Juhani Otso Berg (born 1985) is a former member of the Finland Utti Jaeger Regiment, and by 2012, a high-ranking agent of the Operations Division of Abstergo Industries. Later, in December of that year, Berg was inducted into the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order.

Biography
Early life
Before joining the Templars, Juhani was a part of the Utti Jaeger Regiment, which composed Finland's special forces. However, around 2010, he opted to become a mercenary, believing the pay would be better than the Jaegers. He needed the money to afford his cystic fibrosis treatments for his newborn daughter, Ilena.

One night, an Abstergo team headed by Dr. Warren Vidic broke into Berg's home and apprehended him. As Berg watched, Vidic gave Ilena Abstergo-brand medication that he promised would cure her condition, and promised more if Juhani would join him.

Faced with a solution to his daughter's illness, Berg agreed, on one condition. Vidic granted it, and Berg ruthlessly killed the Abstergo agent who had caused Ilena to wake up and cry.

Rise as a Templar
On 12 October 2012, Berg was briefed alongside several other Abstergo operatives who had impressed Vidic enough to begin training in the second stage of their Animi Training Program. Warren promised Juhani and the other operatives greater power, wealth, and information on the Templars if they succeeded, but also warned that there was no backing out from that point.

On 28 October, Berg had interested his superiors within Abstergo with his training in the Animus, enough to be promoted and given greater power, wealth and freedom within the ranks of the Templar Order.

In an agent evaluation report conducted on 8 November, Ctibor Hašek identified Berg as a potential candidate for the Inner Sanctum, noting him as an obedient, loyal agent who was dedicated to the Templar cause. However, Hašek was concerned that Juhani's daughter could be a weakness.

On 16 November, Berg was sent to New York by Laetitia England, in order to investigate a cyber-security breach related to artifacts that Abstergo was tracking, one of which was located in a Manhattan penthouse.

There, he found Daniel Cross, who had escaped the Philadelphia facility the previous day and had been subsequently injured during a confrontation with the Assassin Desmond Miles. Though Berg was attacked by Daniel, who apparently suffered another attack of the Bleeding Effect, he was able to neutralize Cross and returned him to Abstergo. Nine days later, in Helsinki, Finland, Juhani was seen spending time with his daughter.

Raid in Florence
On 28 November 2012, after an attack on the Abstergo campus by the Assassin Harlan T. Cunningham killed four Abstergo hackers and destroyed servers, Berg tailed Cunningham on the regional road SR2 in Italy. From there, Berg called his superiors and convinced them to allow him to follow the Assassin back to his base, instead of killing Harlan.

Successfully, Juhani tracked Cunningham to an Assassin base in Florence led by Adriano Maestranzi. Afterwards, he called for backup and was given command of Abstergo's Sigma strike team, before leading the Templar assault on 30 November.

Maestranzi, not wanting to abandon the base, detonated a bomb that destroyed the Assassins' hideout and files, and killed all of Sigma team except for Berg, who suffered burns that left facial scarring. Despite the outcome, Juhani's superiors were pleased with his performance, crediting him for the deaths of three Assassins – even though Cunningham escaped – and did not hold him responsible for the loss of Sigma team.

Master Templar
On 6 December, Berg was brought to a hidden chamber in Abstergo's Philadelphia facility, where he met with Laetitia. There, she made him a Master Templar and inducted him into the Templar Order's Inner Sanctum, but also had Daniel Cross inject Berg with a tracking device so they could monitor all of his movements.

Four days later, Juhani met with Vidic, England, Cross, and several other Templar operatives within the same room in Philadelphia, where England revealed that Abstergo had located the leader of the Assassins, William Miles, in Cairo, Egypt. Soon after, Berg was dispatched with a team to capture the Assassin.

On 12 December, Berg led the reformed Sigma team in cornering William inside a museum in Cairo, and successfully captured and extracted him from the city, taking him to Abstergo's facility in Rome.

In 2013, Berg led an Abstergo team to India assigned to retrieve Jot Soora, an employee of MysoreTech and a descendant of Raza Soora. The Templars' goal was to extract memories relating to the Koh-i-Noor from Soora.

Abstergo Entertainment
By 2014, Berg took over security in Abstergo Entertainment's Montreal facilities as an "independent contractor" working for Abstergo. He, alongside Violet da Costa supervised a research analyst as they dove into the memories of Shay Cormac located in the Helix, which had a virus implanted in them.

Trivia
*Juhani is a Finnish cognate of the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious". The name Otso is also Finnish, though archaic, meaning "bear". His last name, Berg, means "mountain" in several Germanic languages.
George Monro (1700 – 3 November 1757) was a Colonel in the British Army during the Seven Years' War, and a member of the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order.

He was one of the men who rescued Shay Cormac after he had left the Assassin Brotherhood and been taken to the home of Barry and Cassidy Finnegan. After Shay managed to oust an Assassin-allied gang from their headquarters in New York City, Monro recognized Shay's promise in the Order and was convinced he would excel above all others, so much so that he even told the Grand Master Haytham Kenway such.

In 1757, Monro was assigned to work in Fort William Henry. A French-native alliance threatened the security of the fort. During the Siege of Fort William Henry, Monro was burned to death by the Assassin Liam O'Brien.
The Colonial Rite was one of a number of autonomous factions, in operation during the mid 18th century, that composed the Templar Order. Haytham Kenway founded, and became the first Grand Master of the Colonial Rite in 1754, in order to find a suspected Precursor storehouse, on instruction of the Templar Grand Master Reginald Birch.

The Colonial Rite played a significant role in guiding the course of the American Revolutionary War, with an aim to usurp control of the newly forming nation; in this, however, they were ultimately stopped by the Colonial Assassins.

History
Founding
In the year 1754, Haytham arrived in Boston, and was greeted by Charles Lee, a hopeful wishing to join the Templar Order. With Charles' help, Haytham sought to gather four individuals that Reginald Birch - the Grand Master of the British Rite - had arranged for Haytham to recruit: William Johnson, Thomas Hickey, Benjamin Church, and John Pitcairn.

With the outbreak of the French and Indian War, the British Government had arranged for General Edward Braddock, another member of the Templar Order, to lead an expedition to the French-controlled Fort Duquesne. In order to enlist the aid of the Kanien'kehá:ka, whom it was believed knew the location of the Precursor site, Haytham willingly agreed to side with them in their ambush of Braddock's forces.

The combined assault by Haytham's Rite and the Kanien'kehá:ka, together with a timely assault by the French Army, led to the destruction of the Expedition, and the death of Edward Braddock at Haytham's hands. True to her word, Kaniehtí:io, the Kanien'kehá:ka whom Haytham had agreed their alliance, led the Grand Master to the Precursor site, though the latter was disappointed to find little more than a cave.

Destruction of the Assassins and rise to power
By 1763, the Colonial Rite was in full conflict with the Assassin Brotherhood in the region; that very year, the Templars launched a concentrated assault on the Assassins, all but wiping them out. They forced the only surviving member of the Order - Achilles Davenport - into exile, on the condition that he retire from his life as an Assassin and live quietly in his manor.

After a few more years, the Templars had allied with the British Army to focus on more "practical pursuits". When the American Revolution broke out, the Templars attempted to take advantage of it. Unbeknownst to them however, the Colonial Assassins had returned to the scene with the recruitment of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the illegitimate child of Haytham Kenway and Kaniehtí:io.

Over the course of the Revolution, Ratonhnhaké:ton assassinated William Johnson, John Pitcairn, Nicholas Biddle, Thomas Hickey and during an alliance with Haytham, killed Benjamin Church, who had betrayed the Colonial Rite.

Collapse
In 1781, after cutting off ties with his father, Ratonhnhaké:ton, seeking out Charles Lee, confronted his father in the Templar stronghold at Fort George, New York. After a brutal fight, the Templar Grand Master was killed, and Charles Lee rose to the position in his stead.

At least three months later, in 1782, a funeral was held for Kenway and presided over by Charles Lee, but it was interrupted with the arrival of Ratonhnhaké:ton. Charles had the Assassin detained, before making preparations to travel to Boston. Eventually, the Assassin caught up with Lee once more, and after a rugged pursuit, tracked the man down and killed him in Conestoga Inn, Monmouth. Lee's death marked the collapse of the Colonial Rite and the end of Templar involvement in North America, at least for a time.

In 1781, Ratonhnhaké:ton, seeking out Charles Lee, confronted his father in the Templar stronghold at Fort George, New York.

The iconic weapon of the Assassins, the Hidden Blade was used for both stealth assassinations and regular combat. It was their most versatile weapon, with multiple upgrades and forms of use.

It consisted of a retractable blade, usually in conjunction with a protective bracer. As such, the blade could be discreetly extended or retracted, making it a valuable and stealthy piece of apparatus.

Design
The use of the Hidden Blade initially required the removal of a ring finger, both as a means of more easily extending the blade, and to show the commitment of the one wielding it. As such, many of the early Levantine Assassins could be recognized by their missing fingers. However, the blade's mechanism was modified in the 13th century – as outlined in the Codex of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – so as to no longer require such a sacrifice, and to keep Assassins from being identified so easily. Instead, from the Renaissance to at least the early 20th century, Assassins branded one of their ring fingers (usually the left) during their initiation into the Order as a sign of their devotion to the Creed.

There is no exact explanation for how the Hidden Blade works. Some of the earliest designs indicate a control apparatus wrapped around the hand. The Hidden Blade design would evolve over time; Edward Kenway stated in the 18th century that it is activated by a "flick of the wrist".

However, despite their versatility and strength, Hidden Blades could be broken when struck with enough force. Several Assassins, including Giovanni Auditore da Firenze and his son Ezio, both had one of their blades broken in combat. In both scenarios, the blade broke at the wrist. In 1715, Duncan Walpole's blade was broken in combat with Edward Kenway.

History
Early use
The first recorded use of the Hidden Blade was dated during the 5th century BCE, in the area known as modern day Iran, when Darius used it to assassinate King Xerxes I. By the High Middle Ages, Assassins were regularly outfitted with a Hidden Blade as part of their equipment. The blades saw wide use for assassinations, as they could be easily kept out of sight and allowed for quicker and stealthier eliminations.

Following his rise to the position of Mentor of the Levantine Assassins in 1191, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad used the Apple of Eden to redesign the Hidden Blades so that they could be used without the removal of the ring finger, a construction that became common thereafter.

Advancements in design
By the 15th century, the updated Hidden Blade design was dispersed throughout the Old World. The mechanism no longer required a wrist "flick" to release the blade, allowing the user to extend or retract it without any hand movement. Additionally the weapon could be used with a clenched fist; Giovanni Auditore was one of the few known Assassins to use it in this manner.

Through studying pages from Altaïr's codex, Leonardo da Vinci was able to provide Ezio Auditore with a variety of upgrades, such as the addition of a second Hidden Blade. The right to bear two Hidden Blades was thereafter reserved for those who had earned the rank of Master Assassin. Later innovations to the weapon's design included a hook, most common to the Turkish Assassins of Constantinople, and extra blades, as seen among the Indian Assassins.

By the 17th century, use of dual blades had become more common, as suggested by the large amount of such weapons collected by Julien du Casse.cite Slight structural changes had also emerged; blades used by the Caribbean Assassins were wider than those seen in 16th century Europe, and American Assassins installed a pivot mechanism which changed the blade's orientation and allowed it to be used like a dagger.

Modern times
During the late 19th and early 20th century, the Hidden Blade was still a part of standard Assassin attire, and continued to be commonly used in close combat. However, they began to decline in usage shortly after and were retained largely by high-ranking Assassins, such as Paul Bellamy, for purposes of tradition. They were also used as part of ceremonies, such as when Daniel Cross was gifted with a Hidden Blade by the Mentor in 2000.

Regular use of the Hidden Blade, while uncommon in the 21st century, is still practiced in some regions. In 2013, members of the Onmoraki-Gumi, a yakuza branch taken over by the Osaka Brotherhood, wore Hidden Blades that were concealed by the long sleeves of their suits.

While in the early 19th, the Indian Brotherhood used a Hidden Blade which could divide itself into three blades, as the one of Arbaaz Mir, by the 21st century, the Indians used again a new different design of the iconic weapon of their Order. Thus, the blade was no more placed under the wrist of the user but on its side and a touch screen was also added to the weapon allowing its user to activate the explosive device installed within his Hidden Blade as well as remotely detonate those of his fallen comrades. When in 2013, Jasdip Dhami activated the weapon of his dead sister, the explosion was so powerful that its destroyed an entire floor of a building.

Combat
As its main purpose was stealthy assassination, the Hidden Blade could only be used in combat under certain conditions, and could not block any attack. Altaïr was only able to assassinate a guard who had fallen to the ground or become distracted. He could also use the Hidden Blade in a counter attack; however, the time frame was extremely short in comparison to that of his sword and dagger. Successfully intercepting an attack enabled one of several different – and always lethal – counter attacks.

The Hidden Blade became more useful in combat due to upgrades over time. The mounting of a metal plate on the opposite side of the blade allowed it to be used defensively. In terms of offense, when used together, the dual Hidden Blades were swift but less damaging in comparison to a sword, with more utility in suppressing enemy attacks. In addition, every counter attack with the Hidden Blades resulted in an instant kill, with only the narrow timing window as a disadvantage.

By the 18th century, the Hidden Blade had become an even deadlier tool, thanks to the development of the "Pivot Blade" which allowed the user to rotate the blade 90 degrees and wield it like a dagger. It could be held either in a hammer or icepick grip, allowing Assassins such as Connor to quickly stab, cut, and slash their enemies. It could also be dual-wielded alongside a sword, dagger, or a tomahawk, allowing defensive parries and fierce counter attacks. The Pivot Blade could then be retracted into the Hidden Blade orientation for stealthy assassinations.

Upgrades
Codex
In his studies of the Apple of Eden, Altaïr envisioned several upgrades for the Hidden Blade, which he wrote into his Codex, and some of which he used himself. Throughout Ezio's travels, he would acquire these Codex pages, and Leonardo da Vinci would build the improvements detailed within when Ezio presented him with a page.

The first of these improvements was the addition of a secondary Hidden Blade, which was attached to the user's other arm, allowing an Assassin to kill two guards at once, either on the ground or from the air. The second was a metal plate on top of the primary blade's bracer that allowed one to safely deflect enemy attacks with the blades.

Other Codex upgrades included the Poison Blade and Hidden Gun. The Poison Blade allowed Ezio to stab an enemy with a lethal dose of poison and leave them to die slowly, granting both a low-profile assassination, as well as a distraction to kill or bypass other enemies, while the Hidden Gun allowed an Assassin to make a loud but assured kill from a distance. Additionally, both blades could be supplemented with various vambraces, which acted as protective armor.

Da Vinci
Upon his arrival in Rome, Leonardo envisioned further improvements to the Hidden Blade, such as a poison dart launcher, which allowed the use of the Poison Blade from a distance.

Leonardo also designed and built the Hidden Bolt, a weapon that could fire small crossbow bolts, upon the request of Francesco Vecellio. As Francesco was only an apprentice at the time, Ezio had not allowed him to use the Hidden Gun, and so Francesco had devised a similar, though lighter, alternative.

Hookblade
The Hookblade was a modification of the Hidden Blade that was adopted by the Assassin Guild of Constantinople. Unlike the other Hidden Blade advancements, it was attached to the user's secondary Hidden Blade, instead of the primary.

Upon his arrival in the city, Ezio also made use of it in combat and travel. Primarily, it could be used during navigation in conjunction with ziplines, as well as allowing one to perform the "hook-and-run" and "hook-and-throw" maneuvers over their enemies, and generally extend one's reach when climbing and leaping.

The Hookblade also aided in battle by allowing a wider variety of attacks or counters, as well as permitting one to "counter-steal" or trip an enemy.

Phantom Blade
The Phantom Blade was a variation of the traditional Hidden Blade utilized by the French Assassins during the French Revolution.

The Phantom Blade could be loaded with two types of projectiles: lethal and berserk poison darts, allowing Assassins like Arno Dorian a silent kill or distraction.

Replicas
In their study of the Assassins' methods and weaponry, several members of the Templar Order created their own variations of the Hidden Blade, though the mechanism and appearance often differed.

The first known instance of this was in the early 16th century, when Fiora Cavazza and Baltasar de Silva tailed the Assassins of Rome, in order to take note of their techniques. They eventually trained Il Lupo in the Assassins' ways, and equipped him with a switchblade, a Hidden Blade variation that split into two parts, folding forward only when in use. Lia de Russo also wore her own Hidden Blade, and though its mechanisms seemed to match that of the Assassins, it was worn on top of her forearm, rather than underneath.

While disguised as a slave in Chichen Itza, Aveline de Grandpré was forced to make replica Hidden Blades by scrounging up knives, belts and wood.

In modern times, during the second stage of simulations hosted by the Animi Training Program of Abstergo Industries, every recruit was given access to a variation of the Hidden Blade. The virtual weapon was also worn under the left forearm, but its blade folded along two circular joints when not being used.

As part of the console stage of Abstergo Entertainment's Animus technology, the Animi Avatars contained within could use another variation of the Hidden Blade, this time possessing a two-part telescopic function to the mechanism.

Trivia
;Design
*Patrice Désilets, one of the creative directors for the Assassin's Creed series, stated that the addition of a second blade in Assassin's Creed II also had a lucid reason: "it's Assassin's Creed II, so there [were] two blades."
*Assassin's Creed: Renaissance and early concept art for Assassin's Creed II showed Ezio possessing three Hidden Blades; one on his right, and two on his left.
*The original design of Ezio's second Hidden Blade in Assassin's Creed II was displayed as a brown glove, however, in-game, it was replaced with a second bracer. This was reverted in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood however, where his second Hidden Blade included a glove, until a bracer had been purchased.
*Concept art for the "Shock Blade", a modern version of the Hidden Blade, was shown in the Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia.
*On his blog, Assassin's Creed concept artist Gilles Beloeil stated that the 21st century model of the hidden blade is much smaller, being 3.25 inches, yet still as effective as its older equivalents. It was shortened due to modern security systems, such as cameras.
*It is unknown why the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood box art, E3 Trailer and other official media including the opening cinematics of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed III depict Ezio with a secondary Hidden Blade bracer that is identical to his primary one, as in-game, no such second bracer exists.
**The same happened with Ratonhnhaké:ton on the "Ignite the Revolution" poster and in the box art for Assassin's Creed III.
*In early concept art for Assassin's Creed III, rope darts were integrated onto the Hidden Blade's bracer, envisioned as the "Chain Blade". This concept was later modified to be closer to reality, resulting in the "Chain Blade" being scrapped for a more reasonable alternative.
*The second Hidden Blade was marginally longer than the primary one in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*One concept art by Martin Deschambault for Assassin's Creed II showed two unimplemented Hidden Blade upgrades; a retracting arrow-shaped blade, and a retracting trident-ended blade for parrying weapons and disarming enemies.
**Martin Deschambault's art also shows two designs of the blade itself; feather-look, and normal blade with designed holes.

;Mechanism
*In the E3 teaser trailer of Assassin's Creed, as well as in certain concept art, Altaïr could be seen pushing a button to operate his Hidden Blade. In-game however, no such button or other trigger mechanism existed.
*In Assassin's Creed: Renaissance and the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel, unleashing the Hidden Blade required the use of a button, via a certain muscle on the forearm being flexed.
**The same mechanism also triggered the Hidden Gun if the user's thumb was pushed to the left.
*In an Assassin's Creed developer diary video, Jade Raymond spoke about the lack of Altaïr's ring finger and the Assassins' initiation ceremony.
*The Hidden Blade is a crafted item in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy. The materials for its construction are 2 Coils, 1 Iron, 1 Hide and 1 Box of Components; the latter in turn being crafted using 3 Gears, 3 Screws, 1 Chain and 2 Sprockets.
*In Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade, the trigger mechanism was depicted as a ring worn around a finger. Movement of that finger would cause the blade to extend or retract.
*The closest novel adaptation of the Hidden Blade to the in-game version appears in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, wherein Edward Kenway stated he had activated the blade by the tensing of a muscle that came from the upper arm as well as the forearm, and a simultaneous flick of the wrist. This is much unlike the ring-triggered or button mechanisms as mentioned in previous novels, thus more like the in-game Hidden Blade.

;Others
*In Assassin's Creed, despite being equipped with a Hidden Blade, some Assassins, such as Malik Al-Sayf, retained all fingers. This error was later corrected in Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
**Along with this, however, came another error. The Assassins retained amputated ring fingers even after Altaïr changed the design of the blade so that amputation was no longer necessary.
*In Assassin's Creed, the Hidden Blade was used in every major assassination. Even if an Assassin began by attacking their target with a sword, they would always finish them off with the Hidden Blade. Later however, it was changed so that they could use any weapon they wished.
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, if the PlayStation Portable was linked to Assassins Creed II, Altaïr's Hidden Blade could be upgraded to be able to block light and heavy attacks.
*In Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles, Altaïr could only use the Hidden Blade to assassinate an enemy from behind, if it was related to the story.
*There was a glitch in the Assassin's Creed II mission "Practice What You Preach", in that if Ezio went to the blacksmith and purchased the Leather Vambrace, instead of practicing the new assassination techniques, he could acquire the second Hidden Blade before Leonardo had even made it for him.
*In Assassin's Creed: Embers, the Chinese Assassin Shao Jun used a modified Hidden Blade, located along the sole of her shoe. This operated essentially the same as a shoe knife, which was used by the KGB during the Cold War.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brahman, the Indian Assassin Arbaaz Mir was equipped with a modified Hidden Blade, which could extend into three blades.
*The Hidden Blade could be used in Valve's Team Fortress 2 by the Spy class, under the name Sharp Dresser. It was available for those who pre-ordered Assassin's Creed: Revelations on Steam before December 2, 2011.
*The NBC series Grimm has featured a vambrace which has been specially modified to include a retractable blade.

Using Daniel's memories obtained from him via interrogation, Stearns sent teams of Templars dressed in military fatigues to the various Assassin hideouts Daniel had visited. Shalim (unknown – 1192) was the twin brother of Shahar, the son of Moloch, and a member of the Templar Order.

Biography
During Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's search for the Templar Archive on Cyprus, he spied on Shalim to find the location of Maria Thorpe. However, being no use to the Master Assassin, Shalim went to a brothel with some of his guards, harassing the citizens and merchants of Kyrenia beforehand to gather some money for their visit. There, Shalim took one of the courtesans, and eventually returned to Saint Hilarion Castle, telling his guards to find more women for him when they were done.

Investigation
Later, one of the scholars Altaïr had conversed with, told him that the people suffered from Shalim's oppresion. When Altaïr asked about Shalim's attitude, the scholar replied that the opposition would mean death, and when he inquired about the Templar Archive, the answer was cut by a speech being given by Shalim's brother, Shahar.

Once Shahar had taken a place on an orator's stand and announced Armand Bouchart's intentions to the people of Kyrenia, Altaïr mistook him for Shalim, since he was unaware that the two were twins.

After his speech, Shahar returned to Saint Hilarion Castle. Altaïr infiltrated the fortress along with a group of courtesans, with Maria disguised among them, who were transported there by Shalim's guards.

Death
As Maria questioned Shahar about the Templars' intentions towards the use of Apple of Eden, Altaïr interrupted the meeting, and learned that Shalim and Shahar were twins, as he faced both of them in combat. Maria had fled, leaving Altaïr to fight alone against the two skilled swordsmen. Eventually, Shalim and Shahar were both defeated, and the Assassin escaped the castle.

Personality and characteristics
Shalim was known for his rude behavior, violent temper, lack of respect and wayward lifestyle, directly opposite of his brother Shahar, who was usually calm and mild-mannered, as well as religious. Despite his personality, he matched his twin's identical appearance and skills in swordplay.

Trivia
*Ironically, Shalim is an Arabic name derived from the word salima, سلم, meaning "to be safe".
*In the ancient Canaanite religion, Shalim and Shahar are twin deities, the gods of dusk and dawn respectively.
Duncan Walpole (1679 – 1715) was a Master Assassin of the British Brotherhood of Assassins during the early 18th century. Skilled but arrogant, Duncan later chose to betray his Order and join the Templars of the West Indies.

Biography
Early life
The second cousin of Robert Walpole, Britain's "first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom", Duncan's early life was one of relative comfort and ease. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a mid-shipman, hoping to become a naval officer. However, Duncan's impulsive nature and immoderate temper prevented him from rising quickly through the ranks, causing him to become frustrated with his progress.

After three years, Duncan gave up on the navy and instead sought his fortune with the East India Company. There, he befriended a sailor, who introduced Duncan to the Assassin Order and its teachings. Although wary at first, Duncan soon grew to serve the Order with a fervor and drive he had not known in the navy.

Betraying the Assassins
Duncan's reputation increased along with his skills, though his impulsiveness and temper - coupled with a growing arrogance - continued to be liabilities and often led him to clash with the senior members of the British Brotherhood. Disappointed to find neither glory nor fortune with the Assassins, Duncan's loyalty to the Order faltered, which was taken advantage of by the British Templars, who eventually succeeded in turning Duncan to their cause.

In 1714, Duncan was asked by his Mentor to sail to the West Indies and meet Ah Tabai, the leader of the local Brotherhood. Seeing an opportunity to sabotage the Assassins' operation and officially join the Templars, Duncan eagerly accepted the position and departed within the month.

Arriving in early 1715, Duncan requested to train under Ah Tabai, utilizing the next few months to integrate himself into the local Brotherhood and gather valuable information about the locations of various Assassin bureaus in the area. In secret, Duncan also began corresponding with Laureano de Torres y Ayala, the Spanish Governor of Cuba and the Grand Master of the Templar Order in the West Indies. The pair arranged to meet in Havana, where Duncan would be officially inducted.

Around June, Ah Tabai learnt that the Templars had imprisoned a Sage in the southern Spanish colonies and entrusted Duncan with the task of intercepting the Templar ship that was carrying the captive. Seizing his chance to abandon the Assassins, Duncan agreed to this task and departed on a frigate called HMS Intrigue, setting sail for Havana to join Torres.

Death
However, while en route, HMS Intrigue attacked a pirate brig, the Jacobite, which was captained by Abel Bramah. The pirates managed to de-mast the frigate, but soon found that their own weapon magazine had been hit. Shipwrecked in Cape Bonavista, Cuba, Duncan attempted to enlist the aid of the only other survivor, the pirate Edward Kenway, in reaching Havana. Edward attempted to haggle the price of passage, but Duncan threatened him with a flintlock pistol in response, only to find that it was unable to fire due to wet gunpowder; Duncan subsequently fled into the jungle, and Edward gave chase. During this chase, the gunpowder in Duncan's flintlock dried, allowing the Assassin turncoat to shoot Edward once with his flintlock pistol, angering the pirate who would eventually duel and kill him easily.

On Duncan's corpse, Edward found a letter from Torres, referencing the cargo Duncan was bringing to him: a blood vial and maps pertaining to the locations of Assassin bureaus across the Caribbean. Edward chose to assume Duncan's identity and collect the reward for himself, unknowingly plunging headlong into the secret war between the Templars and the Assassins.
