The '''Papal Guard''' were elite [[Guards|soldiers]] commanded by the [[Papacy]] to serve and protect the pontiff during his tenure.

By 1503, the Papal guards protected [[Rodrigo Borgia|Pope Alexander VI]], and were led by the Pope's son and Captain General, [[Cesare Borgia]]. Following the fall of the [[House of Borgia|Borgia]], they were once again commanded by their former captain [[Fabio Orsini]]. They were also the precursors to the {{Wiki|Swiss Guard}}.

==Combat==
The Papal guards were the most versatile and difficult guards in [[Rome]], as they possessed the best of abilities held by all other archetypes.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XoffSkVgsc ''Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood'' - Dev Diary 3] </ref> They were skilled in both attack and defense, easily deflecting and countering many attacks, while also delivering harsh strikes of their own.<ref name="ACB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

Papal guards could [[Dual-wielding|dual-wield]] a [[Firearms|wheel-lock firearm]] and a [[Swords and maces|sword]], making them deadly opponents at both short and long-range. Other than swords, they could also be equipped with a variety of [[Short blades|short]], [[Long weapons|long]], or [[heavy weapons]], though guards utilizing these were rarer to witness.<ref name="ACB"/>

Much like [[Agile guards|Agiles]], Papal guards were extremely fast, and were able to dodge most attacks. Accompanying this, they were also difficult to escape from, and could even catch up to [[Assassins]] in a chase.<ref name="ACB"/>

Papal guards often traveled in groups, and would employ teamwork strategies in battle. While one could continuously fire at their target from a distance, the others would attack from close range. As well as this, they could throw sand and grab enemies from behind, skills common to [[Seekers]].<ref name="ACB"/>

==Trivia==
*Historically, the Papal Guard was comprised mostly of Swiss soldiers from its conception in 1471, when Pope [[Sixtus IV]] made a pact with the Swiss to supply him with [[mercenaries]]. Although these mercenaries primarily protected the Pope, they also occupied leadership roles on the front lines of the Italian Wars.
*In the memory "[[Liquid Gold]]", the guard captain can be heard speaking [[Germany|German]], proving their Swiss nationality.

;Design
*Early Papal guard designs were seen in the ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' cinematic trailer, and in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Ascendance]]''. While the designs for the guards themselves were changed before the game's release, [[Fabio Orsini]] wore the same armor as seen in the original concept, albeit without a helmet and bearing a different emblem.
**Additionally, all the Papal guards seen were shown to have halberds. However, in-game, the only time they could be seen carrying halberds was during the arrest of Cesare Borgia.
**In ''Assassin’s Creed: Ascendance'', the Papal Guard under Cesare were shown to wear the coat of arms of Pope [[Julius II]], comprised of the Papal Keys and a shield with a golden oak tree on a blue field.

;Appearances
*During [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Juan Borgia]]'s party, a Papal guard was tasked to deliver the debt money of [[Egidio Troche]]. He spoke with a [[United Kingdom|British]] accent and used some German words.
*During the [[Skirmish in the Campagna District|infiltration of the French headquarters]] in Rome, Ezio faced some Papal guards. Although the Borgia had already left the battle by this time, the guards were an indication of the close alliance between Cesare and [[Octavian de Valois]].
*By Cesare Borgia's arrest in December 1503, the Borgia had lost all their power in Rome. However, when Cesare was arrested by Fabio Orsini and the Papal troops, they still carried the emblem of the Borgia, despite being commanded by the new Pope Julius II.
*Similarly, when Ezio infiltrated [[Delizia di Belriguardo|Belriguardo Castle]] in 1506, Papal guards that bore the Borgia emblem chased after him, even though Ezio was in [[Ferrara]] and the Borgia were no longer in power. *Papal guards were not affected by Ezio's taunts.
*Cesare Borgia himself fought much like a Papal guard, and was able to dual-wield a pistol and sword as they did.
*The Papal guards were considerably stronger than Ezio and had a larger build, with all of them being at least a head taller than him.
*[[Bombs#Smoke bombs|Smoke bombs]] had no effect on a Papal guard while engaged in combat. However, the bombs functioned as normal if the guard was taken by surprise.
*A Papal guard could only be disarmed if he carried a pistol.

Very little is known of El Tiburón before he entered into Torres' service. As the governor's bodyguard, he gained a frightening reputation that soon spread throughout the [[Cuba]]n capital of [[Havana]]. El Tiburón was also known to enjoy overseeing the hangings of criminals, which only added to his menacing character.<ref name="Encyclopedia">''[[Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia]]''</ref>

In July 1715, El Tiburón attended an execution, at which the [[Piracy|pirate]] [[Edward Kenway]] was also present. Although they did not interact with each other then, they would later meet at Torres' mansion, where Kenway pretended to be the [[Assassins|Assassin]]-turned-Templar [[Duncan Walpole]].<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref> During the induction, El Tiburón kept an eye on Kenway, suspicious of the man's true motives.<ref name="Encyclopedia"/>

The next day, El Tiburón accompanied the Templars to their meeting with [[Bartholomew Roberts]], a [[Sages|Sage]], and subsequently defended them from an organized group of Assassins who attempted to free Roberts. Thanks to his armor, which protected El Tiburón from the Assassins' [[poison darts]], he was able to overcame the attackers, demonstrating his strength when he hurled his axe across a full meter into an Assassin.<ref name="AC4" />

Although the Sage was able to break free, he was soon recaptured by Kenway and imprisoned at the mansion for further interrogation. That night, Roberts broke free from his cell, with the Templars only finding Kenway in his place. Realizing he was an imposter, El Tiburón swiftly incapacitated Kenway and prepared to beat him up, but was stopped by Torres. After a short interrogation, during which it became clear that the Sage had escaped by himself, Kenway was taken hold of by El Tiburón and [[Julien du Casse]], who sent him with the [[Spanish Treasure Fleet]] as a prisoner.<ref name="AC4"/>

In 1719, he accompanied Torres to [[Kingston]] to meet with fellow Templar [[Woodes Rogers]] and his newest recruit, [[Benjamin Hornigold]]. Years later, after the assassination attempt on Rogers and the death of Roberts, El Tiburón was tasked with guarding a body double of Torres at the [[Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta]], in an attempt to delay Kenway from pursuing the governor to the [[Observatory]]. On the way to the fort, El Tiburón and his escort came across two pirates threatening a number of soldiers, who watched in awe as El Tiburon brutally dispatched both pirates with his axe.<ref name="AC4"/>

When Edward assassinated the imposter at the fort, El Tiburón engaged him in combat,<ref name="AC4"/> swiftly gaining the upper hand thanks to his training as a soldier.<ref name="Encyclopedia"/> A number of Spanish soldiers joined the bodyguard in battle, but proved more of an obstruction than anything; whenever El Tiburón attempted to shoot Kenway, the pirate used a guard as a human shield. He was eventually killed by Kenway, who used [[Firearms|pistols]] to penetrate his armor. As El Tiburón lay dying, Kenway paid the man his final rites.<ref name="AC4"/>

==Trivia==
*It is possible, though difficult, for Edward to kill El Tiburón through other means than just pistols.
*Despite his death occurring in 1722, El Tiburón's database entry is never updated to include the date.
*Due to El Tiburón's unwavering loyalty towards Torres, the [[Abstergo Entertainment]] employee that wrote El Tiburón's database entry speculated there might have been a familial connection between the two.
*If Edward were to attempt to attack El Tiburón during the events of "[[...And My Sugar?]]" memory, he would kill Edward with a single blow.
*It is possible to pickpocket El Tiburón in the "[[Mister Walpole, I Presume?]]" memory. Doing so grants only one Spanish reale, however.
*Originally, Edward and El Tiburón were planned to have a confrontation at the end of Sequence 2, which would end with Edward losing the battle.
