Agreed - characters fell flat, so many questions were left unanswered, Desmond's face was weird and Altair's story and voice acting were terrible. I actually had a good laugh the first time he opened his mouth - I swear he even had a lisp. Now, if you're going to leave five seals and make it such hell to get to them, at least leave some interesting or INFORMING memories that actually contribute to something SOMEWHERE. "What is he trying to tell me?" asks Ezio at one stage. Not a clue, Ez. Not a clue.
And how did Altair make them? HOW?
I'd have to say I did quite like the ending - it was super dramatic and fun to watch. However, the words that came with it were boring as hell. There was nothing 'revelationary' or smart or life changing about it. I think we'd pretty much all figured out what was going to on by Brotherhood and what we needed to hear went unanswered: "How do the Templars and Assassin's fit into this?"
Ok, maybe don't drop the bomb on us all at once, but maybe a hint? A little clue to make us want to jump into the next game RIGHT NOW? There was no build up to the 'grand ending', so [spoiler] when Desmond woke up with the words, "I know what what we have to do" (what I presumed was supposed to be a cliffhanger), it was all, "Cool story, bro," from my end. I don't know - they could've done so much more with... everything. But overall, like you said, even though not as great as its predecessors it was good fun and I would recommend it.
And why is Ezio never surprised by alien-tech?

Cahin (died 1503) was a Templar and a corrupt French nobleman, who dressed in the costume of a harlequin clown. He was the brother of Caha, the Hellequin, and an individual hired by Cesare Borgia.

His genetic memories were later used by the Templar company Abstergo Industries, for the training of their Animus recruits, under the title of the Harlequin.

Around 1497, Cahin and Caha performed together, so as to lure an assigned target - a foreigner with some claim to royal blood - into the open. As Caha distracted their audience by juggling her daggers, Cahin slipped away and stabbed the man through his chair.

In the chaos that followed, Cahin, Caha, and their ally, Fiora Cavazza, finished off the rest of the guests.

In 1503, Fiora was betrayed by Cesare Borgia, and defected to his enemies, the Assassins, for her revenge. That year, she lead a team of them to pursue Cahin and Caha, who were performing on the streets of Rome.

As Caha realized their presence, she threw a smoke bomb into the crowd. As the audience scattered, Cahin attempted to escape, but was cornered by several of the Assassins. He drew a slender dagger to defend himself, agilely dodging his enemies' rapiers, but in time, was killed by four of them.

Enraged by her brother's death, Caha attempted to avenge him by attacking Fiora alone. However, she finally yielded, and made her way over to Cahin's body, where she sat cradling him and sobbing. Unbeknownst to her, she was approached from behind by an Assassin, who killed her by shooting a single crossbow bolt into her head.
Trivia
*Cahin's and Caha's names are based on the French phrase "cahin caha," meaning "willy nilly."
*In Brotherhood, five Harlequins can be found in five permanent locations near the waterfronts. For the player to receive the "Clowning Around" achievement Ezio must beat up all five. If the player stands near them for long enough they will attack and under the use of Eagle Vision will glow gold.
