Throwing knives were small blades that could kill unarmored enemies and rooftop sentries. Assassins used them to either injure enemies, or take them out from a distance.

Middle Ages
Assassins of the High Middle Ages were permitted to use throwing knives upon reaching the fourth rank. The knives also seemed to be one of the most powerful weapons after the Hidden Blade; with a single, accurate hit resulting in a kill on all targets but major Templars.

If ever an Assassin ran out of knives, he could get more by either pickpocketing thugs or defeating them in a fistfight, or by returning to either an Assassins' Bureau or Masyaf.

The amount of knives Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad could hold increased at certain ranks, wherein he obtained a knife belt. Each knife belt could hold up to five knives, and were kept at his waist, left boot, and right shoulder. These belts were obtained at the fourth, seventh, and tenth ranks respectively.

Renaissance
Throwing knives were also used by Assassins of the Renaissance era, though they were not quite as effective, and could not normally cause a kill in a single hit; particularly with the improved armor possessed by high-ranked guards. To compensate, Ezio Auditore da Firenze could hold up to twenty-five knives at a time, all of which he sheathed at his waist.

Throwing knives could be bought from any of the city blacksmiths for 50 florins each. Extra sheaths for knives could be purchased at tailor shops.

Advanced use
Though initially only throwing one knife at a time, Ezio learned to throw several at once from the combat instructor at Monteriggioni.

This special attack allowed Ezio to throw three knives mid-combat, effectively dispatching up to three enemies. Despite taking a longer time to aim and use, the ability allowed an instant kill on any targeted enemy.

Later, upon traveling to Rome and becoming a Master Assassin, Ezio was able to throw multiple knives at enemies, even when not engaged in battle. He was able to adjust the number of knives thrown at a time, one for each enemy in range.

Furthermore, Ezio was also able to dual-wield throwing knives alongside his short blade, much as Altaïr did. This allowed him to more quickly switch between long and short-ranged attacks.

Golden Age of Piracy
During the 18th century, Edward Kenway occasionally used daggers obtained from enemy Scouts as improvised throwing knives. However, he usually only carried one on his person, favoring the use of firearms, blowpipe darts, and rope darts over the throwing knives.

Edward reserved the throwing knife for situations where he was out of ammunition for other weapons or wished to conseve it, as the knife could be picked up multiple times after use. He was also able to perform a counter-attack with the knife after disarming a Scout, by throwing the knife at the enemy for an instant kill.

Modern times
In Abstergo Industries, throwing knives served as an ability that its recruits could use while training in their respective Animi. However, the knives used were always non-lethal, and could only temporarily slow down or unbalance an opponent.

Trivia
;Assassin's Creed
*During the Animus loading sequence in Assassin's Creed, the player could select the throwing knives and throw an infinite number of them.
*On the Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed, the achievement "Eagle's Eye" could be unlocked by killing 75 guards with throwing knives.
*There was a glitch after unlocking the short blade for the first time. In the Animus loading sequence, the player could use throwing knives even if they had not yet been unlocked.

;Assassin's Creed II
*When not locked onto a target, Ezio would throw a knife in the last direction he walked toward. Certain targets would not run unless Ezio entered a particular zone around them. If Ezio remained out of this zone and threw knives using the described method, he could easily kill the target.
*Even after using all throwing knives, they were still visible on Ezio's knife belt.
*An additional five throwing knives could be purchased through Uplay for 20 Units.
*It took two throwing knives to kill a guard who was alert, but only one to kill a guard to whom Ezio was invisible.
**Venice and Forlì were exceptions, where it took two knives regardless.

;Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
*Edward can only carry a single throwing knife at a time and they cannot be bought in shops or crafted. Instead they are obtained from Scout either via counter disarm or picked up. They cannot be aim and can only be used on enemies in a certain range but it will kill any enemy instantly. There is no way to increase Edward's ability to carry more throwing knives, however this weakness is offset by the ability to pick and reuse a throwing knives. Because of these traits the throwing knife is treated as more auxiliary weapon.
*One of the Abstergo Fighter Challenges, is to disarm and kill 3 Scouts with their own weapon (which introduces a unique method of dispatching Scouts).
*In situations where Edward is completely disarmed (for example, after his capture and time in a jail cell), he will still be equipped with a throwing knife if he had one in the previous sequence.
;Other
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, the design for throwing knives was altered. In the first game, it was simply a flat knife, whereas in Bloodlines, it possessed a cylindrical hilt and a four-sided blade.
*A throwing knife from Rodrigo Borgia nearly killed Giovanni Auditore in Rome.
*Giovanni Auditore only carried two throwing knives, on his chest, and it is unexplained if this was due to his preference, or to his skill (or lack thereof) with the weapon.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, regardless of the throwing knife capacity of the knife belt, there was no visible knife belt present.
**Oddly, the knife belt only appeared when the character was in a state of loading (such as when Ezio glowed white during an armor switch or clothes dyeing), or within the Animus Virtual Training Program.

115.64.136.221: /* Defense */

Some tips I learned over time...

Combat
(or, Holy Land Self-Defense: A Primer)
Defense
Always be in defensive mode, unless you really intend on attacking/running at that moment. If you forget, you'll take more damage than you can spare.

Countering
...is a useful way to dispatch an opponent, or give yourself some breathing room. Either way, use this every chance you get. But, uh, time it right, or you'll earn a smack from a sword.

Throwdown
Grab and throw is useful 3 ways: Breathing space, since 1 guard is easier then 2; taking advantage of your environment, say, into a merchant stand or scaffold, or throwing off of a ledge or into the Poisonous Water of Doom; and finally, for throwing them to the ground. Course, when you throw them to the ground, it's a good idea to kill them afterwards. The hidden blade does wonders for this...especially against those damn Templars (21/60 on 11/18).

Running
(or, crap there's too many of them time to go!)

*Sprint. There's no reason not to.
*When running, don't run into people. It's a really good way to fall flat on your ass.
*Rooftops are empty, and have gardens to hide in. Use 'em.
**...but remember to kill the pesky archers while you're up there. Practice quickly taking them out with a throwing knife. And, if you've got the jump on one, use the blade. It saves a knife, and they usually don't block it.
**Oh, and guards can climb up. But they do it slowly...so, bottleneck them and hack and slash away with your sword as they struggle up. Less guards, and easier to get away.
**Grab if you don't think you'll make that last jump. It saves a lot of trouble, and you'll avoid awkward stares when you land, even if you don't die.
*If you are climbing, climb fast. Guards are excellent shots with rocks. Gravity hurts still, no matter how cool you are. If you read that and said, "but I can't climb any faster without something to climb onto!", consider choosing a better position to scale. Scaffolds are an excellent choice. In fact, I would like to personally thank the man who included them- not only for climbing, but also for getting rid of a guard or two the easiest way I know of. Besides the Poisonous Water of Doom, that is. I'd like to kick the guy who decided to have the water be deadly, by the way.

On Entering a City for the Second Time
(or, how to renew your visa)

When you re-enter a city for your second assassination, first head for the Assassins Bureau. Listen to what the other assassin says. He will tell you of some locations you should search for information. But, the only thing you need to glean from the conversation is a cardinal direction- north, south, east, west. Head for the district in that area. Once you are decently within it judging by the map (which you should be using), head for a rooftop. Look for a tall building, perhaps even with a eagle flying over it. Head on over, climb it to it's tallest point (remember that many of the Vantage Points have nearly identical structure) and do the Batman thing. Suddenly, your map will explode with every other high point in the district, and maybe even some helpful interrogation/save a civilian missions will show up.
