The '''Siege of Louisbourg''' was a prolonged naval engagement fought between the [[Royal Navy]] and the [[French Navy]] during the [[French and Indian War]], for control of the [[Forts|Fort]] of [[Louisbourg]].

==Background==
After the death of Colonel [[George Monro]], the former [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Shay Cormac]] was formally inducted into the [[Colonial Rite of the Templar Order|Colonial Rite]] of the [[Templars|Templar Order]] by its [[Grand Master]], [[Haytham Kenway]]. After a few days, Cormac and Kenway met in [[New York City|New York]], and after a brief discussion about [[Isu|First Civilization]] [[Temples]], Haytham informed Shay about Assassin activity near the Fort of Louisbourg.

Shay was also informed about the Royal Navy officer and explorer, [[James Cook]], and his usefulness to the Templars, despite the lack of knowledge of the Order's existence on the captain's part. Shay and his quartermaster, [[Christopher Gist]], met with James Cook and Haytham aboard the former's [[Man O' War]], [[HMS Pembroke|HMS ''Pembroke'']]. Cook informed the Templars that a Royal Navy fleet had already set sail for Louisbourg, but the he was worried about the [[France|French]] defenses. Grand Master Kenway insisted on attacking the fort, and eventually convinced Cook to participate. Cook in turn offered command of his [[Ships|ship]] to Shay, for the duration of the battle.

==The battle==
On the day of battle, HMS ''Pembroke'' was approaching Louisbourg, escorted by two [[Frigate|frigates]]. As the ships neared the fort, mortars fired by the French [[Man O' War|Men O' War]] destroyed the escort ships. In response, Shay utilized the HMS ''Pembroke''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s own fire-power to sink the enemy ships.

After a successful retaliation, the ship of Assassin [[Adéwalé]], the ''[[Experto Crede]]'', led several fireships into the fray. Under the advice of Gist, Shay did not attack the Assassin's [[brig]], focusing on the fireships instead. Eventually, the fireships were joined by French reinforcements, but were soon destroyed after British reinforcements arrived. This allowed to Royal Navy, which later arrived with an astonishing 40 Men O' War, to launch an offensive on the fort itself, and capture Louisbourg.

==Aftermath==
The Siege of Louisbourg proved to be the turning point of the Seven Years' War, weakening the French. Adéwalé's interference made him a target for the Templars, which was capitalized on by Shay and Haytham, who tracked down and eliminated him at [[Vieille Carrière]].

He is regarded by many historians to be the most successful pirate of all time, judging by the number of ships taken and the amount of goods stolen. John Roberts was born in 1682 in Castell Newydd Bach. It is commonly assumed that he went to sea around the age of thirteen, eventually becoming an experienced sailor.

===Imprisonment by Templars===
The [[Templars|Templar Order]] located Roberts sometime in 1715, in [[Spain|Spanish]] lands in [[South America]], and subsequently took him to [[Havana]]. The [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Mentor]] [[Ah Tabai]] caught wind of the capture and sent his finest student, [[Duncan Walpole]], to free Roberts and bring him to the Assassin city of [[Tulum]]. However, Walpole had secretly turned traitor to the Brotherhood and abandoned his mission.

Roberts eventually arrived in Havana, where he was imprisoned in the estate of [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]]. Torres, his fellow Templars [[Woodes Rogers]] and [[Julien du Casse]], along with [[Edward Kenway]] – who had killed Walpole and taken his identity – met Roberts at the Havana docks before taking him to the prison.

In transit, he managed to break free when the Templars were attacked by Assassins sent by Ah Tabai, but was chased down by Kenway and escorted to Torres' estate. He was moved later that same day, but escaped soon after and took to the sea.

===Slaving in Kingston and Príncipe===
In 1717, the Templars learned that Roberts had been recaptured by a [[Kingston]]-based [[Slavery|slaver]] named [[Laurens Prins]]. Prins had indeed encountered Roberts, but had actually employed him, allowing him to stay in his Kingston estate while planning to sell him out to the Templars.

Kenway, acting on information given by his fellow pirates, confronted Torres and devised a plan to have the Templar Grand Master meet with Prins in Kingston and lead Kenway to Roberts. However, Prins detected Kenway and the Assassin [[Mary Read]] and managed to flee back to his mansion.

When Kenway infiltrated Prins' estate and killed him in his gardens, Roberts appeared, declaring that Prins had been his employer instead of his jailer. Shooting an alarm bell to alert guards to Kenway's presence, Roberts escaped once more. Afterwards, he took to working aboard a merchant ship of [[Barbados|Barbadian]] origin.

Roberts eventually began working on board a slave ship called the ''[[Princess]]'', [[Captains|captain]]ed by Abraham Plumb; this ship made regular trips between Kingston and the Portuguese colony of [[Príncipe]] roughly every eight weeks. When the ship was captured by the Welsh pirate [[Howell Davis]], Roberts chose to become a pirate himself. During his time sailing with Howell, he served as Navigator and consultant to the captain. On 19 June 1719, Davis was killed in a Templar-orchestrated ambush at Príncipe, forcing Roberts to go into hiding.

Approached by Kenway once again, the two struck a deal: Kenway would free Roberts' imprisoned crew and kill the Templars [[John Cockram]] and [[Josiah Burgess]], in exchange for Roberts leading him to the [[Isu|First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]; Kenway did as he was asked, recapturing the ''Princess'' in the process. Roberts then gave a speech to his crew, declaring his intentions to sail as a pirate, and the two captains returned to the West Indies.

In the following months, Roberts made a name for himself by taking ships and making a fortune. He kept his crew to high standards with an [[Pirate code of Bartholomew Roberts|eleven-part creed]]; it discouraged gambling on the ship, required the men to keep their equipment in good working order, and provided that pirates should live their lives as fully as possible and die before they became weak and old, vulnerable to having their power stripped from them: a philosophy he summed up with the words "a merry life and a short one."

Roberts and Kenway met again off the coast of the [[Yucatán Peninsula]], where they infiltrated a Portuguese camp to steal First Civilization [[Blood vials|crystal vials]] that had been imbued with the blood of both pirates and Templars alike. After completing the heist and commandeering the Portuguese flagship, ''Nosso Senhor da Compreensão'', Roberts renamed her to the ''[[Royal Fortune]]''. Afterwards, Kenway killed his former comrade [[Benjamin Hornigold]], who had allied himself with the Templars, to ensure the pirates were not followed, before meeting Roberts again at [[Long Bay]], on the northern shore of [[Jamaica]]. The two went ashore with four of Roberts's crew in search of the Observatory.

Edward cleared the jungle of its protective [[Guardians]] while Roberts and his crew followed until they reached the Observatory's door. Upon opening it with an incantation, Roberts suddenly shot his four crewmen dead, telling Kenway he did it to save them from the insanity that was sure to follow if they entered the building. However, he believed that Edward could handle the secrets stored within, and instructed him to take up the case of blood vials before they made their way inside.

Roberts informed Kenway of his past as a Sage and his new life as a pirate, including his pirate's creed, as they made their way deeper into the Observatory. He commented on the complex being in much worse condition than what it had been when he last saw it eighty millennia ago, although he still knew how to deactivate the building's security measures once inside.

In the Observatory's antechamber, Roberts showed Kenway exactly what its purpose was, using the blood vials they had taken from the Portuguese and inserting them into a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] set into the centerpiece of a golden armillary sphere. Soon, the machine began to operate, projecting the vision and hearing of the individual whose blood was in the vial - a near perfect method of spying on anyone in the world; this was demonstrated as both Roberts and Kenway surveyed through the eyes and ears of [[Jack Rackham]] and Woodes Rogers.

Although Kenway agreed with Roberts that the Observatory would be too powerful for the Templars to have control of, Roberts had a different plan on how to stop them, by removing the skull and rendering the Observatory inoperable. Though Edward had hoped to work with Roberts and use the device to increase their wealth, the Sage had other ideas, knocking him into the water below. Revealing that he had only used Kenway to get to the Observatory and acquire the Crystal Skull, Roberts declared Edward's usefulness to be at an end and sealed him inside the temple.

Roberts returned to the shore and ordered his crew to subdue the injured Kenway, who made his way out of the Observatory. Though Edward fought back against the pirates, he eventually collapsed from his injuries, just as the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' sailed away. Fearing that he would be too dangerous to keep on his crew, Roberts decided to turn Edward over to the British authorities and collect the large bounty on his head.

Over the next two years Roberts captured hundreds of ships, earning the attention of both the British and [[Spanish Navy|Spanish navies]] as well as the Templars; he was forced to retreat to Príncipe, where he was found by Kenway. Roberts attempted to flee aboard the ''Royal Fortune'', keeping the ''Jackdaw'' at bay with mortar fire and fire barrels, before moving into open waters where Spanish and British forces engaged him.

Eventually the ''Royal Fortune'' was disabled by the ''Jackdaw'' and boarded. There, Bartholomew Roberts and Edward Kenway fought one another, with Kenway emerging the eventual victor, having impaled Roberts with a [[Rope darts|rope dart]].

Roberts first noted the aptness of his motto before remarking that he may have misjudged Kenway, and perhaps he was indeed the one '[[Juno|she]]' had sought. Roberts expressed regret that he did not have the time to open the door to the [[Grand Temple|Temple]], confusing Edward, who demanded he make some sense. Roberts did not elaborate, however, requesting that Edward destroy his body in order to prevent the Templars from gaining anything from it, before succumbing to his injuries. Edward then complied with his final request.

George Monro was born in Clonfin, County Longford, [[Ireland]], to a [[Scotland|Scottish]] military family. His father was Colonel {{Wiki|George Munro, 1st of Auchinbowie|George Munro}}, famous for his victory at the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689. Monro became a lieutenant in Otway's Regiment in 1718, and was eventually inducted into the Templar Order.

By 1750, Monro had been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Around this time, [[Grand Master]] [[Reginald Birch]] had become frustrated with [[Lawrence Washington]]'s lack of progress in the American Colonies. Birch sent Monro to work with Washington, stating that while the Colonel was to be his subordinate, he was still his better in every way. After the deaths of Washington and [[James Wardrop]], Monro worked for [[Haytham Kenway]], who eventually became Grand Master of the Colonial Rite. In 1751, he inducted [[Christopher Gist]] and [[Jack Weeks]] into the Order.

===Working with Shay Cormac===
In 1755, Monro's men rescued the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Shay Cormac]] after he betrayed the Brotherhood and was left for dead by his former comrades. Shay was subsequently taken to the home of [[Barry Finnegan|Barry]] and [[Cassidy Finnegan]], whose deceased son had been a Templar and assistant to Monro. While tending to Shay's injuries, Monro found the [[Voynich manuscript]] on his person and took it for himself.

After he had recovered, Shay managed to oust an Assassin-allied [[Gangs|gang]] from their headquarters in [[New York City|New York]], where he and Monro were formally introduced. Despite his previous affiliations, Monro recognized Shay's potential and was convinced he would excel within the Templar Order, even sharing his hopes for Shay with Haytham. Wearing away at Shay's skepticism, Monro eventually gained Shay's confidence, with the two agreeing to work together to rebuild the city.

Back at the Finnegans' home, Monro asked Shay to rescue Gist, who had been captured by members of the same gang Shay had defeated earlier, and gave him some [[Firecrackers|firecracker darts]] the criminals had made to use as a distraction. Monro, Gist and Shay later reconvened in [[Albany]], where Gist revealed the criminals' base of operations was located at the nearby [[Fort La Croix]].

Fearing that the [[French Army|French]] were planning an assault on New York, Monro convinced Shay to help them capture the fort. After Shay's ship, the ''[[Morrigan]]'', was fitted with the necessary equipment, they mounted an attack on the criminals' headquarters, successfully weakening its defenses. While Shay went inside to finish the job, Monro returned to New York.

Sometime later in New York, Monro explained to Shay that the criminals' boss had hired [[Benjamin Franklin]] to create poisonous gases and the means to use them. Contrary to what [[Le Chasseur]] told Shay, Monro claimed that the outlaws were planning to use the gases against the populace.

Fearing that his former ally [[Hope Jensen]] was involved, Shay agreed to investigate. He managed to acquire a [[grenade launcher]], which the Colonel recommended he use to destroy the criminals' poison factory at an abandoned brewery. Upon completing his mission, he was congratulated by known Templars [[William Johnson]] and Jack Weeks, which revealed Monro's allegiance to the Order.

===Siege of Fort William Henry===
By 1757, Monro had given up on his assignment of uncovering the manuscript's meaning and entrusted the [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]] to Shay, as he himself had been assigned to command [[Fort William Henry]], which was being threatened by French soldiers and [[Abenaki]] braves under the command of General [[Louis-Joseph de Montcalm]]. The fortress came under siege on 2 August, with Monro eventually surrendering seven days later. As part of the terms of surrender, the Colonel and his men were allowed to keep their muskets and one cannon, but no ammunition, and were released the next morning to be allowed passage to {{Wiki|Fort Edward (village), New York|Fort Edward}}.

However, unbeknownst to the British, the Abenaki plotted to ambush the Colonel and his men as they retreated. The Assassin [[Kesegowaase]] decided to use this to his advantage and led the attack in the hopes of assassinating Monro, though his plans were sabotaged when Shay came to the Colonel's rescue. Surviving the ambush, Shay, Monro and the remaining troops reached the ''Morrigan'' and sailed away to safety.

===Death===
Following the Siege at Fort William Henry, Monro met with Shay near {{Wiki|Onaquaga}}. There, Weeks informed them that Kesegowaase was planning to attack Albany. Shay volunteered to help Monro's British and [[Oneida]] allies while he prepared the city's defenses.

On 3 November 1757, Kesegowaase and his men began their attack on Albany. Monro took command of [[Fort Frederick]] and was once again rescued by Shay. On the behest of his protégé, Monro headed for the ''Morrigan'' with the manuscript in his possession. However, along the way, Monro was attacked and fatally wounded by the Assassin [[Liam O'Brien]], who took the manuscript and left Monro to die in a burning house.

After assassinating Kesegowaase, who informed him of Liam's plan, Shay arrived to carry Monro out of the house, but could not save the dying Colonel from his wounds. Before his death, Monro passed his [[Templar ring]] to Shay, entrusting him to recover the manuscript and continue fighting for the Templar Order in his stead.

Monro was a gentle and dutiful man, with an utmost belief in the Templar cause. He saw himself as a benevolent protector of the [[Civilians|citizens]] of the colonies through his service in the British Army, rather than someone who would lord over and govern them. Monro also strived toward improving the colonists' lives through urban renewal, suggesting a similar course of action to Shay shortly after their meeting.

Despite Shay's prior affiliation with the Assassins, Monro saw past it, treating Shay with compassion and expressing faith in his abilities, while also praising his accomplishments and dedication to the Templar cause. Shay in turn saw Monro as an honest and honorable man, and held him in high regard. This mutual respect and camaraderie ultimately led to Shay's acceptance of Templar ideology and his induction into their ranks.
