The French Assassins were the Brotherhood of Assassins located in France. They were most notable for the involvement in the public disbanding of the Templar Order, and later worked to prevent the Templars from infiltrating the Royal Court.

History
Destruction of the Templars
Early in the 14th century, the Assassins manipulated King Philip IV of France, in order to destroy the Templars. With the help of Pope Clement V, who was sympathetic to the Assassin cause, the Templars were branded as heretics, and their stronghold attacked by the King's forces in 1307. The Grand Master of the Templars, Jacques de Molay, was captured during the attack and put to death by fire, along with sixty other Templars. However, unbeknownst to the Assassins, nine Templar leaders had gone underground and continued their work in secrecy, despite the public disbanding of their Order.

Working with the Italian Brotherhood
In the early 16th century, King Louis XII left Paris and quarreled with Ferdinand II over the ownership of Naples, leaving his foreign ministers in charge. However, the King was unaware of their ties to the Borgia, and it allowed them to target the religious reformist Desiderius Erasmus.

To escape the plague, Erasmus planned to hire a carriage out of town, though the Templars disguised themselves as travelers and offered him a ride. With Erasmus' life in danger, the French Assassins and a team of Ezio Auditore da Firenze's Italian apprentices tracked them down, and with coordinated shots, killed all of the guards. After rescuing Erasmus, he told them that the Templars were holding another Assassin captive.

Following this, the Assassins tried to find their Brother, who had been captured by the men working for the Borgia. A group of Italian Assassins sent from Rome by Ezio were able to receive information from corrupted ministers about the Assassin's whereabouts, and tracked down Archbishop Georges d'Amboise, before interrogating him. He revealed the names of the ministers associated with the Templars, whom the Assassins later disposed of.

After that, the Italian Assassins rescued the French Assassin from the manor he was held in, but he eventually succumbed to his wounds. However, he informed his Brothers that he had only revealed false information to his torturers. He also warned his rescuers to be wary of the Orsini family, who had ties to the Templars.

In 1511, King Louis XII acted on Marseille's threats of secession motivated by the French Assassins, and ordered his army to banish all Assassins from the city. Aided by Ottoman Assassins sent from Constantinople by Ezio Auditore, the combined Assassin force hindered the army's efforts, though without violence.

American and French Revolutions
In the early 18th century, the Assassin Council sent the French Assassin John de la Tour to the Thirteen Colonies. In 1740, de la Tour became acquainted with Achilles Davenport, who was sent by the Mentor of the Caribbean Assassins, Ah Tabai. The former soon became the Mentor of the growing Colonial Assassins.

During France's involvement in the American Revolutionary War, the Assassin William de Saint-Prix was sent to aid the Thirteen Colonies. During the French Revolution, the Assassins aimed to prevent needless deaths, but otherwise wanted to avoid involving themselves, believing the people had the right to make their own mistakes and learn from them. However, they became concerned that an outside force was influencing the revolution.

Assassin-Templar truce
By 1789, Grand Master François de la Serre sought to establish a truce between the Parisian Rite of the Templar Order and the French Assassins. The Assassin Mentor, Mirabeau, supported the idea, which led to a time of relative peace between two factions. However, the truce came to an end with the death of de la Serre at the hands of Charles Gabriel Sivert and the Roi des Thunes, on the orders of a former Templar and a Sage, François-Thomas Germain. De la Serre's adopted son, Arno Dorian, was accused of the murder and imprisoned in the Bastille, while Germain was elected as the new Grand Master, and began working with his supporters to stage a revolution in France.

During his imprisonment, Arno met an Assassin, Pierre Bellec, who offered him a chance to settle the score with de la Serre's killers, by joining the Assassin Order. Following the escape from the Bastille during a storming of it by the citizens, Arno sought out the Assassins, and was inducted into the Brotherhood. Over the course of the French Revolution, due to the fact the truce between the two factions was no longer honored, Arno assassinated key Templar figures in his pursuit of Germain himself.

Eventually, Arno brought Élise de la Serre, the daughter of Grand Master de la Serre, before the French Assassin Council, in order to gain information on Germain and try to re-establish a truce between the two factions. However, in his fanaticism, Bellec opposed the idea and poisoned Mirabeau in an attempt to discredit Élise and prevent peace from being achieved. However, Arno discovered the deception and confronted Bellec at Sainte-Chapelle, killing his former master after a duel. Élise herself continued to work with the Assassins for a time, however, when Germain and Maximilien de Robespierre managed to execute King Louis XVI, due to Arno's failure to assassinate Germain during the execution by opting to save Élise from his followers instead, she broke her ties with the Assassins.

In another stroke of misfortune, Arno himself was expelled from the Assassin Order, owing to his rash actions and his disregard for obtaining the Assassin Council's permission to strike at a target. However, after a prolonged period of absence from the Assassins, it is evidenced that Arno was reassigned his place with them, as he managed to obtain a set of robes reserved only for Master Assassins.

Liam O'Brien (c. 1729 – March 1760) was a member of the Assassin Order operating in the British Colonies during the Seven Years' War. A childhood friend of Shay Cormac, Liam was responsible for bringing Shay into the Brotherhood. In spite of Liam being a few years older than him, Shay formed a brotherly bond with him, even though Liam was wiser and more experienced.

Biography
Early life
Liam was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A family of Irish immigrants, the O'Briens struggled to survive until they moved to New York, where Liam's father began to work for a shipping merchant. Eventually, Liam joined his father at work, loading ships bound for England. It was at work where he first met a young Shay Cormac, and the two became fast friends. Liam looked after the younger Shay, who lived in a rough neighbourhood and had a knack for getting himself into trouble.

Over the next years, Liam became aware of his employers' growing wealth, even as his fellow workers remained underpaid and mistreated by their superiors. Eventually, the tensions rose to a breaking point, and Liam recruited several of his co-workers in a plot to rob their employer and distribute the money among themselves. However, in the middle of the hiest, the group was caught, and Liam was forced to kill a man in self-defense. Wishing to protect his son, Liam's father took the blame for the murder and was executed by the authorities.

Building the Brotherhood
In the coming years, Liam drifted from one job to the next and continued to rob the city's richer citizens, sending the money to his aging mother. He also distanced himself from his fellow friends, including Shay. In 1738, he met Achilles Davenport, who gave him small tasks and errands to perform. Over time, Achilles's influence over Liam grew, and Liam looked to the older man as a teacher. Eventually, in 1743, Achilles inducted Liam into the Assassin Order as his first student, who in turn helped recruit the other members of the Colonial Brotherhood, such as Chevalier de la Vérendrye, Kesegowaase, and Hope Jensen.

In 1748, Liam reconnected with Shay, who had just lost his father, and managed to get Shay back on his feet. The two became more inseprablee than ever, and Shay was soon included in the list of inductees. At that point, Achilles tasked Liam with keeping an eye over Shay, just as he had years ago.

Biography
Born to an Austrian mother and a French Assassin father, Arno was raised in a noble household in Versailles. Due to his upbringing, he was well educated, having access to tutors and various books.

However, in 1776, when Arno was eight, his father was murdered. He was subsequently adopted by François de la Serre, the Grand Master of the French Templars, out of respect for his enemy. He raised Arno alongside his own daughter, Élise. Wishing not to corrupt the memory of Arno's biological father and bring his pupil to the Templar Order, François kept his Templar involvement a secret from the young boy.

Despite this, the Grand Master died some years later in mysterious circumstances, murdered during a coup d'etat orchestrated by another Templar, for which Arno was framed. Wracked with guilt and blaming himself, Arno sought out the Assassins to find redemption, through discovering his adoptive father's murderer and the motivations leading to his death, as well as to help those suffering injustice.

Personality and characteristics
With his troubled past, Arno set out on a quest to find redemption, using this goal to help others in the turbulent time of the French Revolution. As a newcomer to the Assassins, he was prone to questioning their typical approach and age-old beliefs, but was aided in the field by his stealthy and ruthless nature.

Arno was witty and charismatic but also no-nonsense, which fed into his sharp sense of humor, falling back on it whenever he felt emotionally vulnerable.
Equipment and skills
Arno often wore a dark blue hooded coat, waistcoat, and breeches with leather gaiters, rather than the stockings which were fashionably popular in his time, though he was not adverse to altering his outfit to blend in or gain an advantage in combat.

In regards to weaponry, Arno used the Phantom Blade, a Hidden Blade equipped with a wrist-mounted crossbow capable of firing a variety of darts, as well as a variety of different swords and a multi-barreled pistol. A dynamic leader and a skilled swordsman, he stopped at nothing to uncover the truth about the forces controlling the Revolution for their own gain.

Romantic life
Adopted by François de la Serre, Arno grew up along with the latter's boisterous daughter, Élise. Viewing her more as a friend than a sister, his feelings for Élise eventually graduated to a reciprocal love as they matured.
Trivia
*Arno's name is a derivative of German Arnold and French Arnaud. Its old German origin is Arenwald, meaning "eagle power", from arn "eagle" and wald "power" or "governing". Victor is Latin for "conqueror", while Dorian is a Greek name meaning "gifted".
*Arno is the third of four playable characters not to be related to Desmond Miles, with the first being Aveline de Grandpré, the second being Adéwalé and the fourth being Shay Cormac.
*Arno is also the second playable Assassin to develop a romantic attraction towards a Templar, the first being Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad with Maria Thorpe.
