'''Marooned''' was a virtual representation of one of [[Edward Kenway]]'s [[Genetic memory|genetic memories]], relived by [[Abstergo Entertainment research analyst|a research analyst]] at [[Abstergo Entertainment]] through the [[Animus]].

==Description==
Stranded on [[Isla Providencia]], Edward was forced to deal with [[Charles Vane]] and his insane antics.

==Dialogue==
Edward was fishing for food as Charles Vane snuck up on him.
*'''Vane:''' ''Keep still now! I'll take these oysters you've hoarded.''
*'''Edward:''' ''You mad sap. This island's crawling with food if only you'd care to look for it.''
*'''Vane:''' ''I am looking, lout. I found some just here. Don't! Don't come following now! You hear me! Don't come looking for me!''
*'''Edward:''' ''Wretched fool.''
Edward followed Vane through the jungle.
*'''Vane:''' ''Here's a health to the king and a lasting peace / To faction an end, to wealth increase. / Come, let us drink it while we have breath. / For there's no drinking after death. / And he that will this health deny, Down among the dead men, / Down among the dead men, / Down, down, down, down, / Down among the dead men let him lie. Go dance with the fisherman and their dories, Kenway! This island's mine! Come at me and I'll cap you, bastard! It were your bloody imagination that landed us here, Kenway! I'll be damned if I let that mind make one more decision for me!''
*'''Edward:''' ''Will you not talk to me, Vane? Are you fixed on this madness?''
*'''Vane:''' ''Madness? Nothing mad about a man fighting to survive, is there!''
*'''Edward:''' ''I mean you no harm, you corker! Now let's work this out like gentlemen!''
*'''Vane:''' ''Ah. God I've got a bleeding headache on account of your jabbering. Now stay back and let me live in peace!''
*'''Edward:''' ''I would if you stopped filching the food I gather and the water I find!''
*'''Vane:''' ''I'll stop nothing 'til you've paid me back in blood. You was the reason we were out looking for [[Slavery|slavers]]. And you was the reason [[Jack Rackham]] took my crew!''
*'''Edward:''' ''VANE! Face me, man!''
*'''Vane:''' ''Ah! I said not to follow!''
Vane attacked Edward using some weaponry he found amongst the ruins.
[[File:Marooned_3.png|thumb|250px|Edward trying to reason with Vane]]
*'''Edward:''' ''Jaysus! You've lost your head, man!''
*'''Vane:''' ''It's a fair exchange for finding these [[Firearms|flintlocks]] and grenadoes!''
*'''Edward:''' ''Listen Vane! We could hunt with those guns!''
*'''Vane:''' ''And I mean to! You and your bloody fairy stories got us into this mess, Kenway. And I'll be damned if I let you drag me into another!''
*'''Edward:''' ''You keep this up, I'll have to kill ya, Vane!''
*'''Vane:''' ''Bloody try! By all means! I see you coming, curl! I see you plain and clear! It's either you or me who's leaving this island alive, Welcher! 'Cause I'm not gonna sail again in a world cursed by your ugly mug!''
Edward managed to sneak up on Vane and jump him from above.
*'''Edward:''' ''You god damn fucking knave, Vane!'' (while angrily punching vane)
*'''Vane:''' ''N-nancy boy. Y-you only done half of the fucking job!''
*'''Edward:''' ''Fucking hell. Is this my reward for believing the best about men? For thinking that a bilge rat like you could muster up some fucking sense, once in a while! Maybe [[Benjamin Hornigold|Hornigold]] was right. Maybe the world does need men of ambition to stop the likes of you from mucking it all up.''
*'''Vane:''' ''Or maybe you just don't have the stones to live with no regrets.''
*'''Edward:''' ''Don't save me a spot in hell, shanker. I ain't coming soon.''
'''John "Jack" Rackham''' (1682 – 1720), more commonly known as '''Calico Jack''', was a [[Jamaica]]n-born [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Piracy|pirate]] who operated in the [[Caribbean|West Indies]] during the early 18th century. He was the captain of a [[schooner]] called the ''[[Royal Phoenix]]'', prior to her destruction in 1718.

At some point, Rackham began serving as quartermaster under [[Charles Vane]], though he grew to loathe his fellow pirate's hot temper and violent nature over the years. Supported by his crewmates, Rackham seized command in November 1718, deposing Vane as captain and setting him, along with [[Edward Kenway]], adrift in a damaged sloop.

To the frustration of his crew, Rackham possessed limited aspirations as a pirate captain, and soon returned to [[Nassau]] to accept the [[George I|King]]'s pardon. There, he entered into a relationship with barmaid [[Anne Bonny]], who convinced him to return to his previous life in August 1720.

Together with [[Mary Read]], the duo escaped Nassau and plundered and pillaged for a few months, before being arrested by the British authorities. Tried and convicted of piracy, Rackham was executed in [[Port Royal]] on 18 November 1720.
==History==
===Early years===
In 1682, Jack Rackham was born in [[Port Royal]], Jamaica, at the height of the town's debauched history. As such, Jack aged into a frequent drunk who was rarely serious about anything. It was during these early years that he developed an affinity for [[India]]n and [[Asia]]n prints, earning him his nickname.

Eventually, the call of piracy proved too strong for Rackham to ignore and he became associated with [[Charles Vane]], an English captain who had served as a privateer in the [[Royal Navy]] during the [[War of Spanish Succession]].

===Life as a pirate===
In 1717, both Charles Vane and Jack Rackham traveled to [[Nassau]] – home of the burgeoning Pirate Republic – to make their living. There they met several other pirates, including some of Vane's former privateering associates; [[Edward Kenway]], [[Edward Thatch]], and [[Benjamin Hornigold]]. Together, the two men informed the others of a huge ransom being held at [[Punta Guarico|a nearby fort]] by [[Cuba]]n governor [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]], prompting Kenway to storm the [[Forts|fort]] and take the gold.

A year later, in 1718 Jack became involved in a plot by Kenway and Vane to breach a British blockade of Nassau, set up after the [[Templars|Templar]], Governor [[Woodes Rogers]], had traveled to the city to reclaim it in the name of the [[Monarchy|British Crown]]. Rogers had previously offered the pirate captains and their crews amnesty, if they would give up their pirating and return to Britain; an offer both Vane and Rackham refused.

===Mutiny===
Following their escape from Nassau, which came at the expense of Jack's ship, the ''Royal Phoenix'', the three pirate captains agreed to pursue Kenway's fabled [[Observatory]]. They would start by locating a ship of the [[Royal African Company]], which they hoped would lead them to the ''[[Princess]]'', a slave ship carrying [[Bartholomew Roberts]], the only man able to locate the Observatory.

Eventually, they found and engaged the slave ship ''[[Royal African Pearl]]'', but Vane's vessel was devastated in the battle and left adrift. Despite this, Kenway's ''[[Jackdaw]]'' was able to capture the warship, where they learned that the ''Princess'' sailed from Kingston every few months. At that moment, Rackham struck.

[[File:Vainglorious Bastards 9.png|thumb|250px|left|Rackham leading the mutiny against Vane]]
In alliance with the ''[[Ranger]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s crew, Jack mutinied against Vane, apprehending him alongside Kenway and the ''Jackdaw'''s quartermaster, [[Adéwalé]]. Rackham remarked that he would sell Adéwalé in a local slave market, but that he could take no chances with Kenway or Vane, and so elected to strand them aboard the unseaworthy ''Ranger'' while he claimed the ''Jackdaw'' as his own.

Barely two months had passed before Rackham limped back to Nassau to accept the King's pardon. Upon his arrival he was detained by [[Mary Read|James Kidd]] and Adéwalé, the man he had recently tried to sell into slavery. Not long thereafter, the three traveled to Kenway's manor on [[Great Inagua]], where they returned control of the ship to the formerly marooned captain.

===Return to piracy, capture and death===
Despite his actions, Jack was able to continue his life in Nassau. By 1720, he had become involved with [[Anne Bonny]], a married woman who worked at the Old Avery tavern in the settlement. Before long, however, Anne's infidelity was discovered and Jack, unable to buy off Anne's spurned husband, elected to elope with her. Together with James Kidd, now openly acting as Mary Read, Anne and Jack left Nassau and returned to a career as pirates.

[[File:To Suffer Without Dying 3.png|thumb|250px|Edward seeing Rackham's body in a gibbet]]
At first they did well, capturing a number of small fishing vessels, but within four months of leaving Nassau they were attacked by the Royal Navy. With Jack and his crew passed out from drink, there stood only Anne Bonny, Mary Read and a third man to fight off the Royal Navy. Soon enough, the three were overrun and the vessel captured. Rackham, Bonny and Read were taken to Port Royal, and sentenced to hang for the crime of piracy.

A few weeks after his sentencing, Jack was executed, and his body subsequently placed in a {{Wiki|Gibbeting|gibbet}} where it was left to rot to be seen as a threat to other pirates. Several months later, his skeleton was visited by Edward Kenway who, having escaped his own gibbet imprisonment, was in the process of assisting in the escape of Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Edward confessed that despite Jack's failings as both a sailor and a friend, jack was always the one to make him laugh as he was full of more merriment than anyone he knew and it dismayed him to see him in that state. Before leaving to continue his mission, edward says hopes the Jack found peace down there in the land among the dead.

*Rackham is available as a legendary crew member in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Pirates]]'' for the cost of 100,000 coins, and unlocks the "Gun Crazy" ship perk.

{{Era|AC4|4book}}
'''Linette Kenway''' (née '''Hopkins''') was a farmer from {{Wiki|Cardiff}}, {{Wiki|Wales}}, the wife of [[Bernard Kenway]] and the mother of [[Edward Kenway]].

She was the grandmother of Edward's two children, [[Haytham Kenway]] and [[Jennifer Scott]], as well as the great-grandmother of Haytham's son, [[Ratonhnhaké:ton]].

==Biography==
===Early life===
Hailing from Cardiff, Linette fell in love with an Englishman from {{Wiki|Manchester}}, Bernard Kenway, whom she married. The pair settled in {{Wiki|Swansea}} and had a daughter together, though she would die during infancy. In 1693, they had another child, a boy, whom they named Edward.

In 1703, Linette and her family moved to [[Hatherton]], a village near [[Bristol]], where they ran a small household keeping sheep. The family was respected by their neighbors, even if at the edge of adulthood, Edward was known for frequenting the [[taverns]]. Having basic skill in reading, Linette took care of the book-keeping while her husband took care of the farm and Edward was in charge of the trips to the city for the sales.

===Initial troubles===
At one point, in the [[Auld Shillelagh]], Edward provoked the anger of [[Tom Cobleigh]], his [[Seth Cobleigh|son]] and their [[Julian|associate]] when he fought them to keep Tom from raping [[Rose]], the maidservant of [[Caroline Scott-Kenway|Caroline Scott]] whom the three had gotten drunk. Two days later, the group slaughtered two of the Kenways' sheep and placed the carcasses in front of the Kenway house, where they were discovered by Linette.

When Edward won the heart of an already engaged Caroline Scott, Linette and Bernard were present at their wedding and witnessed [[Emmett Scott]] disowning his own daughter for her misalliance. They gave shelter to the young couple at their home, but Edward's ambitions would continue to cause tension. Eventually, Caroline, disappointed in her husband's plans of becoming a privateer, left the Kenway farmstead for her father's house. This broke Linette's heart, as she had become fond of the young woman and saw her as the daughter she had lost.

In late 1712, a group of hooded men were sent by Caroline's father to burn down the Kenway farmstead. This occurred while Linette and Bernard were sleeping inside and when Edward was in Bristol, setting out for his life as a privateer. Due to his departure being delayed, Edward ventured back to Hatherton and witnessed the men at his farm, but despite his attempts to defend his home, the group pinned him to the ground and beat him before leaving. Afterward, Edward alerted his parents to the fire, but the outcome was dire: the fire had killed all the livestock. It was due to this that Bernard disowned his son, and before Linette could say anything, Edward left.

===Later life===
Following the attack on their farm, the Kenways descended into poverty, forcing Linette to work in the Auld Shillelagh. In December 1717, Bernard died of {{Wiki|pleurisy}} and Linette sent a letter to her son informing him of his father's death, while worrying about the rumors which announced that Edward had became a [[Piracy|pirate]]. Years later, having heard that Caroline had died of smallpox, she tried to go to the funeral, but the Scotts forbade her from entering the cemetery.

Linette saw her son again in 1723, when Edward came back to Bristol with her granddaughter, Jennifer. Edward came to see his exhausted mother in the tavern where she was working, with the intention of taking care of her now that he had money, and he informed her of his intentions to kill the [[Templars]] who had ordered the burning of his parents' farm – Emmett Scott, [[Aubrey Hague]] and [[Wilson]]. Horrified by the killer he had become during his time in the [[Caribbean|West Indies]] and by his plans to commit more murders, she disowned him too as her husband before her, calling Edward "no-son-of-mine" in front of everyone in the Auld Shillelagh.
It is unknown if she ever made amends with her son and was alive to be able to see her future grandson Haytham years later.
