier died, and Altaïr was left to escape the area, and report his success to the local [[Assassin bureau]].<ref name="TSC" /><ref name="AC" />

==Personality and characteristics==
Garnier genuinely believed that he was helping the people that he held in his hospital, despite committing cruel and unjust acts upon his patients, turning them into his slaves, and making them his guards. Even though he claimed to be a man of science, he did not seem to fear death, and even while he was communicating with Altaïr, he attempted to justify his actions, explaining why he dragged them from their supposed "homes" such as prisons, [[brothels]], or sewers.<ref name="TSC" /><ref name="AC" />

He often wore black robes with an apron that was stained from the blood of the patients who had been involved in his experiments. He had a small leather belt around his waist, which held up a small pouch, and he usually carried his sword around with him for protection. He was of average height and weight, with signs of aging, such as wrinkles and balding being prominent in his appearance.<ref name="AC" />

*Historically, Garnier de Naplouse fought at the [[Battle of Arsuf]] and died in 1191 while in ''Assassin's Creed'', he dies before the battle takes place in 1191. There is also no account the historical Garnier practiced unethical experiments on his patients.

Once his health reaches critical levels, Altaïr will wrestle with Garnier to slit his throat with a Hidden Blade. His death occurs in 1189 rather than 1191 as it is in the canonical console version.

Sophia Rikkin informed Callum that he had been brought to her facility in [[Madrid]], [[Spain]], in order to help Abstergo find the "cure to violence" inherently present in mankind - and more specifically, the numerous descendants of historical Assassins. In order to do so, he would need to locate an artifact known as the [[Aguilar's Apple of Eden|"Apple of Eden"]], which was last known to be in the possession of his ancestor [[Aguilar de Nerha]], a 15th century [[Spanish Assassins|Spanish Assassin]].<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Callum was hooked up the [[Animus#Animus 4.3|Animus]] and equipped with Aguilar's [[Hidden Blade]]s, which had previously been retrieved from the dead Assassin's burial site. Inside the machine, he was forced to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor, before being suddenly pulled out. Whilst collapsed on the floor, Callum began to see [[Bleeding Effect|images]] of Aguilar in the modern day.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

The next day Callum was introduced to the wider population at the facility, including [[Moussa]], a descendant of the 18th century [[Haitian Assassins|Haitian Assassin]] [[Baptiste]]. During a confusing encounter for Callum, he learned that the Assassins had protected, and continued to protect, the Apple from the Templars. Upon returning to his cell, Callum was once again greeted by a vision of Aguilar, and this time engaged in combat with the vivid image. It was at this moment that he was forcibly returned to the Animus at the insistence of Dr. Alan Rikkin, who was under pressure to locate the Apple in a timely fashion.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

This time, Callum's Animus session ended violently when he rapidly desynchronized from Aguilar, following the latter's [[Leap of Faith]] within the Animus. Any cerebral damage from the rapid desynchronization was quickly prevented by Sophia’s medical team, though Callum was briefly forced into a wheelchair due to the onset of a temporary paralysis.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

===Reunion===
The next day, Callum was greeted by Sophia's father, Alan Rikkin, who in an attempt to coerce Callum into willingly entering the Animus, informed him that his father was also present at the facility. Alan correctly assumed that Callum, rather than wanting to come to terms with his past, wished to destroy it.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Presented with his father's Hidden Blade, Callum confronted his father. Joseph informed Callum that his mother’s death had been necessary in order to keep the Templars from placing her in the Animus, and locating the Apple. Though Callum was unwilling to kill his father in cold blood, he promised to aid the Templars in locating the Apple, so that they might use it to destroy the Assassins in the modern day.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Callum once more returned to the Animus, this time willingly, in order to locate the Apple through Aguilar's memories. This time he was confronted by the facility's head of security, [[McGowen]], who gave Callum a brief history on the Assassins. McGowen admitted that he respected the Assassins' integrity and commitment to a cause, comparing Callum unfavourably against them.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Inside the Animus, Callum witnessed the betrayal of the Templars, when Aguilar's companion, [[Maria]], was murdered to [[Ojeda]] in order to regain the Apple. As Aguilar, in the past, escaped his Templar pursuers, Callum remained fully synchronised enough the successfully perform a Leap of Faith. Landing forcefully on the ground, the Animus arm attached to Callum jerked violently and broke, though he remained connected long enough for those present to witness Aguilar handing the Apple to [[Christopher Columbus]]. Having successfully located the Apple in Columbus' tomb in the [[Seville Cathedral]], Sophia and Alan Rikkin were forced to evacuate the facility due to a revolt led by [[Moussa]] and his fellow Assassin inmates.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Meanwhile, Callum remained connected to the Animus and was greeted by ghostly visions of several of his Assassin ancestors, from a number of historical periods, including not only Aguilar, but Callum's mother and father too. Accepting his place among the Assassins, Callum resolved to escape the facility and retrieve the Apple. Together with Moussa, [[Nathan]], [[Emir]], and [[Lin]], Callum fought his way out of the facility.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Despite the deaths of Nathan and Emir, the Assassins were successful in escaping the facility and tracked Rikkin to [[London]], where the Templar Order was meeting ''en masse'' to celebrate the retrieval of the Apple. Callum, Moussa, and Lin managed to infiltrate the meeting by breaking down their Hidden Blades into separate parts, before reconstructing them inside.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Callum briefly confronted Sophia who, having become disillusioned with her father's priorities - eliminating the Assassins over eliminating violence in general - did nothing to prevent Callum from retrieving the Apple and killing her father.<ref name="ACFilm"/>

Dilara was born and raised in the [[Topkapı Palace|Topkapı]] Harem in [[Constantinople]], and was taught from an early age to honor both the Sultan and his family. Amongst such a high-class noble crowd, she was also trained to strive for little more than a reputable position, and a fine husband.

Despite this, Dilara rebelled against the expectations and strict boundaries set to her, and became known as both ill-mannered and brazen; a reputation that she did not object to. Eventually, her attitude caught the attention of a [[Janissaries|Janissary]] named Tarik Barleti, who admired her boldness and charm. Both out of kindness and in an attempt for her affections, Tarik arranged for Dilara's release from the harem, to work instead as an envoy for the Janissaries. However, Dilara remained unmoved by this act; a failure that became a source of much grief for Tarik in his later years.

===Ottoman spy===
In 1512, Dilara and several other Ottomans were directed to act as spies in the Byzantine [[Templars|Templar]] base of Derinkuyu. Despite being the only woman among them, Dilara counted herself as their leader, and became quite dedicated to her allies.

After managing to gain an allegiance with the Byzantine leader, [[Manuel Palaiologos]], Tarik instructed the spies to watch the movements of the Byzantines, as well as the non-functioning [[Firearms|rifles]] Tarik had sold to the unknowing Manuel. Dilara and her allies were then supposed to follow the Templar movement, and meet up with Tarik's Janissary ambush upon reaching [[Bursa]].

However, unbeknownst to Dilara and her men, Tarik was assassinated by Ezio Auditore, despite their common intentions, due to the Assassin believing Tarik's Templar pretense. ===Scattering the Byzantines===

In March 1512, as Ezio traveled to the underground city, Dilara and her fellow spies were discovered and captured. However, since Dilara was dressed as a [[Slavery|slave]], she managed to slip away unnoticed. A week after the disaster, Ezio arrived, and after he had identified Dilara with [[Eagle Vision|his gift]], the Assassin approached her.

Still cautious from her encounter with the Byzantines, Dilara fled to lure the Assassin into a secluded area, where she then drew her [[Short blades|dagger]] on him, and questioned him threateningly. Ezio managed to calm her, and mentioned that Tarik had sent him, though Dilara was doubtful. Instructing the Assassin to find her when he was certain of his abilities, Dilara returned to the crowds. Not long after speaking with Ezio, Dilara loitered near to the underground city's prisons, but she was discovered by the [[guards]] and locked into a cell. Ezio caught word of her capture, and sought her out amongst the captives.

There, both of them overheard a conversation between Manuel and the {{Wiki|Oghuz Turks|Turkmen}} renegade [[Shahkulu]]. Looking to the bodies of the Ottoman spies that littered the room, Shahkulu commented that some of the prisoners were so "fragile", indicating that he had been responsible for their deaths. As he left, Shahkulu ordered for Dilara to be brought to the chapel, where he intended to beat several of the spies to death. However, Ezio managed to free her before the guards could return from their search for the key.

Upon seeing the bodies of her men, Dilara quietly spoke a blessing to them, and then ran off in pursuit of Shahkulu, declaring angrily that she would kill him. She arrived at the chapel with Ezio close behind her, where they found Shahkulu beating [[Janos]], another Ottoman spy.

While Dilara initially intended to attack Shahkulu, Ezio convinced her otherwise, and quietly killed the [[Arquebusiers|gunmen]] stationed around the area as he climbed higher, before leaping upon Shahkulu himself and stabbing him with his [[Hidden Blade]] before the man could harm Janos further. However, Shahkulu's thick [[armor]] protected him, and he was able to throw the Assassin back, after falsely pretending to have died. Rallying with his remaining soldiers, Shahkulu dueled with Ezio, but was eventually bested and killed.

Once he had finally fallen, Dilara ran to Janos' side to help him up, while Ezio checked if Shahkulu was truly dead, before questioning Dilara about the rifles they had brought. Dilara admitted that the firearms were fake, but that the gunpowder accompanying them was not.

With this, Ezio instructed Dilara and the other surviving Ottomans to keep out of sight, and escape only when they heard the explosions he would cause, by igniting the rifles' gunpowder reserves. Dilara protested this course of action, saying that he would panic the entire city, but the Assassin only stated that it was his intention, as he needed to flush out Manuel Palaiologos. Ezio then departed for the city's weapon cache, and Dilara and her allies left to seek safety.

Dilara was a very brash, but strong-willed woman. Though she was described as ill-tempered in her younger years, this never bothered her, and her bold independence was what brought her freedom from the Sultan's harem. Although she never seemed to reciprocate Tarik's feelings for her, Dilara nevertheless served the Janissary captain loyally, and grew close and protective over her fellow spies. Her skills allowed her to remain hidden among the enemy, even after her fellows had been captured.

Ezio once commented on her inability to cooperate with him, but Dilara said that she did not intend to "make friends", and only wished to rescue her allies. Though she was rude to the Assassin, not bothering to thank him even after he released her from prison, she showed open and honest concern for the men she worked alongside, as well as the innocent population of Derinkuyu.

*Dilara's attire was similar to that of the [[Civilians#Beggars|beggars]] in Constantinople.
*Despite being an ally, in the memory "[[The Spy Who Shunned Me]]", when viewed with Eagle Sense, Dilara would glow red.

The daughter of a palace guard, Zhang was the childhood best friend of [[Shao Jun]], who became an [[Assassins|Assassin]] after escaping the Imperial court.

==Biography==
During Emperor [[Zhengde Emperor|Zhengde]]'s rule, young Zhang and Jun were poised to become an Imperial Consort or even Empress, but with his death, their fate became unclear. During the interregnum, Jun contacted the Assassins and left Zhang with the new ruler, Jiajing. Fortunately, she did not lose her title.

After the [[Great Rites Controversy]], Jun infiltrated the Forbidden City to free Zhang and the other concubines. Zhang refused the offer, and told her that she wanted to stay, even if the Emperor was a cruel man – she elaborated that she was lucky to please him and did not want to hear about [[Templars|Templar]] plots. Zhang then told Jun to leave in peace, and Jun accepted her decision. With her hard work and patience, Zhang became the Jiajing's Empress.

In 1530, [[Zhang Yong]] and [[Qiu Ju]] used Empress Zhang to set a trap for Shao Jun, the two Templars forcing her co-operation by threatening her life. When Jun arrived, she was horrified to find the only person alive that she could trust had betrayed her; nevertheless, she forgave Zhang, once the Templars made their presence clear to her.

About four years later, on account of unknown conflicts between her and Emperor Jiajing, she was stripped of her title. Zhang died sometime in the year 1537 without conceiving any imperial children.
