Guards are the common opponents to an assassin throughout the Assassin's Creed series.

Assassin's Creed
Hashshashin!
During the course of Assassin's Creed, there are two types of guards: Soldiers and Archers. The archers are mostly the same, but there are three ranks of soldiers. All guards are armed with swords (with varying styles).
*The ordinary soldiers don't wear helmets (Muslims wear turbans) and are only equipped with leather armor or light Lamellar armor. Guard archers are on par with ordinary ones except they are only found on rooftops, wear a hood, and use bows for a ranged attack.
*Guard Sergeants (or elite guards) have helmets, the Crusader variant wear chain mail with a tunic, and Mujahideen Sergeants posess medium Lamellar armor.
*Guard Captains are the most powerful guard besides the Templar Knight. The Muslim Captains wear Baidah helmets and heavy Lamellar armor where Crusader captains are equipped with chain mail and varying knight helms.
*Templar Knights are a special version of guard where only 60 are found in game. They are similar to the Crusader guard captain except with higher stats and the fact that they only wear one version of helmet which appears bloodstained. They will also provoke a fight when they see Altair, no matters what his nortoriety level is. Strangely enough, Templar Knights can be found in many places, including Muslim cities.

All Muslim guards speak Arabic, ordinary Crusader soldiers and archers speak English, Crusader Captains and Sergeants speak French or German, and the Templars speak all of the dialects(except Arabic).

The guards in Masyaf, despite being marked as an ally via Eagle Vision, function exactly like normal ones. They are equipped in robes similar to Altair's, but they only have a sword and their skirts are shorter. They have all five fingers, indicading that, though members of the order, they are not assassins themselves, instead serving as guardians.

Assassin's Creed II
Assassino!

In Assassin's Creed II, there are five types of enemy guards:

Regular Guards
Those are the "standard" type of guard which can be found almost everywhere on the ground. However, they use a large variety of swords and maces. Those regular troops are divided into three ranks themselves: Militia, Elite and Leaders.
*Thugs are people hired by Vieri de' Pazzi to attack Ezio. While not officially or technically guards, they function in a remarkably similar manner. They will attack Ezio even if he is Incognito, and fight only with fists. After assassinating Uberto Alberti, they can no longer be found in game, except for the Courier mission Casanova.

:
*Militia is the weakest rank. They wear no armor, and can be easily killed (with one counter-kill). They are also the most easily frightened during combat as after battles they are the first ones to retreat.

:

:

*
*:Elite guards are stronger, wear a moderate amount of armor, and need three counter-kills to be defeated. Elites are also more courageous than Militias.

:

:

*Leaders are the best fighters and most tenacious of all the regular soldiers. They wear slightly more armor that their Elite counterpart. The Leaders will last slightly longer than Elites during Ezio's counter-attacks. They also hardly give up their weapons, making them harder to disarm than the others.

The Regular Guards are not especially agile, but can climb up to the rooftops in order to follow Ezio (while not as fast as him). Also, they can recognize Ezio sitting on a bench, but can be assassinated before they recognize him and spread word of his presence.

Seekers
The Seekers, also called "Paranoid" are one of the new special guard types. They are constantly looking in hiding spots (such as the haystacks, benches, and crowds) and checking them (although Ezio can assassinate the seeker from his hiding spot if that happens). They are armed with long spears or halberds, giving them an increased reach in combat. Seekers, like most of the other guards, wear armor. The armor they wear is slightly more than a Leader-ranked Standard, but less than a Brute. When unarmed they will occasionally approach Ezio from behind and then hold him while the other guards assault him.

Agiles
One of the new guard archetypes is the Agile, which, as the name suggests, is a very fast, light-armored enemy. They run faster than Ezio and also have the Free Run ability which can lead to chase sequences. They wield small weapons such as daggers and other short blades.

Brutes
The Brutes are heavily armored and equipped (two-handed weapons such as heavy swords and axes). Their armor covers almost every part of their bodies, making them tough to bring down, but also making them cumbersome and slow. They are not very intelligent, and won't be able to tell Ezio from anyone else in a crowd. When deflecting a short weapon, they will not take damage (while all other guards do), but can still be damaged with a short weapon. A good way to make short work of them is to disarm them and counterattack, because they are very easy to disarm. Brutes have two types of attack: one quick, and one that begins with a wind-up. The latter attack cannot be countered, and must be dodged, while the former can be countered. You must possess a Brute's weapon to counter the wind-up attacks of another Brute.

Archers
The Archers are guards that patrol and defend the rooftops. They are armed with bows and swords (sometimes maces instead of swords), and warn Ezio on sight to leave the place, no matter the notoriety. Approaching them will force them to draw their weapon out and commence a fight. Archers are seemingly just Militia-ranked Standards with the capability of attacking at a distance with their trusty longbows. While Florentine and Tuscan Archers can be killed with a single Throwing Knife, archers in the other cities and regions (such as Venice and Romagna) will need two Throwing Knives to be taken down. Since they are almost always on the rooftops on buildings, Archers are fairly easy to dispatch in melee combat as they have the skill and hardiness of a Militia-ranked standard, making them easy to kill. Another good way to dispatch them is to simply throw them off the roof, which will instantly kill the Archer if they fall more than two stories or if they land in water.
William of Montferrat is the fifth target ordered by Al Mualim for Altaïr to assassinate. He is found in the rich district of Acre.

Description
William serves King Richard as Regent Lord of Acre, and spends most of his time training and preparing his men for the "coming war". However, few of his soldiers have actually been sent to join Richard at Arsuf, leading people to wonder what "war" he's referring to. It is implied that he was appointed by Richard to put pressure on his son Conrad who has clashed with the King.

William always demands the best from his men, and is quick to point out flaws, while being reluctant to give praise. He is often shouting, and rarely sounds happy. He is also set in the belief that might makes right, and spends countless hours training his men.

The Assassins originally believed that William planned to murder Richard and turn Acre over to Conrad, but to Altaïr's shock, William denounced his son with surprisingly vehement hatred, sneering "My son is an arse, unfit to lead his host let alone a kingdom." His true purpose was apparently to turn the city over to the Templars, and for this reason he had been taking food from the people, with the aim of insuring it would be rationed properly during "the lean times" (presumably he expected resistance to the Templar's plans), and by training and disciplining his men and people unmercifully, he hoped to instill in them the value of discipline and order, to prepare for the new world.

Death
William of Montferrat was assassinated within his personal quarters located in the Kings Citadel, shortly after a visit from King Richard of England, giving Altaïr the opportunity he needed to get close enough to kill him. The assassin managed to stealthily penetrate into the lord's citadel fortress, and quickly put an end to his life. After observing William's and Richard's heated discussion safely under the cloak of the noble crowd, Altaïr pierced the fortress in search of his assassination target. He finally came to a cornered keep, a small fortress within a fortress. Altaïr listened as William belittled his men with razor barbed insults intended on encouraging them for better performance and stronger sense of duty. Silently approaching and skilfully eliminating archers, Altaïr finally moved into position. Remaining highly in tune with the surrounding environment, Altaïr patiently watched and waited for William to perfectly position himself for his own death. As William continued his speech and slowly paced toward the scaffold, Altaïr quickly dropped onto it, focused on his target, and before anyone even began to take notice of the impending danger leaped towards William, his Hidden Blade fully extended. Even as William took notice of the descending assassin it was too late, for by the time he realized it he was already being forced onto his back, and his throat was punctured severely by the assassin's steel Hidden Blade. Williams public assassination is recorded as the fifth major public figure to be publicly assassinated by Altaïr, and his death is the second within Acre.

Final Words
Altaïr: Rest now. Your schemes are at an end.

William: What do you know of my work?

Altaïr: I know that you were going to murder Richard, and claim Acre for your son, Conrad.

William (laughing): For Conrad!? My son is an arse, unfit to lead his host, let alone a kingdom! And Richard? He also knows no better... blinded as he is by faith in the insubstantial. Acre does not belong to either of them.

Altaïr: Then who?

William: The city belongs to its people!

Altaïr: How can you claim to speak for the citizens!? You stole their food, disciplined them without mercy, forced them into service under you!

William: Everything I did, I did to prepare them for the "New World". Stole their food? No, I took possession, so that when the lean times came, it might be rationed properly. (coughes chokingly). Look around: my district is without crime- save those committed by you and your ilk!- and as for the conscription, they were not being trained to fight: they were being taught the merits of order and discipline. These things are hardly evil.

Altaïr: No matter how noble you believe your intentions, these actions are cruel and cannot continue!

William (laughing): We'll see how sweet they are, the fruits of your labours. You do not free the cities as you believe, but rather damn them! And in the end, you'll have only yourself to blame...you, who speak of good intentions.

Behind the scenes
Jade Raymond, producer of the game, revealed that originally they planned to have Conrad of Montferrat in the game. Their researchs indicated that he wasn't killed in 1191, but William, a relative to Conrad, was located in Acre in the same period. In order to maintain the historical accuracy of the project, Will was inserted into the game instead.

Trivia
*The map used for William's stronghold and the area where his assassination in Assassin's Creed takes place is re-used in Assassin's Creed II in Desmond's dream sequence. When Altair is chasing Maria, the tower is which the sequence ends in is the very same above William's quarters.
* The choice of William as an target for Altair was probably inspired by the fact that historically, his son, Conrad, was murdered by the Assassins in Tyre in real-life.
}}The Crusaders was a coalition army of numerous monastaic/military Christian knights who have declared war and set out on a Crusade to the Holy Land. To forcefully reclaim it from the Muslim Saracens in the name of Christianity. Their leader is King of England Richard the Lionheart. They appear in the city of Acre,Kingdom, and Arsuf. The coalition is composed of Crusader Knightly Orders like: Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, and Teutonic Knights. You will also see Richard the Lionheart's Crusaders.

Crusader knights
Lionheart Crusader soldiers can be found throughout the Kingdom, and chain district of Acre, (where they are always Informed and very easily provoked due to the war) loyal to King Richard.

Crusader knights are commonly mistaken for Templar knights. This is because of their similar coloration of uniforms. Lionheart Crusader knights, however, can be distinguished from Templar Knights by their crest- Templars have a red cross whereas Lionhearts have a prancing lion as a crest.

King Richard
Richard the Lionheart
Richard I of England, commonly known as Richard the Lionheart, is the leader of the Crusaders. He makes only 2 appearances in the game, one in the city of Acre, having a conversation with William of Montferrat just before he rides off to battle and another in Arsuf before and after the battle with Robert De Sable.

In Battle
Low Ranking Soldier
The lowest ranking soldiers are the most common Crusaders, having no complicated armor. They're dressed in red and white. They speak English. The Low Ranking Crusaders can't grab, counter, or dodge Altaïr (only blocking with their sword), cannot break Altaïr's grabs, and are dispatched easily. These soldiers can be killed by just one sword/short blade counter, in which Altair will end up impaling the soldier, instead of just throwing him away from himself. Of course, like most guards in the game, these soldiers can be killed with just one Hidden Blade counter. Low Ranking Soldiers are also known to be frightened the most during battle, especially when Altaïr pulls off intense moves. Because of this, they will usually either run away after their comrades are slain, or get on their knees and beg for mercy. The quickest way of doing that is killing their higher ranked compatriots.

Middle Ranking Soldier
The middle ranking soldiers are the second most common types of Crusaders. They also speak French or German. These soldiers have some armor worn (heavy chain mail with Plate armor, vambraces and shoulder badges), unlike their lower counterparts and seem to have a degree of combat experience. Because of this, they are harder to kill, and may take a few more hits to kill, unless the player is using the Hidden Blade to counter. These soldiers can grab Altaïr by his robe and throw him, which makes these soldiers a much more deadly adversary than low ranking soldiers. If Altaïr continuously slashes at these foes, they will either counter Altaïr, or dodge him, and can either follow up the dodge by rushing back with a sword slash, or just staying back. These soldiers also can tolerate one sword/short blade counter, though a second one should work beautifully. Those skilled with the Hidden Blade can finish it with one counter. Altaïr can try to grab these soldiers, but there's a chance they will break his grab, and Altaïr will end up on the floor. Low ranked players (those that don't have counter) should chance a throw, then wail on the soldier when he's down. These soldiers CAN and WILL run away if frightened enough by Altaïr, but have a bigger chance of sticking around and fighting than the lower class soldiers.

High Ranking Soldier
The high ranking soldiers are the least common types of Crusaders (save the Templars). These soldiers also wear red and white, but have a kind of robe on, a LOT of armor (also chain mail), and a knight helm. Like the middle-rankers, they speak French or German. They are easily the strongest (again, save the Templar Knight) type of soldier. They are usually found leading a small troop of lesser soldiers on patrol. These soldiers can take two counters before dying or you can use the Hidden Blade counter. They also have practice at the fine art of countering. There is a very high chance Altaïr's slashes to be countered, usually ending up with Altaïr being smacked across the face and falling to the ground. These soldiers also have a huge chance of breaking grabs, and dodging attacks. You should focus on their underlings (at least until you get the defence break move) and wait for them to attack (where you can soften them with a counter) .These soldiers rarely flee from battle, usually fighting to the death.

Templar Knight
The toughest non-boss unit that is found in game. They are not actually aligned with the Crusaders' goals. The Templar Knight is similar to the High Ranking Crusader Soldier (see above) except the Templars have Plate Mail Greaves, wear a Templar tunic, and the helm and sword are usually bloodstained. The Templar speaks all three Crusader dialects (English, French, and German). There are sixty Templar Knights lurking in secluded spots throughout the entirety of Outremer (besides Masyaf), they are very hostile and will attack you on sight. While usually found alone, the fight could easily attract extra guards or worse, ruin a mission. The Templar Knight is not much more durable than a high ranking soldier, but is more aggressive and you should be wary of one at all times. The Templar Knight is quite aggressive and will relentlessly assault you and will often use defence break. He will also counter most of your grabs and attacks. As a result, you should pray you have counter and a medium size health bar, 3 counters should be enough to finish the fight. If you don't flee to the high ground, then try to get the Templar to fall off. Either way, you can chance a grab, if the Templar ends up on the floor, then use the Hidden Blade to finish him. When a Templar confronts you, usually the other guards will give you room for your duel, but don't even think about trying to get the Templar to flee.
