Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

The Creed is the code and guiding philosophy of the Assassin Order, upheld from the Third Crusade, until modern days. Al Mualim, one of the Grand Masters of the Assassins, once stated that, "We are nothing if we do not abide by the Assassin's Creed."

The Creed restricts unnecessary slaughter of innocents, preserves the reputation of one's self and of the Order, and is meant to create peace, not only within the world, but within the individual. The Assassins have been handing the Creed down orally from generation to generation, ensuring that the message the Creed brings is delivered to every member of the Assassin Order.

In the ancient Codex of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, it is stated that the Creed cannot be killed, even if all of its followers are.

The Three Tenets
The Creed mainly emphasizes three simple, moral tenets that focus on ensuring a successful mission, mastery of emotions, and the safety of the Brotherhood.

Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent
The goal of the Assassins is to ensure peace in all things. The Assassins believe that political assassinations and the death of the corrupt will bring peace and a true sense of security to the common people. Slaying innocents and civilian bystanders who do not need to die goes a long way towards spreading strife and discord, in addition to ruining the name of the Assassin Order itself.

Also, since the Assassin Order is mostly composed of Muslim people, a religious rule( from the sixth pillar of Islam, which is Jihad) Muslim warriors must only kill their enemies and not hurt the innocents.

Always be discreet
Be unseen. The Assassins aim is to get close to their target stealthily, usually in public, to perform awe-inspiring assassinations. The greatest illusion from an assassination is, an Assassin seemingly materializes from nowhere, kills a corrupt public figure, and vanishes into the depth of the crowd or environment. If an Assassin is spotted stalking their target, the supernatural effect is diluted, simply making it more difficult for the Assassin to reach his target.

Never compromise the Brotherhood
The actions of one must never bring harm to all. If an Assassin fails, is captured, or is being chased, he must never commit an action or say anything that can be tied back to the Brotherhood.

The Maxim
Laa shay'a waqui'n moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine.
"Nothing is true, everything is permitted" is the Creed's maxim and primary guideline. The phrase was created during the 11th century (1000's) by Hassan-i Sabbah, the first recorded Grand Master of the Assassin Order.

The quote simply means that nothing anyone says about how we should be or should act is true, and that everything we could ever think of doing within the realm of actual possibility is permitted to happen, and so it does.

Penalty for Disobedience
When Altaïr breaks all three tenets during an extremely important mission at Solomon's Temple, he is stripped of all his weapons and equipment, and demoted to the lowest rank of Novice. By murdering an innocent (an old man who he thought could have alerted the guards), revealing himself to Robert de Sable, and leading the Templars back to the – until then, secret – location of Masyaf, he jeopardized not only his own safety, but the livelihood of the entire Brotherhood.

History
Third Crusade
After the shame of his demotion, Altaïr more closely followed the Creed by never killing anyone other than guards or his assigned assassination targets, and remaining discreet as he performed his investigations. He was also careful to never compromise the Brotherhood, by avoiding Assassin Bureaus when under pursuit.

Nevertheless, Altaïr unknowingly broke the third tenet after dispatching eight of the high-ranked Templar members. Upon deducing his mission, Robert de Sable hoped to trick Altaïr into inadvertently allying two opposing forces. Since the targets were of both Saracen and Crusader origins, their respective leaders, Saladin and Richard I of England, would likely be more willing to join together, in order to combat a considerable, new threat: the Assassins. Robert attempted to convince Richard to join forces with Saladin in an attack against Masyaf; wherein he planned to recover the Piece of Eden lost to Al Mualim at Solomon's Temple. However, Altaïr's subduing of Robert in front of Richard convinced not to attack the Assassins, and Altaïr went unpunished for this transgression.

Renaissance
You are not Vieri, do not become him.

When Ezio Auditore killed Vieri de' Pazzi during one of his early assassinations, he showed disrespect to his corpse, cursing him and calling for his everlasting suffering. Seeing this as a violation of the Creed, his uncle Mario intervened, chastising the young Assassin for his vengeance, which prevented both the victim and the Assassin from finding the peace that all assassinations through the Order wished to achieve.

Throughout the course of his life subsequently, Ezio followed his uncle's example, showing respect for the dead by closing their eyes and saying "Requiescat in pace" (or "Rest in peace").

Modern Times
Though an Assassin in his own right, Desmond Miles mostly adhered to the Creed in order to maintain synchronization with his ancestors, whose lives he observed through the Animus. He did, however, follow the second tenet to a certain extent before his incarceration at Abstergo, and was careful about hiding his identity. For years, he was able to bypass Templar detection by avoiding the use of his real name or of credit cards, and was only caught after applying for a driver's license for his motorcycle.

Trivia
*Interestingly, the player can slaughter Masyaf guards with no special repercussions. These Assassin guards have the same abilities as Saracen or Crusader guards, despite the typical Assassin training being far more specialized in close combat than regular military training.
*After completing the main storyline of Assassin's Creed, the player can kill civilians without losing sync with their ancestor.
*The Creed's maxim, that nothing is true and everything is permitted, has a somewhat disputed history; occasionally being incorrectly attributed to Fyodor Dostoevsky, although the idea, if not the exact phrase forms a very crucial part of the philosophical backdrop for his "Brothers Karamazov." Intriguingly, one of the characters in this novel postulates what is essentially the Templar mindset in the "the grand inquisitor parable", although Dostoevsky clearly is critical himself of this mindset, and attempts throughout the novel to refute it, as the Assassins did, seeing free will as a fundamental quality of humanity.
*The exact phrase "Nothing is true; everything is permitted" is taken from the novel Alamut, by Vladimir Bartol, a book that served as a primary inspiration for Assassin's Creed. In it, the maxim is the highest truth of the Ismaili, the sect of Islam that gave rise to the historical Hashashins.
In the Assassin's Creed series, fists are the weakest form of fighting available to the player. Guards will not intervene with a fistfight, unless they themselves are attacked. However, if the player draws a weapon, they will intervene.

Third Crusade
In Assassin's Creed, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad can use his fists to fight or stun enemies at any time, though they are quite ineffective as the guards will still be using weapons. As a novice, they are the only form of combat he can use in a fight, though that is only for one mission. He mainly uses them in special situations, such as interrogating a target, or after being caught by a thug while attempting to pickpocket throwing knives, as drawing a weapon will cause them to flee.

Renaissance Italy (1476 - 1499)
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore da Firenze is more skilled in fistfighting than his ancestor Altaïr. He can perform many different combination strikes, counter other fist fighters, throw sand in their faces, and eventually learn how to disarm foes and use their weapons. The special attack while unarmed is to lean down and sweep sand into the opponent's eyes, breaking their defences, thus opening them up for a quick attack or even kill. Fists also become a more viable tool for combat when the Metal Cestus, a hard steel hand-guard that strengthens the attack of the fists, becomes available for purchase from blacksmiths. All of this is available because of the game's programming. Many evidences still show that Altair is the better assassin, for he was the one who made Ezio's weapons.

Renaissance Italy (1500 - 1507)
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio is still able to disarm his opponents, but now has the added ability to kill them in one swift move by hitting them once more, thus performing a combination strike. This combination strike can also be done by simply hitting a guard, as long as he is not already in open combat. Guards can now also throw sand in Ezio's face, exactly as he can, but they do not require their hands to be free. However, Ezio can perform the same move with his weapon equipped, as long as he has no bullets or throwing knives left.

Modern Times
During the beginning and end of Assassin's Creed II, Desmond is able fistfight Abstergo security officers. Though at the beginning, his abilities are rather slim, and is only able to perform basic moves, but once he has gained some of Ezio's skills through the bleeding effect, his fistfighting vastly improves, and he is now able to perform the more advanced techniques, such as disarming an enemy. As well as this, his ability to simultaneously use his newly acquired hidden blade resembles that of a highly trained Assassin.

Stats
Without the Metal Cestus upgrade, Ezio's fists have 1 damage, 5 speed, and 1 counter. The Metal Cestus boosts the damage stat to 3.

Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed II, you earn the Achievement/Trophy, Messer Sandman, worth 10G or a Bronze Trophy, by using the sand throwing technique on four guards at once.
*When Ezio picks up a body, the fists will automatically become selected.
*When you successfully disarm a guard and continue to use his weapon, the icon at the bottom left hand of the screen will be the fist icon.
*Despite seemingly lethal actions, targets will merely appear to be in a subdued state and will not be counted as a death, thus enabling Ezio to "kill" civilians. However, during missions these lethal actions will count as a kill to the person that is struck by one. In addition, picking up a body in this subdued state and dropping them a short distance, will cause them to die.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, The Metal Cestus is now automatically equipped when Ezio buys the Climb Leap Glove (6100 florins) from Leonardo da Vinci.
Richard I of England (8 September 1157 - 6 April 1199), or Richard the Lionheart, was the king of England from 1189 to his death in 1199. He was the leader of the Crusader army during the Third Crusade, and was considered a great military leader and warrior. The Saracens called him "Melek-Ric" or "Malek al-Inkitar" (King of England).

Biography
Background
At the beginning of Assassin's Creed, Richard and his army have just taken the port city of Acre. His ultimate goal is to lead his army into the city of Jerusalem so that he can free the Holy Land in the name of the Christian faith.

With a base of operations established in Acre, the Crusaders prepare to march south. However, Saladin, leader of the Islamic army, currently rules the city of Jerusalem. Stinging from his army’s defeat at Acre, he will not allow Richard to humiliate him again. The Muslim forces are massing in the ruins of Arsuf, intending to ambush the Crusaders and prevent them from reaching Jerusalem. These war maneuvers have left the rest of the Holy Land wide open. While Richard and Saladin battle one another, the men left to govern in their stead have begun taking advantage of their new found positions of power. Exploitation, manipulation, and provocation rule the day.

Richard is completely unaware of his men's intentions by being so involved in this war against Saladin. Richard's only goal is to reclaim the Holy City of Jerusalem in the name of God and for Christians. When he argues with William, he reminds him that he made a promise to God to fight for the Crusader army.

Assassin's Creed
King Richard appears in the first Assassin's Creed as the leader of the Crusader Army who is fighting Saladin in the Holy Land, and has decided to attempt to take back Jerusalem for Christianity. Several of his lieutenants are Robert de Sable, Grand Master of the Templars, Garnier de Naplouse, Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William of Montferrat, Regent lord of Acre and Sibrand, Grand Master of the Knights Teutonic.

Richard the Lionheart makes a brief appearance during two missions in the game - first when he is seen arguing with William, and then, near the end of the game at Arsuf, where he personally confronts Altaïr. He was unaware of the Templars' plan to betray him by using the Piece of Eden and conquering the Holy Land in the Templar name. After Altaïr had assassinated everyone but Robert, Robert attempted to convince Richard to ally himself with Saladin against the Assassins, their common enemies. Altaïr learned of Robert's plans and personally rode to Arsuf to tell Richard of the Templars' betrayal.

After a fierce battle with Saracen and Crusader soldiers, he found King Richard, Robert and other elite soldiers of the army. When Altaïr told the king of Robert's treason and Robert denying it, Richard didn't know who to trust after Altaïr asked Richard if he was actually truly surprised by his subjects' plan of betrayal: he wasn't, but he still didn't trust Altaïr. He let "the Lord" decide who was the one who told the truth, by letting Altaïr and Robert fight each other to see which one had "God's support". Altaïr's efficiency with the Hidden Blade proved superior to the Templar's sword skills, and King Richard believed him. They discussed the politics and philosophy of war and peace, in which Richard told Altaïr he wasn't ready for peace with Saladin yet, before Altaïr went back to Masyaf to engage in combat with Al Mualim.

Characteristics and personality
He fought like an uncaged lion!

Richard is a man strong in faith, and relies on God for crucial decisions. He does, however, seem tolerant towards non-believers, as Altaïr denying the help of God over his victory against Robert did not trouble him.

However, Richard is a strong military leader, and isn't afraid to use his sword to answer his problems. Richard scored a major victory for the Crusader army by capturing Acre. Later, towards the end of the game, Richard is to do battle against Saladin at the Battle of Arsuf. When confronted by Altaïr about Robert's betrayal, he relies on God to help decide who to believe. He decides the best way to believe which one is telling the truth, in combat, saying "Surely God will side with one whose cause is righteous!"

Richard believes that mankind cannot ever change. In his mind, the only way for him to bring peace is for his men to crush the enemy: Saladin and the Saracens. Richard was given the name "Lionheart" because of his kindness to his prisoners and because he was fierce in combat.

Despite being the King of England, Richard speaks with a French accent. This is due to the fact the historical figure was brought up in France by his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The real Richard, in fact, spoke entirely in French, knowing only a few English words.
