Shahkulu (unknown - 1512) was a Turkmen renegade, who became an orphan after an Ottoman attack on his tribe. Homeless, Shahkulu joined the Templar Order and dedicated his life to his new cause. In 1511, he became the leader of the Shahkulu rebellion - a widespread pro-Shia and pro-Safavid uprising in Anatolia, directed against the Ottoman Empire.

In 2012, his genetic memories were used by the Templar-owned company Abstergo Industries, for the training of their Animus recruits, under the title of the Renegade.

Biography
Early life
As a child, Shahkulu was born into a Turkmen tribe in eastern Anatolia, which was oppressed by the Ottoman Empire as it was on the edge of its boundaries. Later on in his life, an Ottoman ambush on his tribe left him orphaned and alone. Seeking revenge and a sense of belonging, Shahkulu joined the Templar Order. Over time, Shahkulu grew to hate the Ottoman Turks for what they had done to his people, as well any who opposed the Templar ideology, and made it his mission to eliminate any that stood in his Order's way.

Partnership with Manuel
Shahkulu eventually became a feared Templar, and circa 1511, formed a partnership with the heir to the fallen Byzantine Empire and fellow Templar, Manuel Palaiologos. Shahkulu aided Manuel in his attempt to restore the Byzantines remnants to their former strength, partly because he believed Manuel would reward him if the Empire was successfully restored. By mid 1511, Shahkulu, with Manuel, met with Janissary Captain, Tarik Barleti in Constantinople to gain access to the Arsenal to check a shipment of weapons.

Inspecting the weapons, Shahkulu reminded Manuel that he aided him in restoring his army and that he should not be forgotten. Manuel assured him that he would not forget the debt he owed Shahkulu, right before leaving the arsenal.

Death
In 1512, Shahkulu retreated to the Templar headquarters in Cappadocia. There, several of Tarik Barleti's spies were captured. Being Ottoman Turks, Shahkulu personally killed every one of them, savagely beating each one to death. After a meeting with Manuel, who had consulted Shahkulu on his beating of the Ottoman spies, he demanded that his men bring the remaining spies to the chapel, where he intended to publicly torture and execute them.

One of the guards replied that he did not have the key, causing Shahkulu to angrily yell at him to find it. However, the Assassin Ezio Auditore had being spying on the entire meeting, and after learning the location of the key, set off to retrieve it before them. Shortly afterwards, a crowd gathered at the chapel where Shahkulu was to perform one of his public killings.

Shahkulu came onto the courtyard of the chapel, and immediately began beating a spy named Janos to death. However, Ezio attempted to assassinate Shahkulu from above with his hidden blade. Ezio told Shahkulu that he deserved no pity for his sadism. However, Shahkulu's armor saved him from the killing blow, and he began to strangle Ezio. The Assassin stabbed his target's arm with his hookblade, yet Shahkulu threw him aside, prompting a duel between the two, Despite several Byzantine troops aiding him, Shahkulu was eventually defeated.

Trivia
*So far, Shahkulu is the only character that survived two lethal blows from Ezio: Once for the initial assassination, and another when Shahkulu tried to choke him.
*When looking carefully at Shahkulu during cutscenes, his eyes seem to glow a venemous orange-brown behind his helmet's mask.
Armor was metal plating or leather pieces designed to provide protection to the wearer and was available for purchase at blacksmiths. They fortified the health and damage resistance of the wearer. However, armor could also be broken if it took too much damage causing a temporary loss in maximum health until repaired.

High Middle Ages
During the Crusades, Altaïr wore a standard Assassin combat uniform that primarily consisted of vambraces, greaves, shoes and a protective belt, all made in leather. The main vambrace, which was always worn on an Assassin's left forearm, conceals the Hidden Blade with a series of metal plating arranged in formation for combat protection. As an Assassin was promoted through the ranks of the Order, his waist belt would also be upgraded to reflect the new found status. Altaïr and Malik both bore the highest level combat uniform in the Assassin's Order, with the most prestigious three-layer waist belts.

Desynchronization
Because Desmond lost Synchronization every time Altaïr was killed during combat, it is implied that Altaïr was never killed nor mortally wounded in armed conflicts or during assassinations. This would be feasible given his reputation as a legendary warrior of his time and his lineage.

Codex
Using the Apple of Eden Altaïr created the Codex pages as well as a new suit of armor for himself, one that was almost impossible to damage. This new armor would be passed down to each of his descendants, eventually being hidden away in the Sanctuary beneath the Villa Auditore.

Other Characters
Armor did appear on other individuals, and there were differences in the styles worn by guards in each city.

The guards in Damascus could be found in either lamellar, leather, or ringmail armor.

Guards in Acre could be seen in brigantine armor and chain mail, some complete with coifs.

Guards in Jerusalem were often found wearing scale or splintmail.

Each of these guard types could be found in the Kingdom near their respective cities.

The Knights Templar uniformly wore full suits of chain mail covered in a white tabbard with a red steel helm covering their face. All of the Knights Templar wore their signature red cross openly, whereas future Templars wore the cross symbol more subtly.

Italy
Ezio Auditore could purchase different types of armor from blacksmiths found throughout the game's various cities. There were four sets of armor that could be purchased, and a fifth - the Armor of Altaïr which could be gained through acquiring all of the Assassin's seals. Each set contained four individual pieces: chest plates, greaves, spaulders, and vambraces.

Leather Armor was the first available armor and provided health bonuses but no resistance bonuses. Later Ezio could purchase Helmschmied, a variant of leather with metal inlays, Metal Armor and Missaglias, a stylized set of metal armor. Every armor after the leather set offers health bonuses and resistance bonuses. Armor could be damaged through combat or by falling from buildings so it was necessary to repair it at blacksmiths regularly. Each armor had a set number of circles that it could resist. In general twenty squares of combat or falling damage to the synch bar would remove one circle of resistance from every piece of armor one had equipped.

Altaïr's armor
Ezio could unlock Altaïr's improved armor by collecting the six Assassin seals from the tombs of six different Assassins. It consisted of black cloth with specially made armor integrated into it akin to the mythical properties of the Golden Fleece. As such the armor never required repairs. When dyed, all that changed was the inside color of the armor. Page 19 of Altaïr's Codex revealed that this was the only suit made by Altaïr, who destroyed the written formula out of fear of the armor becoming widely used either by friend or foe alike.

Other Characters
All types of soldiers in Italy were armored to varying degrees, with archers as the lightest, followed by Agiles, regular soldiers, Seekers, and Brutes. Elite soldiers wear heavier armor than regular soldiers making them more resistant to Ezio's attacks and counter-attacks.

Rome
During the siege of Monteriggioni Ezio lost the Armor of Altaïr forcing him to run into battle clothed in a simple shirt, trousers and boots. Later on in Rome, Ezio's new robes and armor were anonymously given to him by Machiavelli. Ezio's newer attire resembled the clothes of Altaïr, with longer robes and a longer hood. Ezio's new armor came only with a spaulder and a single vambrace.

Ezio was able to purchase armor upgrades, just like in the previously visited cities, in a blacksmith shop. It was also possible to complete specific quests for the blacksmith shop on Tiber Island, in order to unlock parts of the Seusenhofer armor. The only set of armor that could not be purchased is the Helmschmied Drachen Armor (This armor's is available with the purchase of The Da Vinci Disappearance DLC).
Armor designs in Rome had changed and were given metal inlays during the second and last set of purchasable armors. The Roman armor set was made of leather while the Rondelle armor set had the same design with metal inlays, the Plate armor was the unstylized with metal inlays of the Seusenhofer armor. When all six Keys of Romulus were obtained, Ezio was given the Armor of Brutus, an unbreakable armor.

Recruits
Ezio's Assassin Recruits could also wear armor; this was upgradeable as the assassin leveled up free of charge. A recruit started with no armor but could acquire leather pauldrons, leather greaves, a leather chest guard, and finally, a full set of plate armor (which replaced all the parts of leather armor already equipped). With 'level four' armor being the best recruits could have - they had more than double their original health, making plate armor extremely useful. Once the recruits reach the rank of Assassin however, they will have new robes (resembling that of Ezio's Master robes) and the armor of a full-fledged Assassin.

Other Characters
Guards were armored similarly those stationed in other Italian regions, with the addition of the Papal Guard as the most heavily armored opponents. Of the new guard archetypes the Crossbowmen were equal in defense to Archers, while Arquebusiers matched standard guards.

Constantinople
During Ezio's travels in Constantinople, he encountered a new variety of armor. From blacksmiths, he could acquire Azap Leather armor, the weakest, Mamluk Metal armor - stronger than the Azap Leather - and the Sepahi Riding armor, the strongest of the three. Additionally, upon initiating seven Assassin Recruits into becoming Master Assassins (doing the first part of every Master Assassin mission) he acquired the Master Assassin armor. After finding all ten of Ishak Pasha's memoir pages, he then journeyed inside the Hagia Sophia to obtain the Armor of Ishak Pasha.
Armor
* Ezio's initial spaulder in Rome is leather, while the cover art depicts him wearing a metal spaulder. His new hidden blade bracer was the same as it is on the cover, as well as his hidden blade. But like the metal spaulder, Ezio's second hidden blade does not appear like the one on the cover. Instead, it was a brown glove like his original second hidden blade used in the Assassin's Creed II E3 Demo, and also on pre-released Assassin's Creed II pictures. The second blade was originally displayed as an identical blade and bracer as his primary blade and bracer.
* Vambraces for the second hidden blade can be bought at a blacksmith only when the second hidden blade is purchased from Leonardo, but none of the vambraces have the design of the bracer shown in the cover art.
* The Armor of Altaïr, the Armor of Brutus, the Master Assassin armor and the Armor of Ishak Pasha all give 25 health squares without the need of repairs.
* With the Master Assassin armor equiped, Ezio's clothing color is returned to the default Original Grey. It will stay that way until you unequip the Master Assassin armor. It will still be possible to dye your clothes, however, this will not be noticeable until you unequip the armor. Additionally, like the Armor of Ishak Pasha, &nbsp; the hood will remain on in cutscenes.
* In Revelations, if you replay the second memory of the first sequence, any armor will be removed and will stay that way even after the completion of the memory.
Mediterranean Defense was the name given to the apprentice contracts in Constantinople during the Renaissance.

History
During the early 16th Century, the Assassin Brotherhood - under the direction of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the Mentor of the Italian Assassins - sought to expand its influence by sending apprentices and recruits to cities controlled by the Templars. Their exploits ranged from simple acts, such as protecting merchants and officials who were loyal to the Brotherhood or against the Templars, to greater plots involving assassinations and freeing jailed allies. Some special requests - specifically the bomb ingredient quests of Piri Reis - involved the Assassins traveling to specific cities and mapping the area.

Many of these cities were eventually freed from Templar rule and came under Assassin control. The Brotherhood took special care to improve the standard of living in these regions by improving daily income and providing many opportunities for their newly-liberated citizens. The apprentices who were sent on these missions gained experience, and as a whole, the Assassin Order gained funds to further their operations, as well as other rewards.

A constant danger, however, was the possibility of Templar reprisal. Contracts must be completed regularly to maintain the Assassins' control of the city. Should the Assassins' control fall too low, Templars will try to retake the city and Ezio will have to assign assassins to the Defending the City contract in order to regain full control.

The cities to which Ezio was able to send his recruits were:
*Marseille
*Damascus
*Jerusalem
*Madrid
*Lisbon
*Genoa
*Tunis
*Tripoli
*Algiers
*Alexandria
*Bursa
*Athens
*Rhodes

Trivia
*Managing Assassin Guilds in reclaimed cities is the easiest method of removing Assassins should you wish to recruit more apprentices.
*Some Mediterranean Defense missions have a reward of automatically recruiting one apprentice to your ranks if you have a vacancy. These missions typically appear when you have vacancies in your Constantinople assassin squad.
*Managing Assassin Guilds increases the percentage-of-control capacity of the city. A city with no assassins garrisoned has a percentage-of-control capacity of 50%. The maximum amount of assassins garrisoned permitted is 5 where the percentage-of-control capacity is 100%. However placing 5 low ranked assassins in a city will yield a percentage-of-control capacity below 100% but higher than 50%.
*When you have assassins garrisoned in a city, you can assign them to missions instead of drawing upon your personal group based in Constantinople. Your personal group can be used to compliment the garrisoned assassins in city missions or bring a city back under your control from a Templar siege.
*Every 20 minutes, at the same time you receive your revenue deposit at the bank from city renovations, all the cities will lose a random percentage of Assassin control (or an increase in Templar control if you haven't reclaimed the city yet). If that percentage reduces Assassin control to 0%, the city will be sieged by the Templars and you will not recieve any bomb ingredients from there.
*Some city missions require a specific type of Assassin to be assigned before any others can be assigned along. There are four types each signified by a symbol by their rank number: crossbow, heavy weapon, short blade, and hidden blade.
*There is an achievement in Assassin's Creed: Revelations called "Armchair General" for controlling all of the cities (except Rhodes) simultaneously.<br />
Ziplines were ropes stretched between two structures that, when used in conjunction with the hookblade, allowed one to quickly navigate the city.

After traveling to Constantinople and learning of the hookblade from the local Assassins, Ezio Auditore da Firenze made use of ziplines to both navigate different areas, and perform air assassinations on targets below him.

Trivia
*Capturing a Templar Den, which converts it into an Assassin Den, will increase the amount of ziplines in the area around it.
*Ziplines can be jumped upon at any point along the line.
*Parachuting onto a zipline is required to unlock the achievement/trophy, Show Off 20G/Bronze Trophy.
*Byzantines can be seen trying to destroy ziplines after they take control of dens.
*Although much rarer, Byzantines can still be seen trying to destroy ziplines even if Constantinople is completely under Assassin control.
*High profile will make Ezio slide down the zipline faster, while low profile makes you go slightly slower.

The Almogavars were fairly uncommon guards that appeared in Constantinople and Cappadocia during the Renaissance. Roughly comparable to the Brutes from Rome, they fought with heavy weapons, were rather slow compared to other enemies, and wore thick armor. Like the Varangians, the Almogavars were Byzantine guards. They are featured in many missions.

Trivia
*The Almogavars were historically soldiers of aragones and catalan origin. They were known to have worked as mercenaries for the Byzantine Empire.
*The Almogavars, like the Janissaries – except in some missions – are always found carrying the same weapon: the Almogavar Axe.
*The Almogavar Axe can also be used as a weapon, after completing The Champion, Part 1 memory.
*It is peculiar that Almogavars use heavy weapons in-game, they used lances and spears historically.
*Some courageous Templar Den Captains look and fight like Almogavars. Some cowardly Captains also look like Almogavars.
*Unlike Brutes in Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Almogavars can be killed with a counter if their attack is not the overhead smash.
